Christmas is a good time for Polish teachers to get some relief from school duties. Schools break up on 22 December and get back on 2 January. With a good arrangement of weekends, it sometimes turns into 2 week holiday.
I need it desperately as I have been really busy recently. I work in a state high school and at private courses, which means I start on Monday morning and finish on Saturday afternoon. This school year I am teaching 5 state units, 124 students, 34 lessons per week. Each unit is handed an exam after finishing a chapter in the textbook, plus short grammar tests, it means correcting about 5-7 papers monthly. Moreover, the two highest units of senior students have just had the end of their first term, so I was busy with their grades, also behaviour grades as I am a class tutor of one unit. Furthermore, I had to prepare and run a winter mock exam for them, and this year most of my seniors have chosen the advanced level which entails correcting long exam papers with essays (one of two topics I gave them: More and more parents are choosing home schooling for their children. Present pros and cons of such a decision). Additionally, I require all my students to do written tasks like private letters, blog entries or emails (basic level) and articles, formal letters and essays( advanced level) on sheets of paper which I take home and correct.
Sometimes I am so tired I remember things which didn`t happen at all. E.g., two weeks ago I went to the supermarket to reclaim a big packet of sugar which I believed I had left there at the checkout. I took the receipt and showed it to the lady, but it turned out I hadn`t bought any sugar. I was so embarrassed.
I stopped giving lessons to my children on Saturdays and Sundays. When I see their textbooks I feel depressed. I simply can`t stand teaching anymore.
Unfortunately, teaching is my vocation. I am the first one who rushes to the classroom when the bell rings, sometimes I even precede the bell. It is not normal here, as most teachers take their time and stay in the staff room 2-3 minutes after the bell.
Oh my God, people will do anything for money. Yes, I get pots of dough for my work. But I need it to invest into our farm which became my newest hobby.
I hope I will recharge my batteries. I must, otherwise I will face a complete burnout.
Christmas, winter holidays, Easter, summer holidays are fantastic relief times. Thanks God.
