Stripes mean distinction and students get them on their certificates after reaching the average of 4.75, in the scale from 1 to 6. There is a pressure on student to have one, especially in primary school coz if they want to get to an elite high school, they need to have the best grades possible.
Distinguished students receive their certificates in the assembly hall during the end of school year ceremony. Parents boast of the stripe when discussing their kids` achievements. It is also a good reason for a selfie or another Facebook photo.
Certain scientist, a professor, provoked a hot discussion after he showed his primary school certificate with quite unexceptional grades - mostly Ds and Cs.
Under the photo he appealed to parents and teachers not to glorify the stripe coz it means nothing for one`s future career. He was a mediocre student as a young boy, yet became a professor.
I had a stripe only once - at the end of primary school - I had got down to work coz I wanted to go to an elite school later on. But nobody took a photo of me.
