I prefer the previous facade of the building rather than the modern... , but nobody asked me before they changed it!

The incident took place in the Kaczory commune in Greater Poland , where the local community has been haunted by the kidnapping for several days.- A young woman was kidnapped in Skarbowo. So, is the Kaczory commune where the Roma community lives? Is it exclusively Roma or do other ethnic groups live there as well? I'm asking because I don't come across the word "commune" too often these days. Back in the 1970's it was common for people to form communes (here in the U.S.), most of which didn't survive long, but I'm curious about this one in Poland.

I once read that it is part of the Roma tradition that, out of respect, no child should know more than their father, so most are not educated beyond the level that their father was educated. Supposedly, this is a reason why the Roma remain largely in poverty, because their educational level as a group never advances. What do you think, Bonobo, is that just a myth, or is there truth to it?
Back in the 1940s here in the U.S. the Roma were still traveling by horses and wagons. My mother was a young nurse working in a hospital. The hospital had a very long circular driveway in front of it, which was the border of a expansive lawn spreading down to the street at the foot of the driveway. One day, the Gypsies arrived with their caravan in which the Gypsy King was traveling with his son, the Gypsy Prince. The Prince had fallen ill, and they came seeking medical care for the young man. Their wagons filled the length of the long driveway on arrival. They were given permission to set up their camp on the front lawn while the Prince was receiving treatment. Unfortunately, the Prince did not survive his illness. But the experience of the Gypsies camped on the front lawn of the hospital remained a fond memory of my mother her entire life, and she loved to share it with us.

Yes, I am aware that PiS finally had to relinquish its power, but of course, not being engaged with the forum at that time, I did not have the blow by blow description that I'm sure you would have been able to provide. I remember thinking that you would be very happy with the change of power in your beloved Poland. Unfortunately for the U.S., at least from my perspective, it looks like Donald Trump will once again be running for president, unless the Supreme Court decides otherwise. There is a movement to keep him off the ballot, claiming that he is ineligible to run for president because of his role in the "insurrection" that occurred at the US Capitol Building during the final days of his presidency. The powers-that-be are arguing over whether what occurred when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Building was actually an insurrection or not and whether or not it was instigated by Trump... The popularity tide is also turning against Joe Biden right now, with many claiming he is too old to run for another term of the presidency. He stumbles a bit in his speech and often forgets things, and many people even in his Democratic Party think that it is time for a change. In my opinion, I don't want to see EITHER of them as President. I couldn't stand to have to listen to Trump for another four years, and inflation and other economic issues have been TERRIBLE under Biden. I say, let's wipe the slate clean and get some new blood in there... And you may remember how much I hate politics! (If there were better politicians, perhaps I wouldn't be so disgusted with politics!)

Well, actually, the woke culture has pretty much determined that because books with religious themes are not politically correct (at least according to their view), they shouldn't be in public schools; so something like Quo Vadis would already be implicitly banned before the "Cons", as you call them, can even get to them!

Polish Solidarity on the Ukrainian Border Since 24 February 2022, when the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, several million refugees have already been taken in by Poles. In the Lublin region, near the Bug River, which marks the border with Ukraine and Belarus, farmers, shopkeepers, a photographer and a teacher tell how their daily lives have been transformed by the outbreak of this war. www.arte.tv/en/videos/108686-000-A/polish-solidarity-on-the-ukrainian-border/Hi Pieter, This video cannot be viewed from my location. It's too bad, I wanted to watch it and learn about the situation from people who are living their lives in the midst of it. Thanks for trying, and hopefully, many others will be able to access it! The Second World War left scars in old people who survived Gestapo or SD prisons, Concentrationcamps, the execution of their parents. Such old Dutch people today said on national tv that the things that are happening in Ukraine and the images they see brings back the Second World War back to them. Fear, anxiety, bad sleeping and old images that hounted them came back, because some of the terrible images they saw of suffering women, children, elderly or abused or dead soldiers reminded them of their time from 1940-1945 in the Netherlands, but also abroad as slave workers in Germany that suffered under bad treatment and allied bombings in Germany, people that were in German/Austrian Nazi concentration camps in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Poland or the Czech Republic. Pieter, Yes, I can imagine that this is very difficult for those who experienced World War II. The images I see of things happening in Ukraine horrify me and remind me of many images I have seen of WWII! I wasn't even alive then, but just seeing those past images affects me deeply, as the current images coming from Ukraine do now... What many people have feared since 1945 has come true: that the time would come when we would see that humankind has not learned the bitter lesson of the past!

