Tufta,
I want to tell you something. From my family perspective we were never very fond of Austrians. The Germans had their entnazificierungs program after the war enforced by them by the American occupation forces. That program was very good and worked. In Austria you did not have such program. The old Nazi's were spread over the conservative Austrian People's Party, ÖVP, the Austrian Social democrats, the SPÖ, and the liberals, the Freedom Party of Austria, FPÖ. (who were not that liberal, but more a sort of cover-up for old Austrian nazi's). The ÖVP is the successor of the Christian Social Party, a staunchly conservative movement founded in 1893 by the vicious anti-semite Karl Lueger, mayor of Vienna and highly controversial right-wing populist. Karl Lueger had a great influence on the young Hilter, who lived in Vienna in that time. Indirectly (or maybe directly) Lueger created the climate and fundament on which Nazism would grow. While still sometimes honored by ÖVP members for resisting Hitler, the regime built by Dollfuß was authoritarian in nature and has been dubbed as "Austrofascism".
The first party chairman of the SPÖ after the Second World War, Adolf Schärf, aryanized the office of Arnold Eisler, a Jewish lawyer, in 1938, who had to leave Austria. He took over the law firm and it was never restituted. Later on, he also helped in the aryanization process of buildings in Vienna.
The Federal Chancellor of Austria from 1953 to 1961, Julius Raab (1891 - 1964) also revealed his anti-semitism as a parliament member in 1931 when he famously branded the Socialist leader Otto Bauer an "insolent Jewish pig."
Bruno Kreisky, the Jewish Austrian Social democratic prime minister following his election in 1970, wanted to demonstrate that he was indeed "Chancellor of all Austrians", and appointed four politicians with Nazi backgrounds to his cabinet. Kreisky was notable for his allegedly apologetic approach to former Nazi party members and contemporary far-right Austrian politicians. For example, Kreisky described far-right populist Jörg Haider as "a political talent worth watching".
Many of the worst Nazi's were Austrian, so it is no coincidence that Austrians are attracted to Nazism like many Italians today are stil attracted to Fascism and Musolini. Adolf Hiltler, Arthur Seyss-Inquart, Alois Brunner, Oswald Menghin, Hanns Albin Rauter, Odilo Globocnik, senior SS Gruppenführer, Josef Fitzthum Generalleutnant der Waffen-SS und Polizei. And Nazi doctor Heinrich Gross, SS-Brigadeführer and Generalmajor of the Waffen-SS Sylvester Stadler, SS Obersturmführer Friedrich Peter, his unit was part of the Einsatzgruppen which systematically shot hundreds of thousands of Jews behind the front during the summer of 1941.
SS-Obersturmführer Irmfried Eberl (1910 — 1948), Austrian Nazi war criminal who helped to establish, and was the first commandant of, the Treblinka extermination camp.
Eduard Roschmann, Kurt Waldheim, Franz Langoth, Therese Brandl, Hans Fischböck, Karl Silberbauer, the "Butcher from Vilnius" Franz Murer (1917 – 1995), Waffen-SS Brigadeführer Franz Augsberger, the Austrian-born SS-Sturmbannführer (Major) Hermann Höfle (1911 – 1962) was deputy to Odilo Globocnik in the Aktion Reinhard program, serving as his main deportation and extermination expert. As such he was heavily involved in crimes against humanity. Franz Reichleitner (1906 — 1944) was an Austrian SS-Hauptsturmführer (Captain) who served in Operation Reinhard during the Holocaust. Reichleitner served as the second and last commandant of Sobibor extermination camp from 1 September 1942 until the camp's closure on or about 17 October 1943. As the commanding officer of the camp, Franz Reichleitner directly perpetrated the genocide of Jews.
Kajetan "Kai" Mühlmann (26 June 1898 – 2 August 1958) was an Austrian art historian who was an officer in the SS and played a major role in the expropriation of art by the Nazis, particularly in Poland. He worked with Arthur Seyss-Inquart in the initial Nazi government in Vienna following the Anschluss, in the General Government (occupied Poland) and in The Hague where he headed an art clearing house in the occupied Netherlands known as the Dienstelle Mühlmann (Mühlmann Agency).
The Austrian right-wing extremist journalist, Erich Kern, (1906 - 1991) became noted as a writer of revisionist books that sought to glorify the activities of the German soldiers during the Second World War.
The Austrian art historian Dagobert Frey (Vienna, April 23, 1883 – May 13, 1962, Stuttgart) was responsible for the theft of the most valuable European and Polish collections from the Warsaw and Kraków museums and national art galleries during the Nazi German occupation of Poland.
