UPDATE 1 - Following one person being shot dead and another badly injured after a knife and gun attack at the local Law and Justice (PiS) HQ in Lodz, central Poland this morning, Jaroslaw Kaczynski has blamed the “atmosphere of hate” against his party for the incident.

“Sixty two year-old, Marek Rosiak, an assistant of MEP Janusz Wojciechowski, was shot and a 39-year-old man, MP Jaroslaw Jagiello’s assistant, was stabbed. The perpetrator carried a knife and an air gun,” said Magdalena Zielinska from Lodz Police Headquarters.

Police have detained Ryszard L., a 62-year old resident of the southern city of Czestochowa who will face murder charges. Police say the man has a criminal record.

The injured person, the victim of the stabbing, has been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

“Kill Kaczynski”

“I was in my room when suddenly a man burst into the office and fired six to eight shots screaming: “Kill Kaczynski!”,” an employee at the party HQ told reporters.

Before the attack the man was seen walking agitatedly around a nearby park screaming anti-Law and Justice slogans, said witnesses.

At a press conference soon after the attack, Law and Justice leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski blamed a hate campaign by the government and media against his party.

“The attack results from a hatred campaign which was launched against the Law and Justice party,” said Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

“Every word that is a continuation of this hatred campaign against Law and Justice will be treated as a call to murder,” he claimed.

In Kaczynski’s opinion the hatred intensified after the Smolensk air disaster in April when people who prayed at the cross situated outside of the Presidential Palace were physically abused.

The party leader added that the government is responsible for the safety of Law and Justice politicians and party supporters.

Boiling point

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said later in the afternoon that the tragedy at the Law and Justice HQ should not be used to poison the political atmosphere in Poland still further.

“This is a moment to restore a normal situation in the country instead of heating up disputes to the boiling point. This tragic death should not result in the Polish political stage becoming a scene for politicians panting with hatred.”

Donald Tusk called for peace and hopes that Poles will finally learn how to control themselves.

“It’s a tragedy that we all are experiencing,” he said.

Head of the Law and Justice parliamentary club Mariusz Blaszczak said that the party will request an emergency meeting of the parliamentary committees on justice and human rights and special services in relation to the attack on the Law and Justice office.

Yes Kaczynski unleashed them. But Tusk has in cold blood used those unleashed forces for his own benefit. They have jointly ruined a chance for absolutely great government of PO-PiS, followed by a super reforms fast track. Instead we are deep into petty quarels and the reforms? They are of happening but slooooowly (no sensible opposition to make the gov act!) and as a secondary interest of politicians. It is a shame real shame.

During today’s funeral mass of the Law and Justice political assistant who was murdered in Lodz last Tuesday, party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski said that Marek Rosiak sacrificed his life for him.

“Marek Rosiak died for me, he died so that I could continue my work and serve the country the best I can,” the Law and Justice leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski said during the funeral ceremony in Lodz Cathedral.

“Marek died because hatred was directed towards one political party and towards its leader,” Kaczynski added solemnly.

“This death is a serious and desperate warning for politicians and the media in Poland. Hatred wakes demons and it can turn into a ruthless executioner,” said Bishop Adam Lepa during the requiem mass.

During his sermon, the bishop called for radical changes in Polish politics. “A political war in Poland is devastating and it discredits the country on the international stage,” said Bishop Lepa.

“It is not a coincidence that Marek Rosiak was murdered on 19th October, the same day as priest Jerzy Popieluszko [Solidarity chaplain],” continued the Bishop, hinting at Popieluszko being a victim of the communist regime who sacrificed his life for a free and democratic Poland.

During the mass President Bronislaw Komorowski posthumously awarded Marek Rosiak with the Order of Polonia Restituta. Apart from the President and the Law and Justice leader, a huge number of prominent politicians from different parties, MPs, senators and residents of Lodz participated in the mass.

The so-called “Defenders of the Cross,” a social group in favour of restoring the cross in memory of the late president Lech Kaczynski in front of the Presidential Palace, also gathered outside the Cathedral.

“We barely recovered from one tragedy and we already have another one,” said one of the Defenders.

After the ceremony the funeral procession marched through the streets of Lodz, passing the Law and Justice office where Rosiak was killed, and stopped at the Old Cemetery, where the Law and Justice political assistant was buried.

Marek Rosiak was shot dead by Ryszard C., a taxi driver who burst into the parliamentary office wielding a gun and knife screaming “Kill Kaczynski”, referring to the leader of the party. After shooting Rosiak the man stabbed another worker before being accosted by police.

Ryszard C., the taxi driver who shot dead a political assistant and stabbed another at the Law and Justice party headquarters in Lodz last week, plotted the crime for months, claim press reports.

After examining Ryszard C.’s laptop and analyzing key words that he typed into search engines, police have managed to establish that the 62-year-old killer collected data on politicians from the four largest political parties and searched the web for weapons and bomb construction manuals.

Ryszard C. followed online the activities of President Bronislaw Komorowski, leader of the Democratic Left Alliance Grzegorz Napieralski and Law and Justice leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

“Before Kaczynski’s presidential election campaign rally in Warsaw [in the summer] Ryszard C. downloaded a map of the square where it was held,” a police officer who analyzed the killer’s laptop revealed to the Gazeta Wyborcza daily.

In total, an obsessed Ryszard C. gathered information about twenty politicians and looked for weapons, paralyzing gas and tasers on the web.

“He also visited web sites with instructions on how to make a home-made bomb,” adds the policeman.

Ryszard C. was also interested in disguise – he looked for a fake beard, moustache and ways to cover up vehicle number plates.

The man also checked Polish Airlines LOT web site, which suggests that he might have planned to escape Poland after the crime.

On 19 October, Ryszard C. entered the Law and Justice headquarters in the central city of Lodz and shot Marek Rosiak, MEP Janusz Wojciechowski’s assistant and injured Pawel Kowalski, who was hospitalized.

Media barred from 'political' murder trial

The trial of Ryszard Cyba, accused of murdering a conservative Law and Justice party (PiS) political researcher last year, will be closed to the media.

The testomony "could promote violence," the judge said.

Nevertheless, members of the press were allowed to witness the charges being read against the defendant as the trial began in Lodz, central Poland, on Thursday morning.

Although the press was not allowed to hear his plea, the defendant has admitted from the moment of his arrest that he was responsible for the murder on 19 October 2010.

On that morning, the now 63-year-old former taxi driver entered the Lodz office of Janusz Wojciechowski, a member of the European Parliament (MEP).

The MEP was not present, but the assailant gunned down his assistant, Marek Rosiak, and stabbed another Law and Justice employee, Pawel Kowalski, who survived the attack.

Judge Grzzgorz Wasinski declared that defendant's testimony could amount to “the politically motivated promotion of unacceptable attitudes, which might be considered as inciting the public to commit a crime.”

Although in the wake of the attack, the accused declared that he had wanted to kill “any politician, from whatever party, so that they wouldn’t feel so sure of themselves,” according to witnesses at the crime scene he shouted out that he wanted to “shoot PiS members.”

The discovery that Ryszard Cyba had once been a member of the governing Civic Platform (PO) party sparked a bitter war of words following the crime, with Law and Justice leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski claiming that Civic Platform's alleged “campaign of hate” against his party was responsible for the tragedy.

Yesterday, in another incident that prompted debate about political hatred, a drunken man urinated in the WWII Warsaw Rising Museum - reportedly because he "hated" the late president Lech Kaczynski.

Kaczynski, co-founder of the Law and Justice party, had been instrumental in creating the museum, which pays tribute to Polish insurgents against the Nazi occupiers.