When I look at all these Polish Roman Catholic tradiotions, religious days like Christmas, Pentecost, Easter, the Feast of the Ascension and the Assumption of Mary, and the Holy mass and the Catholic community life, the 7 sacraments, and the rich Roman Catholic pillar we had in the 19th and 20th centuries (from the 19th century until halfway the sixties) we have lost a religious life, spirituality, Catholic values, the beauty of Catholic life, rituals, community, culture and education, a lot is lost in the Netherlands. The Rich Catholic pillar had it’s churches, cathedrals, Basilicas, Prince Bishop pallaces, monasteries, universities, kindergarten, primary schools, highschools, Boarding schools, monasteries, poltical party ( en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_People%27s_Party ), Catholic Union ( en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Catholic_Trade_Union_Federation ), the Catholic Workers Movement (Katholieke Arbeidersbeweging, KAB), Catholic Radio & TV Broadcast Corporation KRO-RKK ( en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katholieke_Radio_Omroep ). Hello Pieter, What you are saying here is a sad truth in many places in the Western world during our current times. I mourn for the loss of the faith in many countries, as the faith was instrumental in the development of western culture and brought the true, the good, and the beautiful to peoples' live. I appreciate that you recognize what has been lost and acknowledge the value it had (and still has...). I try to combat this loss of moral structure, etc., by embracing the faith and trying to continue the way of life it inspires. Hopefully, we might see the day when people will recognize what has been lost and begin to rebuild culture through one person's life at a time. Jeanne

I have looked at the images on this entire thread many times, and strangely (for someone like me who is detail-oriented), I never before noticed the monstrances with the Blessed Sacrament. But today, when I was looking at the latest images with the Ukrainian war themes, I noticed them right away. Going back, I looked at all the earlier postings to see if they too had the monstrances, and this time I did see them. Very strange...

Happy Easter to everybody! Although it is difficult to imagine our Slavic brothers who are dying in Ukraine right now or have become refugees coz their own homes have been destroyed by Russian aggressors may have Happy Easter. But the holiday is a time of hope and a symbol of new life. Let them and us not lose hope that the cruel war will end and Ukrainians will again live in peace. Let the light triumph over darkness. Well said, thanks Bonobo. Happy Easter to all!

I want to thank both Bonobo who has been working very hard to provide this very extensive information from his Polish perspective and also Pjotr who is now also contributing with his good sources. Your quality of reporting on what is happening in Ukraine and surrounding countries is superb and rivals the media that is available to me in the U.S.
How sad that this is what Europe has come to... God help the Ukrainian people and those supporting them.

Yes. Regardless of the outcome of the war, Ukraine has already won. She won because Putin completed the process of creating the Ukrainian nation, united it and gave it a clear vision of the future, where it wants to belong and where it does not. Putin wanted to weaken, liquidate Ukraine, but he achieved just the opposite. He gave the Ukrainians a lot of self-confidence, which probably not everyone would do just like that. Ukraine will survive because Ukrainian society and the Ukrainian army showed incredible determination, pride in their own country, which was further strengthened by this war. Ukraine will emerge victorious from this conflict, even if it is not a military victory. But in many other aspects it will be a victory. Well said!

I'm not sure I will find it here but I will keep an eye out. This or any other provided it is natural - my previous experiences were with artificially saturated and flavoured substitutes. Or am I still naive believing this one is natural, too??? hahaha Coz nothing is really natural unless you produce it in your own house or field. Do you have laws that state ingredients must be listed on food products? We have these laws in the U.S., and I must say, when the ingredients first started to be printed on labels, I was shocked to learn what was in some products...long lists of unpronounceable chemicals! By now, I know to automatically read ingredients before purchasing anything!

I decided to buy a jar of pollen I didn't know you could buy pollen. I've never seen it over here, although Royal Jelly and beeswax products are readily available. I quite often buy products from a company called Burt's Bees: www.burtsbees.co.uk/shop-all.listMaybe I should look in health food shops for pollen..... I've never seen pollen being sold here in the U.S., though it's possible some health food stores may carry it. We also have Burt's Bees products, but their products here are mostly skin-care and make-up type items that are also on the U.K. website. In the U.K. does Burt's Bees have food products?

We have a lot of bats around here in the U.S. We see them in the summer at twilight, swooping around the sky. I like to watch them, but I wouldn't want to find one in my house. This happens quite frequently in the area where I live; they come down chimneys, or through windows with broken or missing screens. They are carriers of rabies here, so it's best to avoid all contact with them...

As a believer, I think it's a good thing whenever people can be reminded of the presence of God in their lives. I don't think doing these blessings infringes on the rights of non-believers, so yes, why not? Yes, if local communities where new openings take place have nothing against. On the other hand, there is the concept of the separation of two entities - state and church - and let`s be honest - such blessings are unthinkable of in even quite religious countries, e.g., the USA. Yes, but I thought we were discussing Poland...after all this is a Polish forum! I've seen photos here of priests in the Polish schools and being generally out and about, and no one seems upset about that. And you are right, it would be different in the U.S. The only type of new facility you would see a priest blessing here is one that had some connection to the Church...schools, hospitals, low-income housing, etc.

I thought I was just disoriented when I came on the forum today and wondered what was going on, but this explains it! Yes, I think it is a change that makes good sense, and that's a pretty positive statement from someone who normally hates change. So, I'm willing to try it, and if after awhile I decide I don't like it, I'll complain!
