One thing is for sure - I have never been fascinated with horses, though I must say I like their smell. Poland’s Janow Podlaski horse auction begins 05.08.2011 12:41 President Bronis³aw Komorowski will inaugurate today the world-renowned 33rd Days of Arabian Horses in the eastern locality of Janow Podlaski.
Held under the president’s honorary patronage the event is an opportunity for horse breeders from around the globe to admire Polish Arabians famous around the world.
The focal point of the three-day event is the “Pride of Poland”, the famous auction of Arabian horses which will take place in Janow Podlaski on Sunday.
Thirty two top class horses – 20 mares and 2 stallions – are to be auctioned.
Janow Podlaski is Poland’s oldest horse stud farm, famous for its purebred Arabians. To this day the farm has maintained its two breeding lines: the pure Arabians and the Anglo-Arabian half bloods.
The Pride of Poland Auction gathers breeders from around the world. Among frequent attendees are the Rolling Stones’ drummer Charlie Watts and his wife Shirley.
In 2008, over one million euro was paid for the 13-year-old champion mare Kwestura, bought by a bidder from the Middle East.www.janow.arabians.pl/en/ The Janów Podlaski Stud, established in 1817, the oldest state owned and operated horse stud in Poland, is also one of the most beautiful. Despite the name, the stud is situated two kilometers from Janów itself, in a village called Wygoda. Picturesquely set amidst lush meadows along the border river Bug, Janów Podlaski is undeniably a true "equine paradise". Although the breeding of purebred Arabians has been primarily responsible for Janów Podlaski's fame worldwide, the Stud's many achievements within the realm of Anglo-Arabian breeding are also worthy of recognition and respect. A big attraction is the 19th Century stable complex situated in an old park. The oldest of these, the Clock Stable ("Zegarowa") and the Main Stallion Stable ("Czolowa") stemming from 1848 and 1841 respectively are the works of the famous architect Henryk Marconi. fotoblog.borkowscy.pl/2010/04/09/fotoreportaz-po-stadninie-w-janowie-podlaskim/?nggpage=2

In the Netherlands on the peninsula where my parents live, the Island is transformed into a horse island, thousands of horses. I wonder why horse driving has become a *girls sport. In the Netherlands only girls are interested in horses and go to "Reitbahnen" (horse gathering and driving places, I don't know the English name). Is it the same in Poland and the USA?
I think Poland and the USA have a lot of space to drive horses!
* Don't get me wrong I love watching beautiful girls and nice women drive horses.

That is a very accurate observation, Peter! Now, when I recall my students who took up horse riding as a hobby, they were all girls! And when we come across horse riders on vacations, most are females. I think it is connected with female delicacy. Horses need subtle treatment and women are specialists in it. Males, being more aggressive and less delicate, don`t appreciate horses. They prefer mechanical horses in their motorcycles and cars which can be driven everywhere while horses only in the country fields.

Is it the same in Poland and the USA? This is definitely true in the USA also! Young girls who are preteens...9, 10, 11 or 12...especially like horses and if they do not have access to them, then they love reading about them! There are whole sets of book series (fiction) written about horses and the culture surrounding them. The school I work in is located in a semi-rural town which boasts many horse farms and riding schools, so many of my students do have access to the horses. It is, however, primarily a "rich [wo]man's sport".

It is, however, primarily a "rich [wo]man's sport". It is interesting. Do you suggest that horse riding in US is an expensive hobby, not for an average wallet?

Riding lessons can be expensive, but I suppose once the person knows how to ride just renting a horse to ride on occasion might be affordable...but when the hope is to own a horse, that's when the money is required. Boarding a horse at a stable or keeping one on one's own property is VERY expensive!

Boarding a horse at a stable or keeping one on one's own property is VERY expensive! It is the same here. However renting a horse 'per hour' is not expensive. It is around 30 PLN. For children who additionally help around, clean horses etc. the needed sum is lower. Generally horse-riding is very popular and there are very numerous stables around Warsaw.

