Kaminski’s Wistula expedition moors in Warsaw
13.03.2010 12:21

Polar explorer Marek Kaminski moored in Warsaw at 10 am this morning as part of his long canoeing journey through the length of Poland.

“I eat fish and drink filtered water from the Wistula river,” Kaminski said when asked why he was still full of energy after nearly a week of paddling along one of Poland’s main river ways.

Kaminski, accompanied by disabled canoeists, expedition, manages to cover around 90 kilometers a day, through what have been unusually cold waters, even for Poland, at this time of year.

The trip ends in Gdansk later next week. Keep up to date with the Expedition Wisla via their youtibe page here.

Internet changing Poles’ sex lives
09.03.2010 13:32

One in three intimate relationships in Poland begin on the web, finds a new report.

The web is not just replacing more traditional ways of meeting a loved one, however. The report into the sexual and emotional lives of internet users, written by a renowned Polish sexologist Prof. Zbigniew Izdebski and commissioned by Polpharma, also finds that although most internet users (89 percent) claim that they prefer real sex, many (79.6 percent) admit that virtual sex - in the form of pornography, sex chat rooms and the like - also gives them satisfaction.

The web is also replacing the playground as a way of finding out about the pleasures of the flesh. A lot of young internet users acquire knowledge about sex from the web (84.2 percent of males and 75.2 percent of females).

Poles who have sex-related problems - and almost two thirds admit to having them - usually discuss these with their friends, and rarely with a sexologists, gynecologist or urologist.

Poles are not particularly faithful partners. Two out of five internet users admit having affairs and 10 percent of people who described themselves as heterosexuals claim they also have had homosexual flings.

Regardless of the kind of relationship and sexual preference, Polish internet users usually have sex two to three times a week, lasting, on average, 18 minutes.

The majority of the respondents were happy with their sexual life, they claimed.

The survey was conducted among 10,016 Polish internet users.

But sex is only good, face to face, with a person who you care for, the real thing.

Bones protrude from grave
02.04.2010 12:06

The gory sight of human bones protruding from graves have been discovered at a cemetery in Bytom, southern Poland.

Marcin Nowak went to the local cemetery in Bytom to clean and decorate his aunt’s grave before Easter. Suddenly, he noticed human bones sticking out from a freshly dug grave. There were sections of spine, ribs and even the wood from a coffin scattered among the graves.

“I was shocked. It’s a total lack of respect for human remains,” says Nowak.

Nowak told grave diggers but they tried to belittle the issue. “We can’t help it. The ground is wet; bones do not decay and it is difficult to distinguish fragments of bones from stones and other bits and pieces in the ground. Besides, rain washes away skeletons from graves. We keep finding skulls and bones. That’s why dogs are not allowed on the premises,” grave diggers told Gazeta Wyborcza.

The Sanitary Inspectorate in Bytom is surprised by the gruesome news about human remains at the local cemetery. “No one told us about it. Loose bones should be buried within coffins,” says Jolanta Wasowska from the inspectorate.

“I’m also shocked and I will make sure that grave diggers bury the remains properly,” says Priest Dariusz Pietras, who takes care of the cemetery.

Mr. Nowak is still haunted by what he discovered and has revised plans for his own funeral arrangements. “I try not to think about the fact that these could be my relatives’ bones and I doubt I will choose a traditional burial for myself,” says Nowak, thoughtfully. (

Former minister caught plagiarising from wiki
29.03.2010 15:25

It’s not just university students who are plagiarizing Wikipedia in Poland: Professor Aldona Kamela-Sowinska, a former treasury minister, has been caught copying most of the introduction to her latest book from the web.

The copying was discovered by Marek Wronski, a scientist who investigates cases of plagiarism at Polish universities. Wronski revealed that the introduction to the book Economy and information society is almost entirely copied from popular web sites, such as Wikipedia or Sciaga.pl, where students can find ready-to-use essays and articles.

It turns out that the renowned economist wrote only four sentences by herself.

Professor Kamela-Sowinska, caught red-handed, admitted copying the introduction from internet. “There is no need to cry over the spilt milk, I’m not going to bury head in the sand,” said a defiant Kamela-Sowinska and added that other academics often copy half of their dissertations, while she copied just a few vital facts.

