Monkey years usually bring turbulence, sudden changes, unexpected twists, mayhem. Will it also happen this year? It already seems to be happening with protests, etc.!

Yes, the "monkey" was right about the Monkey Year! Too bad you were right about the turbulence/violence, though...

Chinese horoscope proves its usefulness in my job too. I remember two years which made a lasting impression on me. Students of 2008-2011 were Monkeys born in 1992. When I first met them in class and heard them talk in English, my jaw dropped in amazement. I have never had, even till today, such proficient users. No wonder I decided to do with them the most advanced book I have ever used in my teaching career.
The Wu Xing (Five Elements) sign of the Monkey is Metal (Jin), so the animal stands for brilliance and perseverance. According to Chinese zodiac analysis, people born in a Year of the Monkey always have smart, agile and active characteristics. They are endowed with highly adaptable abilities because of their complicated living environment. People born in the Year of the Monkey according to the Chinese zodiac always have enviable abilities and wisdom. Their skills and smart ideas can be seen by others when they are very young. A sharp foresight and a unique perspective promote their development in every aspect. Other people are always amazed at their acute intuition and predictive powers. If there is an established goal, they apply strong actions to achieve it. A strong curiosity causes them to want to bravely try everything interesting. ‘All bark and no bite’ is not their lifestyle. They win a high popularity among others because of their amicability and kindness. They always try their best to help others in daily life. An upbeat attitude always influences them and everyone around them. www.travelchinaguide.com/intro/social_customs/zodiac/monkey/Another memorable class was Ox, 2013-2016, born in 1997. Thanks to them, my school again went up in the education ratings in Krakow region. Although Oxen lack Monkeys` wit, they are dilligent and industrious people. So were my students. If I had wanted, I could have had them do boring grammar exercises for 3 hours, and nobody would have utter a word of complaint. They just opened the book and got down to work. I had noticed their propensity to hard work and adapted to it - I introduced a few novelties in my teaching and rushed with material. I also tried to control my chaotic and lazy attitude and become as hard working as my students - we practised writing a lot of essays and other texts which I had to check, the most tedious job for me. Ranking second in Chinese zodiacal signs, the Ox is huge. People often use it to indicate something big in size or number. People born in the Year of Ox bear persistent, simple, honest, and straightforward characteristics. They are talent leaders with strong faith, and strong devotion to work. They are contemplative before taking actions, not easily affected by the surroundings but just follow their concept and ability. Being conservative with a lack of wit in speaking, they usually look silent and sometimes stubborn in their old ways.
Strengths honest, industrious, patient, cautious, level-headed, strong-willed, persistent
Thanks to these two years of students, I got the head teacher`s prize for the best teacher, twice.

Nooooo....I'm sure you got the prize for your talents...not the students' talents...come on, Bonobo, don't be so humble...it's out of character! My talents only work with the right people. All that high talk about determined teachers being able to teach anyone is an urban legend. My car mechanic once told me a folk wisdom of his own: if they don`t want to learn, you won`t teach them, even if you flew to the moon. I worked with a teacher who used to say, "The students learn despite the teachers!" (She really said "the students learn in spite of the teachers" but I thought you might miss the meaning because of the word spite. The two phrases mean the same thing...)

Yes, some students spite their teachers and vice versa, but not me. Well, yes, I spite some students but only those who tend to ignore my efforts in class. I punish them severely, e.g., I decline to accept them as friends on Facebook. They beg me to but I remain adamant.
