Where those meetings with nasty dictators necessary? I don't know if the visits were necessary, but I feel the Pope must have had good reasons for them. Some of these reasons may have been to witness to his beliefs, to show he was not intimidated by them because he had the truth to back him up, just to show the Christian idea of respecting the dignity of all humans regardless of who they are, or to build some kind of relationship with these dictators who had numerous members of his flock under their power.

Yes. Now I have just remembered that the Pope is the head of the Vatican State and he has to meet his counterparts, even if they are dubious guys.
