The topic of this post was proposed by Jeanne. Stork became an inseperable part of Polish landscape centuries ago. They have also assumed an important position in Poles` patriotic perception of their country. Every fourth stork in the world comes from Poland. There is no other country which can boast nesting of so many birds of this species. It is estimated that recently there have been around 40 900 pairs of storks nesting on the Polish territory.
Storks have been present in the Polish folk culture for centuries. There are a lot of superstitions and beliefs which are strictly connected with the birds and the role they play in our lives. Among the most common ones there is of course the superstition about storks bringing babies. Constructing of stork nest in a particular household is believed to bring its owner good luck and prosperity. It is also believed to protect a house from thunder strikes. Storks are also appreciated for their role as beneficial animals: they feed on species considered to be pests, such as rodents. There is also a belief the stork couples stick together all their lives as well as very often people would say that the same couple visits them every year. The latter is possible to verify only provided the birds have been marked with rings. The birds tend to divide the nests into better or worse situated rather than into our and strange. In case storks came back to their own nest every year, no frequent fights would occur.
Storks, being constantly present in Polish landscape, remain its vivid symbol and have found their place in our folktales, proverbial sayings, superstitions thus entering Polish culture as its inseparable symbol. Their nests can be seen on rooftops, towers, chimneys, telephone-poles, trees, and specially constructed nest towers. Covering a stork shaped advertisement of a known company. It attracts storks so much they don`t want to leave for Africa.

Bonobo, Thank you. What would a Polish forum be without pictures of storks? Anyone who is interested in a live webcam of a storks' nest in Poland can go to www.bociany.kalinski.pl for a great view. The storks have just returned from their winter sojourn in Africa within the last day or so. They have not yet even tidied up the nest. For those viewers who do not speak Polish (myself included) you have to click on where it says 'otworz przekaz poklatkowy' under the large rectangle. That will open the camera.

Storks have found their place in Polish culture. I have already presented a famous Polish painting.
Now a poem by a great emigrant Polish poet from 19 century: C.K. Norwid.
MY SONG (II) Cyprian Kamil Norwid
For that land where a scrap of bread is picked up From the ground out of reverence For Heaven's gifts... I am homesick, Lord!...
For the land where it's a great travesty To harm a stork's nest in a pear tree, For storks serve us all... I am homesick, Lord!...
For the land where we greet each other In the ancient Christian custom: "May Christ's name be praised!" I am homesick, Lord!...
I long still for yet another thing, likewise innocent, For I no longer know where to find My abode... I am homesick, Lord!
For worrying-not and thinking-not, For those whose yes means yes --- and no means no --- Without shades of grey... I am homesick, Lord!
I long for that distant place, where someone cares for me! It must be thus, though my friendship Will never come to pass!... I am homesick, Lord!
-translated by Walter Whipple

That's enough to make one cry... Yes, Norwid was a poet of tragic motives. I must say I didn`t like him except for a few poems, including this one .... Altogether, very depressing. A stork in its nest This guy has 55 films about storks. Birdlover! www.youtube.com/user/bocianyustronAnother poem, as soundtrack in a youtube film Dzieci: - Skądżeś to wrócił, ty boćku siwy, Na nasze łąki, na nasze niwy? Bocian: - Z dalekiej strony, zza siódmych mórz, A za mną wiosna idzie tuż, tuż. Dzieci: - A czemu boćku, gdy spadną szrony, Lecisz, uciekasz w dalekie strony? A czym nakarmię pisklęta swe? Dzieci: - Są przecież grzyby, jest w snopach zboże, Owies, pszenica... Lubisz je może? Bocian: - Za te przysmaki całuję rączki - Ja wolę żaby albo zajączki.

Here are some fun stork pics: It's a bird, it's a plane, it's...both! They said it was a great family car... And a stork poem from Shel Silverstein: You know the stork brings babies, But did you also know He comes and gets the older folks When it's their time to go?
Zooms right down and scoops them up, Then flaps back out the door And flies them to the factory where They all were made before.
And there their skin is tightened up, Their muscles all are toned, Their wrinkles all are ironed out, They're given brand-new bones.
Ol' bent backs are straightened up, New teeth are added too, Tired hearts are all repaired And made to work like new.
Their memories are all removed And they're shrunk down, and then The stork flies them back down to earth As newborn babes again.

Great news. Hungarian vet surgeons from Bird Clinic reconstructed a lost part of a stork`s beak. It is made of special resin. m.onet.pl/_m/128d6977c5a0cb45633514c6f3d3f251,14,1.jpg m.onet.pl/_m/eb1d78c0496f16ef8733fa3fb0067567,9,1.jpg www.tvn24.pl/-1,1600838,0,1,bocian-dostanie-sztuczny-dziob,wiadomosc.html It is not fair. It should be performed in Poland. But Polish vets are not so advanced. A stork which recently lost a leg is doomed to be put to sleep. bi.gazeta.pl/im/1/6617/z6617261X.jpgwyborcza.pl/1,75248,6617277,Cierpienia_bociana_live.html

One bird has a broken leg and consequently cannot sit on the eggs. When it's his/her turn to sit and keep the eggs warm, they cannot do it, so the eggs get cold. There will be no baby storks in this nest this season. ...oh, actually, I just noticed that at the bottom of the photo it says 'kalinski', so I guess this is the same nest.

