We have guest, my cousin, and her seven year old son, coming to stay with us, the last of July for three weeks, and I ask for your help. Our home is around a hour drive from Chicago, and we want to make sure their visit is great for them. What can I do and take them to, to make sure their visit is great? Are there any foods I may want to have on hand for them? What kind of meals do you think would be best for them? What things, in food, do you think they would enjoy, that they don't have at home? We have been to Poland a few times, but would love some help from all of you. I would love the views of someone in Poland, as what they would like to do and see, and eat. Please, if you can, help me make this visit great, they did for us, on our last visit to Poland. Thank you all, for the help, I know you all will be.

Mike, How nice to have your family come for a visit! I cannot address the issue of Polish preferences, but as the parent of a 7 year old boy I do have some experience in that area. Some activities I would suggest: Museum visit (especially science or history or any kind of transportation) Zoo Water park and/or local swimming pool Baseball game Amusement park Mini golf Nature hike You have access to many wonderful things in Chicago, but remember that you don't need to entertain them 24/7. There is nothing more exhausting than an overly busy vacation. Hopefully your cousin and her son will be comfortable discussing their preferences with you. If you have a playground, park, or walking path near your home that can provide an opportunity for some daily exercise or a peaceful walk. Seven year olds usually have a lot of energy! Also, you may want to have some games/toys on hand for him to play with (maybe you could borrow some from your grandchildren)? Some of my kids' favorite summer activities are: riding bikes and scooters, playing catch, playing frisbee, blowing bubbles, running through the sprinkler, catching bugs, and collecting rocks. They also really enjoy cooking and baking (and of course the eating)! ;D

Then I would like to eat some special sea food which I have never eaten so far. It can be sea urchins or a whale. Then I would like to go to the Blue Oyster Club to see the fascinating dances. As for my kids, they would certainly like to visit the zoo to see Big Foot , go the the Museum, preferably of Natural History, where they keep the pharaoh`s magic stone which brings everything to life at night. Amusement park would be great, and aqua park too. All these would be also great. A little of something every day. However, you forgot to add playing soccer and flying a kite.

Thank you both, when I ask them, they say, just whatever we want, and I know, along with the Zoo's there must be other things they want. They may tell us more when they get here.

They may tell us more when they get here. It might be helpful to have a guidebook (with photos) for Chicago for them to look through to enable them to choose some things that look interesting. A map of your area would also be nice to have. I forgot to mention that they may enjoy going to the Polish grocery store with you (I think you referenced one in Chicago in another thread). It would be a great way for them to teach you more about Polish foods, and maybe they would enjoy preparing some Polish dishes with you. Then maybe you can share the recipes with us! ;D ;D ;D

Bobacks in Chicago will have it, and everything more. It is near Midway Airport, on Archer.

Do the young people of Poland understand American baseball, and do they like it? I was thinking of taken our guest to a game. What do you think?

Mike, when I was in NYC in 1990, the college organized a trip to a baseball match. I didn`t understand it, but even if somebody had explained the rules to me, I think I would still consider this game boring. Sorry... I think it might be a better idea to take them to a basketball match. This sport is popular in Poland and the sight of gigantic black players jumping over the basket will be fascinating for those kids. You can believe me on that ;D

Mike, Shedd Field Museum - dinos are a big hit with kids. Sears or Hanc*ck towers definitely a stroll down the downtown parks and beach. a drive down the mile is a must for any visitor as well as a walk down Whacker next to the river. anything to do with Injuns would also be a hit as kids all over the world play cowboys and indians. i'd go to the Jackowo (Milwaukee and Belmont) instead of Bobek's on Archer as there are many stores and so your selection is unlimited besides the area is packed with Poles. churches, restuarants etc... Yes to cow tongues or any other thing you can think of. They have everything there. EVERYTHING. You may also want to look into the Polish museum there as that may be interesting. It's been decades since i have visited it myself. Milwaukee Ave. and I94. You may also want to take them to the Indiana Dunes lakeshore. They'll feel at home there as the water is about the temp of the Baltic and everybody on the beach speaks Polish anyway. lol Notre Dame U. may be worth a look into too. Beautiful campus. the rest kind of depends on your family's interests. no to baseball. it is boring and slow and the 7y/o will go bonkers but Chicago Fire game may be in order. food: it all depends on their tastes.. they have polish food all the time so i'd guess they may want to try something new. they definitely need to try a fair tenderloin and deep fried twinky. lol they also need to try root beer and cream soda as those are uniquely american. sea urchin can be had at a suchi place but it has a very distinctive taste and it is not cheap. it is not for everybody. i think you may also want to take them to a county fair and maybe take a day to spend in the Amish country. 7y/o boy will need a soccer ball, for sure. if you happen to come my way, let me know and we'll go do something here in town. one of the best children's museums is here, near downtown. Indy zoo is cool although a bit small; i've never been to the one in Chitown. how far do you want to travel with them? if i can think of anything else, i will post.

Mike, I think that if someone is visiting a foreign country, they want to experience what is unique to that country, not what they are familiar with at home. I'd stick with strictly American things, they can go to the Polish stores, etc. at home!
