Wrocław was seriosly destroyed during the war. Germans put up a fanatic resistance and the siege by the Red Army lasted a few weeks and resulted in destruction and death of thousands of people.
Unfortunately, Polish authorities which took over didn`t reconstruct many destroyed parts. Instead, they filled them with banal socialist apartment blocks. So, rebuilding, yes, but full reconstruction - no. Even in 1970s they prefered to demolish houses than renovate them.
These views in the Market Square and the area of the Old Town are really depressing. The eastern part of the Old Town is wholly socialist.
Some buildings still bear traces of bullets
And you can see that some houses lost their neighbours which weren`t rebuilt.
