Thinking about Lake Superior reminded me of another powerful song from the past. The song is called The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. It is about a freighter that sank in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975 during one of the area's infamous November storms. It always gives me the chills too. I can't even imagine what it must have been like to be on that freighter with 25ft. waves coming at it. And of course Gordon Lightfoot's voice is amazing!  |

In the literature quotes corner I put the quote from The Heart of Darkness by the Polish author Joseph Conrad. The film Apocalypse Now, based on the book a little, by A. Coppola is my favourite war film. When it was released in Poland in early 80s, I went to the cinema a few times. War is evil, yes, but it can be fascinating too (especially when you sit in the cinema or before the TV on a comfortable sofa). The most fascinating scene is the helicopter attack on a peaceful Vietnamese village, with Wagner`s brilliant music in the background. What a shocking combination. Extermination of villagers accompanied by classical music.... The film was on in the Moscow cinema when the martial law was introduced by communists in 1981. For Poles it was Apocalypse Now.... I saw that ship in route, and the waves on the lake often reach higher than 25 ft. and many have said, the great lakes are worst than the oceans. I have been out on a ship in some major storms, nothing like it. This was in my youth, I could not, or would not do it now.

I used to play CDs of Celtic music for my children when they were infants. One of my favorite Celtic artists is Loreena McKennitt. I remember spending many happy hours sitting and rocking my children to these songs.  The videos are quite beautiful as well. A few more... (music, chants, then words at about 3:05) |

Thanks to our Polish friends in the forum, I cannot seem to get the song "Rock Around the Clock" out of my head. ;D It is a great song, and in the U.S. it was used as the original intro song to a much loved television series - Happy Days). Feel free to tap your feet or even dance to it if you want to (it's hard to resist)...  |

When this song first came out, by Bill Halley and the Comet's, I saw them at the Chicago Theater, live, when I was young. They were great.

Anyone have any favorite holiday music? I have a lot of music by Mannheim Steamroller that I really like. Two other favorite songs include "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" by the Barenaked Ladies/Sarah McLachlan and "Carol of the Bells" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Two very different sounds, but both are great! |

Since it is still a bit early here for the full blown Christmas music let me present two musical pieces which include, or cite a Christmas carol entitled 'Lulajże Jezuniu'. These are Fryderyk Chopin's Scherzo No.1, Op.20. (for those impatient- scroll to 4 minutes 10 seconds) and 'Wigilia na Syberii' by Kaczmarski & Gintrowski (3 min. 36 second). Both are very powerful musical works although very different in the means used. However 'Wigilia na Syberii' needs knowledge of Polish to be fully appreciated. The soundtrack of Black Hawk Down was one of those few CDs with film music I have bought. The composer is Hans Zimmer.
Ballad based on African motifs, with random scenes from the movie.
Another ballad, the absolute hit, starts at 1.24, with photos from the film
The same ballad in the dramatic fight scene
To tell the truth, it was the last CD I bought. It didn`t include the theme which I was crazy about watching the film. I decided never to buy film CDs.
My first soundtrack CD was from The Last of the Mohicans, 1991. I still listen to it today, the kind of music I would take it to the desert island.

Looking for Nikifor on youtube, I accidentally ran into Krystyna Janda`s melancholic song. It is really amazing.

I have always liked it. Do I have to listen to heavy metal only?
The song is enriched with paintings by Tamara Lempicka, early 20 century artist.

I had the opportunity to hear - and see! - Harry Connick Jr. last night. I have been a fan of his for a long time, and let me tell you - his voice and piano playing are even more amazing live. The band was awesome as well.
He sang a variety of both holiday and non-holiday songs. I wasn't able to find very many of the ones he sang on youtube, but this is a classic one:
Sorry that the video isn't very exciting (I was looking for one of him performing).

But I have to admit that I prefer Harry Connick Jr.'s music. But why not take a moment to listen to Lawrence Welk jam: Bonobo, see what you could have become if you had stuck with the accordion? ;D |

I hope that next year, when there will be no single particle of dust anymore to hoover, you'll post some pics or tunes or anything. I miss it! Tufta, I heard this song the other day and it made me smile for two reasons - it is a great song (love the guitar and the way Ann Wilson draws out the word barracuda), and it brings back memories of the car I drove as a teenager, which was the Dodge version of the Plymouth Barracuda. uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hpkitLUbeEg |

I had planned to ask if the Village People's 'YMCA' was known in Poland. I remember roller skating to the song (and yes, forming the letters too). Thank goodness there isn't any video of that! |
