Strikes and demonstrations by fastfood workers who demand 15$ per hour. 25 years ago, as a simple labourer, I got about 7$ per hour in various workshops in New York and 12$ as a waiter. I didn`t think it was so much. I was barely able to save 10,000 after a year. Today I learnt with astonishment that 7$ is the official minimum wage per hour. fightfor15.org/november10/

I believe official U.S. minimum wage is $7.25 per hour; no one can go lower. States can go higher if they wish, and minimum wage in Massachusetts is $9.00. Whoopie...not much better!

9$ is what I get in my Polish state school. How much do Am teachers get on average? Teachers in the US are paid by salary, not hourly, and salaries vary widely since local school districts negotiate contracts with their teachers. In my area of the country, starting salaries for teachers range from high $30,000s to low $40,000s. Teachers then move up the pay scale based on their longevity and the furthering of their education. In my state, and probably many others, teachers have a certain length of time to attain their Master's degrees which are mandatory. Some teachers at the height of the pay scale can make $90,000, but mean salary for established teacher ranges from high $50,000s to low/mid $60,000s. Here are some figures for various states: www.nea.org/home/38465.htm

The minimum wage in the United States has not even pretended to keep up with inflation and a more expensive life. Once upon a time it was actually possible to earn a living and support oneself on the minimum wage, which is why such an amount was set as the minimum wage to begin with.
Since then, however, minimum wage has stopped being the minimum living wage and has since become a way for employers to say, "I would pay you less if I could, but this is least the law says I have to pay you."
The minimum a worker should be paid should be a LIVING wage. It doesn't have to be an amazingly comfortable and luxurious living wage, but a living wage nonetheless - to be able to afford shelter, food, clothing, utilities, all the ESSENTIALS in life. But, unfortunately, the gap between minimum wage and living wage is already so huge and continues to grow even larger.

We would probably have to take into consideration differences between states, Florida is more expensive than Arizona, I suppose. How about country and urban life? Does living cost in rural parts of US differ substantially from the one in cities?
