Heavy snow fall has caused chaos in many areas of the country with roads grinding to a halt with air traffic at Warsaw’s Chopin airport at a standstill for over an hour on Monday.
Overnight temperatures plunged to minus 9 in Warsaw. Forecasters expect snow fall to continue in the capital throughout Tuesday.
Three people died of hyperthermia in the north east of the country in Monday. A 35 year old and a 53 year old, both homeless men, were found dead in the Warmia and Mazury province as temperatures plummeted. A 75 year old woman also became a casualty of the earlier than expected winter weather.
Road traffic ground to a halt in many areas of Poland as heavy snow fall continued throughout the country on Monday and Tuesday morning with conditions particularly bad in the Bieszczady and Beskid mountains.
Five people were injured in traffic accidents in the north eastern Warmia and Mazury province with police recoding up to 35 separate collisions.
Throughout Podkarpackie region in the south temperatures remain around zero with a mixture of snow and rainfall making road surfaces treacherous.
Heavy snow fall was also recorded in Silesia, Opole, Lodz, Świętokrzyskie, Mazowieckie and Wielkopolska.
It was reported yesterday evening that travelling by car from Wilanow on the outskirts of Warsaw to the centre of the capital took up to two and a half hours as traffic became gridlocked.
Aircraft grounded
The onslaught of winter took its toll on air traffic in the capital yesterday.
Warsaw’s Chopin airport, closed for air traffic due to adverse weather conditions, was reopened after an hour as soon as the runway was cleared of snow by the airport crews. Heavy snowfall caused regular delays in traffic from 2 pm CET.
The disruptions are also attributed to the necessity of removing ice from the surface of the aircrafts. More information can be found at the website of the Chopin airport.
Meanwhile, the airport in Wrocław, south western Poland, also registered several delays, while facilities in Kraków, Gdańsk and Łódź did not experienced any problems
