Now that spring is truly here, do you think it might be possible to put a temporary end to the snowflakes that continue to fall on the forum? They can be welcomed back in the late fall...but right now we need some signs of spring to give us all hope...  |

It is still rather cold in the Netherlands as if winter is still there. We have many sayings about months in the Netherlands.
We left March behind us, here a few funny sayings about March:
- March winds and April showers
Bring forth May flowers.
- As it rains in March so it rains in June.
- As much fog as there is in March, there will be just as many thunderstorms in the summer.
- As much fog as there is in March, as much rain there will be after Easter.
- If there is a northern wind on the day of spring (March 20), it will continue for seven more weeks.
- Even if there is spring weather on March 25, there often will be a cold spell after.
- If it thunders in the dry wood, the whole summer will be cold.
- If it is clear on St. Joseph day (March 19), one can expect a good year.
- If March is mild, April will be cold.
- When it thunders in March, in May snow will cover the earth.
- If March gives April weather, April will have March weather.
- When March and April are a let-down, May does it for both.
- When the crocuses flower early, they will fight the cold.
- When the trees flower twice in a row, the winter will stretch until May.
- If the spiders are diligently weaving outside, we will have good weather.
- A dry March and a wet May
Fill barns and bays with corn and hay.
- March is stirring its tail (meaning it can be mild weather or cold winter like weather)
And now April. 1 April is always April fools day in the Netherlands. People have become very creative and funny to fool colleagues and friends.
- He is playing an April Fool’s joke on her
- She falls for it
- He calls: “April Fool!”
- First of April, frog in your bottom! (Een april, kikker in je bil)
- April does as it likes (April doet wat ie wil) ( the month is unpredictable in the Dutch sea climate. it can go all directions. Real spring, a tail of nasty winter, an autumn storm without the coloured yellow, orange, red, brown and black leaves in the trees and on the ground, or it can be suddenly summerly hot or dreadful rainy like the UK😉😁)
- If April is clear and dry, May will be wilder. (April klaar en rein, mei zal des te wilder zijn.)
- A dry April is followed by a wet summer. ( Op een droge april, een natte zomer volgen wil.
- If the beetles come up in April, there will be cold in May. ( Als in April de kevers ontstaan, dan zal mei van de kou vergaan.)
- A northern wind in April and May, makes August and September happy. (Noorden wind in april en mei, maakt augustus en september blij.)
And especially for Jeanne, who longs for the Spring, here a few translated Dutch proverbs:
- One swallow does not make a spring. (Een zwaluw maakt de lente niet.)
- Having grass in the knees. (Meaning: Suffering from spring fatigue.) ( Het gras in de knieen hebben.)
- A new spring, a new sound. (Een nieuwe lente, een nieuw geluid.)

Pieter, These are wonderful! I enjoy learning what sayings different cultures have about the natural world. We have a couple I can think of: March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. April showers bring may flowers. That's about all I can think of...a pretty poor showing compared to our friends in the Netherlands! p.s. I have heard the one about one swallow not making a spring... |

Dutch sayings that are very funny translated into English! Irritation of lady who waits for a typical Dutch New Years eve delicatesse is impatient, because she has to wait for to long. The row has no progress in getting smaller. Dutch: "Die oiliebollen liggen daar maar. Het schiet voor geen meter op!" Dutch: "Ik heb een jetleg van hier tot Tokyo, niet meer normaal meer man." Some Dutch proverbs become vulgar if you translate them. In Dutch: "Wat een hondeweer. Ja, het regent pijpenstelen." (In Dutch it spounds totally innocent, in English translation it has the sexual connotation, what makes it funny) Translated in the original Dutch: "Houdt het nou nooit op met regenen? Ja, ik ben er mooi klaar mee."

With all this humor being shared, I thought I'd share these reflections a friend sent me on the current stay-at-home way of life that many people are experiencing now. I imagine most of these apply to places other than just the U.S.:
Half of us are going to come out of this quarantine as amazing cooks. The other half will come out with a drinking problem.

So, I guess I was asking a bit prematurely when I requested Bonobo to take the floating snowflakes off the forum... That was back on April 5th. Today is May 9th and there are snowflakes in the air where I live in northeastern U.S.! The view I see from my window looks very similar to the view I see on the forum!  |

That seems fine at the start of winter, but still there in May? They need to just dis-appear on their own! I am glad to see they are gone. It's very hot and humid here today. |
