:(Yesterday someone called at an elderly single ladies home posing as a workman the ladies house is opposite ours he said he was due to do some work on our house in the next few days if she could pay him £100 deposit up front he would give her a big discount when she replied she did not have that much in the house, so he asked for a drink of water she said she would get him one but he could not come in,she then locked the door and called the police. My wife was just going out at the time managed a good look at him and noted the make of car but only part of the number plate. The lady in question lives on her own and is just recovering from a hip replacement and lost the sight in one eye last year she is very active and her mind is intact just venerable due to age and living on her own. Tonight my wife received a call from the police asking if she could recognize the man in question she said she could by 90% by all accounts there has been a spate of this incidents in our area with at least 2 elderly people being conned out of money we now will contacted by detectives working on the case hope they catch these low lifes even though I'm out of work to stoop to this level is unthinkable.Has any body else had an experience like this?

You read every day, in the newspapers, of this kind of scam, even my own Mother-in-law, some time ago, had this problem. The Police Departments in my area, are putting out warnings as to this. Still some people, get taken in, and some hurt, when they fight for their own things, that this person tries to take from them. We all, must look out for each other.

Franciszek, nothing like that happened to me personally. But what I hear on the media such or similar methods of theft from the elderly people, basing on their naivete-good hearts -good manners, are numerous in Poland... In fact I am curious if those thugs who acted in your street had a foreign accent, as the crime method might be sadly an import from POland...

I think people all over the world, as I read, try this scam, on the old, and many times, it works. This is why I say, look out for your friends, family, and neighbors, and they will look out for you.

No these are home grown thugs we dont have any problems with Polish people and everyone that I know who have dealings with them all say the same thing that they are kind and generous hard working and enjoy letting their hair down i will keep you posted on the thugs though.

Grandma from my wife`s family was once tricked by two women who impersonated social workers. They entered the apartment and while one occupied the old lady with a conversation, the other searched the room and took the money hidden under the linen in this wardrobe: Grandma lost a few hundred zlotys. Afterwards, she never opened the door for strangers. Here is her poor apartment: polandsite.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=places&action=display&thread=286&page=1

Some time ago in a region of Warsaw my parents lived, full of elderly people, a gang operated stealing this way. They were eventually caught.

They were eventually caught. It is a method as old as the hills but there are still old people who have not heard about it and let robbers do their dirty job. This happens to the elderly who have little contact with families and long for a little attention and interest shown them by others.
