German announcements in occupied Poland

From 1939 to 1945 Germans published many announcements for citizens of occupied Poland, Jews and Poles.

Here are some from Krakow:

Chronologically from September 1939, all transgressions severely punished

Jewish public premises must be marked with the Star of David


All radios will be confiscated, listening to foreign stations is crime


11 November, (Independence Day) is a working day


Hebrew is prohibited as official language


Jews must use special compartments in trams


Jews mustn`t walk in Market Square, Planty Park


Compulsory examination of young Poles for work purposes


Poles may attend the circus performance, Jews can`t.


Curfew: Poles 11pm-4am, Jews - 9pm - 5am.


Jews without job documents will be deported from Krakow


Milk rationing: Polish children but only under 3: 1/5 litre a day. Older Polish and all Jewish - nothing.


Military, school, uni uniforms and their parts are forbidden


Monthly energy limits in households cannot be exceeded


Non-German citizens mustn`t settle in Krakow


Compulsory confiscation of skis, poles and skiing boots


Identity cards for all residents over 15


Bikes are allowed only for important reasons, e.g., work


Dog owners must inform authorities about certain breeds

The German occupation of Poland was one of the most brutal in whole Europe. Statistically, Poland suffered the highest casualties of all belligerent countries. 220 dead per 1000 citizens.
Did Germans ever pay for that? No.

They didn`t pay because the communist government rejected such option. They didn`t want to bother East Germany which claimed it couldn`t be blamed for the war.

Individual survivors got some money for the time they had spent in concentration camps or slave work.

But Germany supported Poland`s access to EU and NATO and invested a lot of money here, so they sort of paid their dues.

It is mean matter is finished? And they dont pay more? In last year Greece want Germany pay for war, lot of money.

Don`t be silly. We are talking about hundred of billions of dollars of war reparations. German investment and backing Poland in the EU has been intended to make more profit, nothing else. No sense making a big halo about it.



Germany owes Poland for material and human losses.

Material losses:

Railway - 84 percent,
power - 65 percent,
post and telecommunications - 62 percent,
education - 60 percent,
mining - 42 percent.


39 percent. physicians,
33 percent. teachers in vocational schools, secondary and primary,
30 percent. scientists and university professors,
28 percent. priests,
26 percent. lawyers.


Warsaw War Losses-
85% of a city of Warsaw ,
90% of Warsaw industry,
72% of Warsaw housing,
90% of Warsaw national treasures and monuments,
700 000 deaths of inhabitants of Warsaw just one city (representing a total loss of the war in the people of Great Britain and the United States counted together ).
The total destruction and theft of the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943, 95% of the losses. ,
The city of Jasło destructed in totall(96%),
and the destruction of the port of Gdynia.

Plunder of cultural property - a total of 43%.
Destroyed 25 museums,
35 theaters,
665 cinemas,

Losses in the Polish school - destroyed 17 universities, 271 schools, 4,880 primary schools, and 768 other schools.

In addition, the destruction of research institutes, scientific societies, and foundations of different types.

Loss of health care (hospital property, infrastructure, buildings) - 55% of the state before 1939.

352 hospitals were destroyed,
29 tuberculosis sanatoriums,
24 medicinal plants wafer,
47 social insurance company facilities,
778 health centers and clinics,
1,450 surgeries and dental [3].

The losses in the industry (both intentional destruction and looting of machinery and equipment) -
64.5% of the chemical industry,
printing 64.3%,
59.7% electrical,
clothing 55.4%,
53.1% food,
48% metal.

2. Germany was punished for starting the war by the loss of their Eastern territory to Poland. East Prussia was erased completely, magnificent city of Konigsberg ceased to exist and was replaced by ugly Soviet settlement called Kaliningrad. See the thread about Gdańsk and Kaliningrad. Poland gained 500 kilometers of coastline at the cost of Germany and a few major cities.

Pragmatic and realistic reply Bo. It is the truth. The Germans have paid with the loss of territory and millions of Germans were forced to leave Poland and Czechoslovakia. They are called Heimatvertriebenen. My ex-girlfriends grandparents (she is half German and Half Dutch) were Heimatvertriebenen from Stettin, today Szczecin. They lost their home, property and everything. They were no nazi's, just ordinary Germans. They built a new life in the North of West-Germany. The 'German' mother of my girlfriend is their daughter. I felt somewhat uncomfortable when the subject was the theme of discussion. I felt I had to defend the Polish side. I could talk openly about it. They felt no hatred for the Poles. Wars create such circumstances. They knew that the German government and army of that era (The Third Reich) caused their expulsion. They were glad that they could stay out of the hands of the Russians. They escaped from the terror of the Red army against the German population. The rapes of German women, and the murder of German citizens by the Sovjets who fought their way to Berlin.

If we adopt this way of thinking, we must agree that Poles were punished too, right? Our country lost territories called Kresy, Edge Lands, on behalf of the USSR.

Is it not more justified to say that German lands were a compensation for the Polish lands forfeited in the East?

Logical assumption which follows is that Germans still owe Poland reparations for war destruction and crimes.

I don`t think they will pay one eurocent in reparations.

Besides, be careful, because it may go two ways. Today you force someone to pay, and tomorrow someone else will do the same to you.
