IKEA, the Swedish furniture giant has been given the go-ahead to build a new factory near Bielsk Podlaski, north-east Poland.
The investment, worth 340 million euro, will create 2,000 jobs in the region.
Deputy head of Bielsk district, Piotr Bozko told the press, Tuesday, that planning permission for the factory has been rubberstamped and theoretically it construction could start with immediate effect.
Bozko underlined that the district council had been waiting three years for the investment to be given the go-ahead. “From the outset we thought it impossible [for the factory to be built here],” the councillor said, adding that “there were seventeen other possible sites for the investment, not just in Poland.”
The end of Poland ‘B’?
Mr. Bozko believes that the Swedish investment will improve the quality of life for thousands in the region.
“Unfortunately we are still a kind of Poland ‘B’ in terms of investment” Bozko said, referring to the commonly acknowledged two-tier development of the country. The councillor believes that the IKEA factory will place Bielsk Podlaski on the investment map of Poland.
IKEA spokeswoman Aleksandra Sikora told media that the Swedish giant is aware of the decision, yet refused to comment until the relevant documents were received by IKEA HQ.
Over 2,000 jobs to be created
The granted planning permission is for IKEA’s first stage of investment in Bielsk Podlaski. Within two years the factory is to start productino of ultra-thin hardboard sheets (HDF), creating 250 jobs.
Further stages of development foresee the creation of another factory in the same vicinity that will produce furniture from HDF, as well as a chair production line, giving a total of 2,000 jobs.
