Today we celebrate our national holiday, Day of Independence, November 11th. It is a symbolic date of Poland regaining independence in 1918. According to the polls, Poles do treat this day as the most important historic date. And here is the first page of Rzeczypospolita daily with pictures of five Poles who helped us stick to the idea of indepence the most, according to a survey. The Pope, John Paul II, Józef Piłsudski, Lech Wałęsa, Stefan Wyszyński, Ignacy Paderewski

We went to the Cathedral at the Wawel Castle, saw Polish ulans parading in streets, later we visited the Church on the Rock to see the crypt with tombs of famous Poles, and finally went to Kosciuszko Mound. Standard things. I suppose Tufta went to the parade in Warsaw. Now he is enjoying the ball party thrown by the President of Poland. There are 800 guests, including German Chancellor Merkel. And Tufta, of course. Standard things.

The celebration of Independence Day in Poland is closely connected with the elements. November is always cold, seldom sunny, sometimes snowy. It is clear that Poles didn`t develop the tradition of barbecue as in other countries (like US) whose national holiday falls on summer days. When the weather is good, there are official marches, speeches, reconstruction groups, cannon salutes, Polish army units parades, meeting President, free admission to certain facilities (Wawel Cathedral) etc etc. Unfortunately, on the day extremists of various sorts clash with the police and each other what spoils the festivity. polandsite.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=polishevents&thread=2239&page=1