I have found a stork section in another Polish site. Jigsaw puzzles storks.poland.pl/multimedia/index,Puzzles,cid,3152.htm Proverbs from the site * Bocian na ogonie jaskółkę przynosi. / Stork brings a sparrow on its tail. * Jak bocian przyleci, możecie wyjść dzieci. / When the stork comes, you may come out kids. * Gdzie bocian na gnieździe, tam piorun nie uderzy / Thunder does not strike a stork nest. * Koza wrzosu, bocian żaby, a żaba błota szuka. / A goat seeks heather, a stork seeks a frog, and a frog - a bog. * Gdy na święty Józef bociek przybędzie, to już śnieg nie będzie. / If storks arrive on St Joseph, the snows shall melt (19 March). * Na Zwiastowanie bocian w gnieździe stanie. / On the Annunciation a stork shall stand on its nest ( 25 March). * Na święty Wojciech zniesie jajko bociek. / On St Wojciech’s a stork lays an egg (23 April). * Na Bartłomieja apostoła bocian do drogi dzieci woła. / on St Bartholomew ‘s storks prepare for a journey (24 August). storks.poland.pl/funny_side/article,Proverbs,id,88702.htm Legend Funny Side Legend from Latowicz Many generations of inhabitants of Latowicz (Mazovia region) know the legend of Queen Bona and storks, which is a proof that storks have been present in Latowicz for ages. According to the legend, it was Queen Bona, who named this little town by the name of Latowicz. She had her mansion there. She liked the neighbourhood very much and used to spend her summer holidays there. The mansion was surrounded by great ponds. The queen, who wanted to create a substitute of Italy in Latowicz, furnished the ponds with a peculiar breed of frogs. Their were famous for incredibly noisy croaking. People of Latowicz could not stand the noise and they complained to the queen, but she did not to listen to their pleas. These were storks, that saved Latowicz and its inhabitants. The birds heard noisy croaking and came for a feast. They ate all the noisy Italian frogs. From this day, people of Latowicz take care of all the storks in the region.

Storks have arrived in Pentowo in the Podlasie region, eastern Poland, signalling the arrival of Spring in Poland. Finally!
The birds of Pentowie determine the rhythm of life. They depart at the end of August and return as Poland emerges from one of its long winters.
Pentowo, on the Narew River, won the title of "European Stork Village" in 2001. One of the largest breeding colonies of the birds in the world, the village fills every year with photographers and tourists. Currently visitors from New Zealand, Italy, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, USA, even Cameroon are there to witness the nesting storks.
Up to 50,000 storks fly from Africa to Poland. The birds have also been spotted in villages hugging the Bug River near Lublin in the south east. Residents are breathing a sigh of relief - because storks mean Spring! www.thenews.pl/national/artykul128157_storks-signal-start-of-spring.html

To my Polish-speaking friends: Would someone be kind enough to go to: www.bociany.kalinski.pl/and tell me what I need to do to get the camera view of the storks' nest, what I need to click on, etc. That is, if it is even operative this year. All I get is a black square. Perhaps by reading some of the postings in Polish from this year you might be able to tell me what's going on...if there is some problem with the website, or perhaps with the nest as was the case last season. Thanks in advance!! Jeanne

A unique behavior. A doting male stork built a nest on the ground because his female partner has problems with flying. Poles love storks. If you could read comments on the site......: www.fakt.pl/Zbudowal-zonie-gniazdo-na-ziemi,artykuly,70612,1.html

I haven`t taken a photo of a stork this year yet. I only saw a few protruding heads in nests. But the winter attack in May is really a surprise for storks.

Polish storks homeless after storms 26.07.2011 09:46 Scores of storks have been made homeless as a result of storms that tore through Poland in recent days.
A campaign to save the birds is already under way, with dozens of the long-beaked fellows being transferred to refuges in the Warmia-Masuria voivodeship in north Poland.
Recent storms laid waste to countless nests across the country. Younger birds in particular were at risk, being knocked to the ground by intense winds.
Six centres in Warmia-Masuria have been tending to injured or homeless – occasionally both – birds.
Dr Ewa Rumunska, from the Rehabilitation Centre for Wild Birds in Bukwald, noted that many of the younger birds stood no chance in the recent conditions.
“Fortunately, many of them were big enough to fly up somewhere to a safe place,” she said.
Environmentalists are receiving daily calls concerning new cases of stricken storks. Policemen, firemen, local municipality offices and members of the public have all been making reports.
It has been estimated that 50,000 pairs of the birds nest in Poland each year, amounting to a fifth of the world's population of white storks.
Over the next three years, the EU will be funnelling some 6.5 million zloty (1.6 million euro) towards protecting Poland's storks
