I'm still here. This is one of the more upbeat and constructive forums around. I guess I just haven't had much to say lately, and have been quite busy, but I haven't turned my back.
As to what I've been doing...I've been gratified lately by actually fixing a couple things wrong with a neighbor's car, and then with my wife's car. Been reaping some carrots and tomatoes out of my garden. Been enjoying my family. Trying to finish a history book on Poland. And basically, just been trying to learn some more stuff, so I can make a little more money. That's life--always striving, learning, and hoping.
Wishing you all the best,
Paulo

Here in New England we have had so much rain and cool temperatures that our tomatoes are still a long way off! What book on Polish history are you reading?

Dear Jeanne,
Here is the book I'm trying to finish: "Studies in Polish Life and History," by a resident of the United Kingdom, A.E. Tennant. Copyright 1924. I've read maybe 4 or 5 books on Poland the last several months. One of the better ones was called, "The Long Walk." It was about a guy who was sent to Siberia during WWII. He escaped with a few other prisoners, and WALKED a few thousand miles to freedom. They lost a couple people on the journey.
As to the tomatoes, I'm growing Sweet C 100's, a type of cherry tomato. This might be why they are growing fast, as compared to standard size tomatoes. I am also experimenting with growing potatoes, UPWARD. That is, I have a raised and boxed in bed about 3-1/2 feet square x 2 feet deep. (I know they grow a lot of potatoes in parts of New England.)
I hate to see winter come, where one can't do much. I hope to try to grow something, but it will probably be futile, unless I can figure out how to heat the environment. And with a limited budget and space, that may be unlikely. But I still may try something, just to keep from going stir-crazy.
May your garden grow. Paul

I also love to read Polish history books and also historical fiction about Poland. Another book you might enjoy, if you haven't already read it, is The Thousand Hour Day by WS Kuniczak about the beginning invasion of Poland by the Germans in 1939. I just don't enjoy cherry tomatoes for some reason...I love the big juicy ones! My husband is the gardener in the family and he's got a bunch of potatoes out in the garden. Love 'em. Luckily I have an enclosed but unheated porch. I was able to keep parsley growing out there all last winter. How about starting your plants indoors from seed for next summer? My husband does that. Even with limited space you should be able to start a few things to keep yourself occupied.

As to what I've been doing...I've been gratified lately by actually fixing a couple things wrong with a neighbor's car, and then with my wife's car. Are you so familiar with cars or are they such simple constructions, easy to handle, like this one which I pulled an engine out in 1980s to repair the gear box.

Breading that is, sorry. Like in bread crumbs. With a egg wash, try them you will love them. This is a big thing in the south, here.

Mike, I have been wondering the same thing. For myself, I scan and see what people have been saying. If it's not about power-seizing here in America, I'm not interested. That has been on my mind that much! What does anything else matter, if you are faced with people trying to establish one-party rule here?

P.S. Where were you anyway? By a route obscure and lonely, Haunted by ill angels only, Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT, On a black throne reigns upright, I have reached these lands but newly From an ultimate dim Thule- From a wild clime that lieth, sublime, Out of SPACE- out of TIME.
Bottomless vales and boundless floods, And chasms, and caves, and Titan woods, With forms that no man can discover For the tears that drip all over; Mountains toppling evermore Into seas without a shore; Seas that restlessly aspire, Surging, unto skies of fire; Lakes that endlessly outspread Their lone waters- lone and dead,- Their still waters- still and chilly With the snows of the lolling lily.
By the lakes that thus outspread Their lone waters, lone and dead,- Their sad waters, sad and chilly With the snows of the lolling lily,- By the mountains- near the river Murmuring lowly, murmuring ever,- By the grey woods,- by the swamp Where the toad and the newt encamp- By the dismal tarns and pools Where dwell the Ghouls,- By each spot the most unholy- In each nook most melancholy- There the traveller meets aghast Sheeted Memories of the Past- Shrouded forms that start and sigh As they pass the wanderer by- White-robed forms of friends long given, In agony, to the Earth- and Heaven.
For the heart whose woes are legion 'Tis a peaceful, soothing region- For the spirit that walks in shadow 'Tis- oh, 'tis an Eldorado! But the traveller, travelling through it, May not- dare not openly view it! Never its mysteries are exposed To the weak human eye unclosed; So wills its King, who hath forbid The uplifting of the fringed lid; And thus the sad Soul that here passes Beholds it but through darkened glasses.
By a route obscure and lonely, Haunted by ill angels only, Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT, On a black throne reigns upright, I have wandered home but newly From this ultimate dim Thule.