The former minister also called for a re-definition of plagiarism in the times of internet. But her critics are unconvinced.

“The professor tries to justify herself in a childish way, as if she didn’t know what copyright is,” says Marek Wronski, who thinks that following the scandal Kamela-Sowinska should quit her post as rector at the Higher School of Commerce and Accounting in the western city of Poznan.

Prof. Kamela-Sowinska, however, has a history of this type of thing. Three years ago she copied a text about honesty into her book on ethics in business. The author of the plagiarized article took the economist to court, demanding 20,000 zloty (5,130 euro) in damages. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education has also been investigating the case. And yes I am right that in this culture many people cheat and most see nothing wrong with it. Parents, teachers, students and even Head Masters know about this, why are you trying to cover up something that's so obviously apparent? I just told Poles here that I try to see positive sides and even try to help others, but when the truth is suppressed by those who don't/can't admit it, that's when I get serious. How would you even be able to arrive at that conclusion? Personal experience? It seems your view is based on perception, it's not very scientific. One man dead in Warsaw shootout
23.05.2010 12:00

One man has been killed and a policeman injured as a shootout between police and street traders in Warsaw took place on Sunday morning.
The event happened after police were undertaking routine checks of traders in Warsaw’s Praga district.
Initial reports say that the 36-year old Nigerian was aggressive and attacked the officers on duty, trying to take one of their guns. It was then that the lethal shots were fired.
Police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski told journalists that “they were probably dealing illegal substances.” Investigators and a prosecutor are at the scene, with statements being gathered from witnesses. (jb)

It's allways the poor blacks. We have the smae problem here in the USA. They don't want to be treated the same, they want special treatment, and our president gives they this.
I am not againts all blacks, I know many fine blacks, and many are my friends. With them, it is most of the time, color, and many of the fine blacks will tell you the same thing.

It is natural. First they were slaves for nearly 300 years, next they lived in isolation and apartheid for the next 100 years. Wouldn`t you think that some special treatment is proper if you were in their shoes?

None of these people have any ties to the past, it is long gone, and must live in today's world. I believe no special treatment for anyone, treat all alike. They could have stayed at home and fight for there correct treatment, don't bring your hard feelings to us, keep them home.

‘Swastika’ in Hindu temple near Warsaw?
26.05.2010 13:19

Polish authorities are considering banning a centuries old religious symbol, or ‘swastika’, in a Hindu temple in Wolka Kosowska, a small village near Warsaw.

Authorities are worried that the ancient Hindu religious swastika – derived from the Sanskrit word svástika –violates Poland’s ban on symbols associated with Nazi or communist dictatorships. For Hindus, the cross symbolises prosperity and happiness.

The Indian Association of Poland (IAP), which says it represents around 2,000 Indian immigrants to Poland, is converting a factory building in Wolka Kosowska into a Hindu temple. The Nazis used the symbol, however – in German, a Hakenkreuz – to symbolise the supposed struggle of the Aryan race, after appearing in far-right nationalist circles in Germany from the turn of the 20th century.

“The temple is almost ready inside, now we’re building a marble façade,” Suresh Motwani, who supervises the construction of the temple told the Gazeta Wyborcza daily. Inside the Hindu Bhavan temple there will be nine figures of Indian gods and goddesses, imported from the Jaipur region in India. There will also be a swastika.

“The aim of the temple is to provide a common identity to the Indian community in Poland, and acquaint Indian youth with Indian traditions, culture and religion,” says Seema Motwani from IAP. The Indian community also wants to invite Poles, who are increasingly interested in Indian culture, to take part in Indian holidays and rites.

Hindu Bhavan will be the third Hindu temple in Poland. Two other temples are also located near Warsaw.

Tourists were drinking beer in public, off premises, which is forbidden. The article suggested that they were an easier target/prey for the municipal police to fine than a completely drunk Pole sleeping on the bench.

Corner shop in decline in Poland
26.07.2010 08:51

Around 4,000 small shops are set to shut their doors for the last time in 2010, as more and more discount stores extend their chains into ever small towns nationwide.

According to a report by the European Commission, tens of thousands of small shops have closed down in the whole EU in the past five years.

