In another thread Mike and Loco started talking about their cars. Both have Mercedes. I have a Benz, CLK320 and love it. One of my best cars. Mike, do you drive this one? Really? Only two doors? Loco, this one looks like 2 doors too? They must have listened to Janice Joplin a lot. Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends,Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,So oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ? That's it!

I don't love the Germans, for what they did to the Polish in the war, but they make a fine car.

My first car was Fiat 126p, called baby. I drove it in 80s and early 90s when at uni. Having a car was a big deal then. Few students had one. It wasn`t so bad for those times unless you had a big family. For a student just perfect. Safety was its main problem. Many people died in totally wrecked baby fiats.

so, you don't have a car now? I do but it is still not time to say what one. My next car after baby fiat was another Italian car -Fiat 127. I bought it for the first money I earned as a teacher in the beginning of 1990s. Why that model? In our home there was a book about repairing 127, there were pictures and while browsing through it as a child, the image of the car got stuck in my mind. As a young man, I wanted to have it. I loved this car so much that I drove it for 7 years and put a lot of money into it because it was vintage (year of production -1974!!!) and spare parts were scarce. Isn`t this fastback line just lovely? I was so much in love with it.... upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/29/Fiat_127-1b.JPG/800px-Fiat_127-1b.JPG

Do many Polish people consider their vehicles to be status symbols or a reflection of their personal traits (flashy, sporty, earth-conscious, etc.)?
What are the most popular types of vehicles?

Today most people in Poland get cars for practical reasons. But their choice is almost always based on financial status. Most popular types are German cars.

Ah yes, Renault...it brings back fond memories for me of my drivers education class. My favorite car to practice in was a little red Renault Alliance. I did not have such a car myself. I drove a 70's era "muscle car".

I was talking about all cars in general. Volkswagen, Ford, Opel - they are known and popular makes. Cheap to buy at second hand junk yards in Germany, spare parts available cheaply too, cars in good condition etc etc.

I have recently seen a few of these Smart cars on the road. They are unbelievably small! I'm all for looking to make cars more fuel efficient and/or less dependent on fossil fuels, but I would be afraid to drive one with all of the commercial trucks, pickup trucks, and SUVs on the roads today. Then again, it does appear that they can be modified a bit... ;D ;D

The smart car holds two very well, and a small bit of trunk space, but great mileage, and built strong, by Benz. I may get one as a second car when they come here, in numbers.

You are right to worry about the environment but even more right to worry about the safety. This car shouldn`t be driven out of town where cars speed a lot. In the city traffic the impact of the collision is still acceptable. Today`s crash - Smart demolished a truck. www.tvn24.pl/-1,1570127,0,1,smart-wjechal-w-tira,wiadomosc.html

They are a great city car, well built, strong, good mileage, nice price, made by Benz. When they hit here in the U.S.A. they will go over big. They have three models now.
