Cardinal and dog triumph in Polish Press Photo Awards 08.03.2012 13:04 A photograph of Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz doffing his skullcap to a nervous dog has won first prize in the Polish Press Photo of the Year contest.
The image was taken by Marek Lasyk from the Reporter Agency on 9 October, 2011, the day of Poland's general elections.
Cardinal Dziwisz, who was secretary to the late Pope John Paul II, and is currently Archbishop of Krakow, was returning from a polling station when the photograph was taken.
“On that day the cardinal was surrounded by journalists and photographers,” Lasyk revealed in an interview with the Polish Press Agency.
“I didn't want them in the frame, so I overtook the cardinal,” he said.
“When I saw the dog, I decided to wait and integrate it into the photograph."
The jury itself immediately warmed to the picture.
“Everyone was agreed that it deserved an award,” said Wojciech Druszcz, who presided over the jury.
“It has everything you need in a press photograph,” he said, “and the photo reporter revealed that he has a sense of humour, which is also important.”
Poland's Press Photo of the Year (2011) was organised by the Press Photography Club, itself affiliated to the Association of Polish Journalists (SDP)