The loss of these local grocery stores means that some smaller towns and villages are often left without any sort of shop at all, a burden for the elderly and for those without a car.

The European Commission believes that internet shopping is a way to combat the loss of local stores, although the older generation, which is most affected by the closures, may have problems doing their shopping on-line.

What a silly idea.

Police: ‘cash or credit card, sir?’
27.0.2010 08:43

Police cars are set to be fitted with credit card terminals for the quick and efficient paying of fines by speeding drivers.

Currently fines have to be paid at either a bank or post office due to regulations stipulating that police officers are not allowed to accept cash from on-the-spot fines.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs is behind the idea to equip the squad cars with card terminals, and is proposing a change in regulations so that drivers who break the highway code have the option of paying with plastic in situ.

Paying by card will still remain an option, however, with the caught motorist incurring additional costs from the transaction (up to 3 percent) as well as the telephone connection from the terminal to the bank.

The Internal Ministry has finished drafting the relevant legislation, which means that Police cars may be fitted with the terminals from 2011.

In the future, credit card terminals may also be fitted at various State offices, such as municipal councils or tax offices. The move is a cost-cutting measure, as the Ministry of Finance reports that the transportation and security of collected monies absorbs up to 1 percent of GDP.

A two-metre anaconda has been caught and taken to a zoo after it slithered its way out of a toilet in an apartment in Wroclaw, south-west Poland.

Much to the alarm of a 73-year-old woman living in a downtown Wroclaw apartment, the anaconda emerged out of the toilet bowl, after which the woman informed emergency services immediately.

Police and veterinary experts arrived at the scene to catch the two-metre long anaconda, taking it to a local zoological garden shortly afterwards. Police are now trying to determine how the snake got into the Wroclaw sewage system.

The anaconda, which is native to South America, is used to marshy waters and can spend long periods of time submerged in water.

“Two organizers of the festival and three secondary school students were injured during an experiment with sulfur,” says Marlena Mokrzanowska from a hospital in Legnica.
One scientist was hospitalized after he lost a finger and his skin got burnt,” says Slawomir Masojc from Legnica police.

Plane forced to return to Poland after onboard fisticuffs
29.09.2010 11:23

LOT airlines is demanding that a Polish-American who started a fight yesterday afternoon on board a flight to Chicago, forcing the captain to return to Poland, receives a heavy fine.

“We had to drop 22 tonnes of fuel [in order to land at Warsaw airport], which cost us about 100,000 dollars,” said Marta Marczak from Polish Airlines LOT.

The American businessman of Polish origin, who travelled business class, started arguing with the crew and hit one of the pilots over a dispute over whether his son could sit with him.

The captain decided that the aggressive man could be a danger to both crew and co-passengers and turned the plane back to Poland. After landing the man was detained by border guards.

We had to do shopping today. Lines were a bit longer but still bearable, probably the same as at the weekend.
What struck me was a complete lack of posters or banners announcing the protest. That was wrong - I heard some Americans in a neighbouring line who knew nothing and complained about the Polish service.

Supermarket cashiers on work to rule protest
07.10.2010 08:01
Expect long queues at some supermarket checkouts today in Poland as cashiers, shelf filers and other workers go on a work to rule in many large retail stores across Poland, Thursday.Trade unions are demanding higher wages and a free day on Sunday.

The Solidarity trade union’s Alfred Bujara says workers are being exploited and want to inform the public about their plight.

He adds that many “supermarket employees are having fixed, long term contracts replaced by shorter, less secure agreements.”

Supermarket workers at Carrefour, Bomi, Praktiker, Makro or Real will not be striking but working to rule, keeping meticulously to job instructions - which will have the practical effect of slowing down the amount of customers being processed at checkout.

F-16 noise victims awarded damages
14.10.2010 15:32

Five families who live in the vicinity of a military airbase in Krzesiny, western Poland, are to receive compensation after claiming damages caused by the noise emitted from F-16 fighter jets.

Each family will be granted 100,000 zloty (25,000 euro) damages which are supposed to equal the expense of constructing sound-proof walls and the decline in the value of their properties.

More trials are underway, including one which may bring up to one million zloty (250,000 euro) compensation to plaintiffs whose house is located next to the runway. A building expert recommended the demolition of the house as protecting the building against noise would be too expensive.

