As a child I loved reading comic books which were so colourful and effectively dissipated grey communist reality. Some series, especially for older children, had a seperate black and white quasi documentary strip inside about a heroic action by an individual who was later awarded with the medal For Sacrifice and Courage. Mostly those actions concerned helping sb who was drowning or in fire, but not only. The images of rescuers were always published.
Of course, I dreamt about rescuing sb and becoming a hero. (I am still waiting for my chance - armed with a multifunction Czech army knife, I roam urban and rural areas looking for potential victims. )
We can complain about communists and their system, but certainly they knew how to turn kids into decent citizens, and I don`t mean 1984 by Orwell.
