Central and eastern European leaders have defied attempts by Brussels and Berlin to impose refugee quotas ahead of two days of high-stakes summits in Brussels to try to decide on what already looks like a vain attempt to limit the flow of refugees and migrants into Europe.
After months of being consistently behind the curve in grappling with the EU’s huge migration crisis, interior ministers will meet on Tuesday to focus on the highly divisive issue of mandatory quotas to share refugees across the union. There will then be an emergency summit of leaders on Wednesday. ....................................................... www.theguardian.com/world/2015/sep/21/eastern-european-leaders-defy-eu-effort-to-set-refugee-quotasAnti-immigrant rally in Slovakia. Policemen who secured it took off their helmets and joined in to demonstrate against, too.

Dear Bonobo,
In these countries nationalism, christian identity, conservatism and slavic, Hungarian and Romanian identities go hand in hand. Mind you that the Central- and Eastern-Europeans have monitored and watched the Western-Euroepan democracies and their struggle with Muslim migrants (gettoisation, segregation, ethnic tensions) and incoming refugees for 25 years now.
It is not fair to say that only the Central and Eastern-European nations are reluctand to take in refugees. How about Greece, Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, France, Belgium and Denmark?
And let's mention the USA, Canada, Australia and Indonesia too.
Cheers, Pieter

Pieter Exactly, Pete, you hit the nail on the head. Besides, Poles are angry at Germany which offers abundant social aid to immigrants. If German welfare wasn`t so generous, less immigrants would take pains to get to Europe, Poles say. And then we wouldn`t have to accept refugees. But Germany need immigrants like evey Western nation cause native Germans don`t want to reproduce.

Dear Bo,
The Poles have a point there. It is true that waves of refugees go to Germany, because Germany is more generous with their abundant social aid to refugees and immigrants. It is true that if the German welfare wasn't so generous, less refugees and immigrants would want to go there. And it's neighbors Poland, Denmark, Belgium, France and the Czech Republic would have less problems with incoming refugees and migrants.
I don't mention Austria, because refugees traveling through Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia and Hungary enter Austria to travel from that country to Germany. Austria has it's refugees and migrants of it's own. Due to EU solidarity and exchange, distribution, shelter and settlement agreements, treaties and legislation Poland and the Netherlands probably will have to shelter some refugees that are in Germany right now!
Cheers, Pieter
