Jelenia Góra wasn`t damaged during WW2. But in 1971, Polish communist authorities decided to pull down decrepit historical buildings in the centre instead of renovating them. Today, the city is only a shadow of what it looked like before the war.
Why did communist authorities pull down old houses which weren`t destroyed during WW2 and built new ones, leaving a lot of empty spaces? They wanted to revitilise the Old Town which was in a very bad condition due to lack of maintanance for many years. However, crazy communist methods, flunked designs, lack of funds and poor quality of works turned the outcome into a parody.