For a long time the Polish Army, owner of the airbase, has tried to avoid paying out compensation. The army’s lawyers claimed that the level of noise in a city centre is also very high but it does not affect the prices of properties. The lawyers also argued that residents of the area situated next to the airbase are exaggerating and the F-16s are not as noisy as they say.

“It takes a long time until a final ruling is issued on such cases because they usually go through courts of all instances, including the Supreme Court,” says Katarzyna Szafranska, a lawyer who represented the families who recently won their compensation case.

Prosecutors to ‘strike’ over cuts
25.10.2010 09:34
Poland’s prosecutors have announced that they will refuse to question anyone for three days in November in protest against what say will be a dangerous level of under funding next year brought on by government cuts.

Prosecutors will refuse to question suspects and witnesses between 16 to 19 November after cuts have left the prosecution service short of 20 million zloty (5 million euros) this year, with more expenditure cuts planned for 2011.

“During those days we will not be hearing suspects or witnesses,” Jacek Skała, vice president of the prosecutor’s trade union, told TVN 24 news station.

The cuts to prosecution service will amount to 80 million zloty in 2011 with a 20 million zloty hole in the budget for this year already threatening efficiency of the service, say legal workers.

More Poles rolling their own
10.11.2010 10:42

More and more Poles are reaching for rolling tobacco instead of the traditional packet of cigarettes, a new report shows.

Poles roll up as many as 4.7 million cigarettes annually, according to data from the Health Ministry.

Even though hand rolling tobacco is considered as a greater hazard to health than normal cigarettes, Poles are finding hand rolling tobacco more economical than regular ‘straights’, as excise on tobacco remains lower than for regular cigarettes.

Data released from Nielsen consumer researchers in Poland shows that in 2009, sales in cigarettes dropped by 1.3 percentage points, with hand-rolling tobacco sales increasing by the same margin. With trends set to continue in 2010, producers estimate that sales of rolling tobacco may even rise by more than 30 percent.

The tobacco industry estimates that the move to hand rolling tobacco from traditional cigarettes costs the state budget between 300-400 million zloty (75-100 million euro) yearly.

Giant Frosty the Snowman built in Poland15 December 2010 [19:25] - Today.Az

It has been snowing for quite some time in Poland and with all that “raw material” at hand ,three inhabitants of Trzebnica city, Poland started building a snowman. The problem is they didn’t know when to stop.

The 31ft giant, named Milocinek, was finished after 6 days of work and is now the pride and joy of the city, which is pretty normal, if you believe the rumors that this is not just the largest snowman in Poland, but also the largest in the world. I hate to break it to them, but this doesn’t even come close to beating the record for the world’s largest snowman. Milocinek is so large they had to use a barrel for a hat and a traffic cone for his nose, instead of the usual carrot.

Although the three men who built Milocinek started of out of pure boredom, they became more and more enthusiastic as their work progressed., and didn’t stop until they realized their snowman was taller than pretty much all the surrounding houses. In fact, Milocinek is so large they had to use a barrel for a hat and a traffic cone for his nose, instead of the usual carrot.

Palaeolithic burial ground found near Krakow
16.12.2010 12:57

The oldest burial in Poland has been discovered by archaeologists in a cave near Kraków.

The archaeologists found the remains of a child from the Palaeolithic era, buried with a large collection of ornaments.

The team led by Jarosław Wilczyński and Piotr Wojtal from the Polish Academy of Sciences with Anita Szczepanek from Jagiellonian University found, among others, six human milk teeth and a necklace made of 112 animal teeth.

The child, which had been about eighteen months old, was laid to rest in the cave some 27.500 years ago, in the age of Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers.

Recently, archaeological findings in another cave brought up the oldest human bone fragments in Poland, dated to the Middle Palaeolithic era, however researchers say that these did not have the features of an intentional burial.

Archaeologists were also surprised to find that some of the animal teeth of the necklace found in the grave were from elk, which is thought to have disappeared from that area at the time.

Judging by this, they believe that the child’s people had travelled to the area of Kraków from the south. Researchers are still trying to establish the causes of death of the Stone Age toddler and working to confirm the dating of the burial. Stone Age people generally used caves as shelter and not burial sites.