Michałów Stud www.michalow.arabians.pl/en/Michałów State Stud has been breeding purebred Arabian horses for sixty years. With over 100 broodmares and 400 Arabians at the stud, Michałów is the largest Arabian facility in Poland, and is considered one of the largest and most prestigious farms in Europe, not to mention the entire globe. At present, Michałów still operates as a subsidiary of the Agriculture Property Agency of the State Treasury in Warsaw.
Michałów is situated in the Holy Cross Mountain (Świętokrzyskie) province of Poland, nestled in a beautiful and bountiful region known as "Ponidzie", between the well-known Pińczów and Wodzisław glacial crests. Just 45 km south of Kielce, 230 km south of Warsaw and 100 km north of Cracow, Michałów lies within the crux of authentic "Old Poland" - the ancient capital of Wislica is found just 25 km to the northeast of the stud, where civilization thrived under Christian rule a century before Mieszko I was crowned as the first Polish King in 966.
Michałów is well known for the Stud's characteristic white stone stables, built in 1960's from limestone quarried in nearby Pińczów. Built together in a compact, well-designed unit, these stables are ideally suited for horse breeding.
As a result of its unique valley location, Michałów enjoys a very specific microclimate, with low annual rainfall, shallow topsoil, high soil calcium levels and dry, arid conditions perfect for the maturation of hay and pasture - in other words, as near as authentic desert conditions as is possible in Europe for raising Arabian horses. Michałów also breeds rare Appaloosa(leopard)-patterned Malopolska sporthorses, as well as a small group of Shetland ponies.
We encourage all visitors and enthusiasts to the website to sign our Guest Book and check out the Latest News.

Unfortunately, when PiS came to power in 2015, they immediately removed the old managements and installed their own guys who were not horse experts, only loyal PiS members. The studs started to deteriorate, directors have been dismissed a few times but to no avail. Shame on PiS for killing such a wonderful tradition. navva.org/poland/poland/pride-of-poland-2018-result-twice-lower-than-reported/Pride of Poland 2018: Result twice lower than reported However, half of the horses auctioned at the prestigious Pride auction from Poland in 2018 have not been sold. As reported by RMF FM reporter, they appeared again in the offer of the famous Polish breeding. This means that the auction ultimately did not earn half a million euros, but twice as much. This is one of the worst results in the history of the event.
After the end of the edition of the Pride of Poland auction, it was stated that 6 horses were sold for a total amount of EUR 501 thousand. Now it appears that this result is much lower – the stallions again offered for sale 3 mares, which were auctioned during the August event in Janów Podlaski. Two of them belong to the stud dog at Michałów – Parmana offered for 180 thousand euros for Pride of Poland and Elbera for 52 thousand euros. Both will be put back for sale in the wintertime, which the kennel organizes on December 15th. The third of the mares, Perika, was auctioned in Janów Podlaski for 15,000 euros, but the sale did not take place – the animal from the Białka stud farm was re-tendered last Saturday. Although the buyers – from Belgium and Israel – auctioned their horses, they ultimately did not pay for it – confirms in an interview with RMF FM Monika Słowik, Michałów stud, who took over the variety after the Pride of Poland auction this year. Elbera and Parmana were sold, unfortunately they were not paid and therefore removed, so the stud farm repeats the offer for these two mares – describes Monika Słowik. He adds that none of the potential buyers contacted the stud farm in Michałów, so it is not known why they eventually gave up the auctioned animals. All this means that the end result of the Pride of Poland auction is much lower than previously reported. Merchants who did not pay for horses paid in advance a deposit that had been lost to the stallions – but only 6,000 euros in total. Instead of EUR 501 thousand, Pride of Poland 2018 earned a modest amount of EUR 259 thousand – one of the worst results in the history of the auction. In 2017 the horses were sold for 410,000 euros, in 2016 for 1 million 271 thousand euros and in 2015 for 4 million euros.
