At first glance, Tykocin may seem like a sleepy village. In the past, however, it was a famous city where kings and nobles used to visit. This is confirmed by beautiful monuments and a wonderful atmosphere. Tykocin is located near Białystok, on a small hill in the Biebrza Valley, on the Narew River. For such a small town, the number of monuments and tourist attractions is impressive.
The largest free space in the city is the square of Hetman Stefan Czarniecki. In the middle of it there is a sandstone monument to Czarniecki, holding the hetman's mace in his hand. It is an old monument, built in 1763. Interestingly, the monument is the second oldest secular monument in Poland, after the Sigismund's Column in Warsaw.
The castle - which dates back to the 15th century - is only a reconstruction. It is built of red brick, on a square plan, with four towers on the sides. As the current owners of the castle inform, it was reconstructed with great care, based on historical and archaeological sources.
Tourists, also from Israel, are attracted by many remnants of the rich Jewish culture. The Great Tykocin Synagogue is the second largest synagogue in Poland. Currently, it houses the Museum of Jewish Culture. The bimah (the place where the Torah is read), based on four pillars topped with a canopy, and wall paintings with ornaments in the shape of plants and animals, are particularly impressive.
