A driver of Audi 6 was carrying 1000 packets of illegally imported cigarettes. The police tried to stop him but he avoided a few blockades, demolishing fences and crashing into cars. Eventually, he drove onto railway tracks. Unfortunately, his car wasn`t an engine and broke down after a few hundred metres. The driver was fined 2000 zlotys for escaping, ignoring stop signs, colliding and creating a hazard for track vehicles. Lost his license for a year and still faces a suit for smuggling cigarettes. www.tvn24.pl/-1,1583995,0,1,uciekal-po-torach-trafil-wprost-w-objecia-policji,wiadomosc.html

Unusual theft at the military training area - 4 old tanks were stolen. The police retrieved them quickly. It is difficult to hide a tank.... www.tvn24.pl/-1,1585833,0,1,zniknely-czolgi-z-poligonu,wiadomosc.html Tank thieves arrested in south east Poland thenews.pl 12.02.2009
Two men aged 25 and 35, suspected of having stolen tanks from a military training ground are being detained by police in £ukow, Lublin province.
One of the tanks was found by the police officers near Radzyñ Podlaski, while it was being carried by a car transporter. The other three were being kept in private property in Lublin, next to a metal scrap yard. The thieves were trying to sell the WW II dated vehicles, believe police.
But how was it possible that four large tanks went missing? "The military training ground is a big area and it's not monitored," says Anna Smarzak from the Regional Police Headquarters in Lublin.
The tanks were stolen on Tuesday night when about ten men equipped with bulldozers and cranes entered the area.
The tank thieves stole T-34 and T-55 tanks which were used for training. The police established that one of the witnesses saw the tanks leave the ground but they were convinced that this was a part of normal military training.
The tanks are worth an estimated at 60,000 zloty or 13,000 euro.
The police are continuing their investigation.

In 2008, police registered over one million crimes nationally. That figure is about 71,000 less than in 2007, according National Police Headquarters spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski.
"The success of detection and arrests in 2008 was 65.9 percent and was the highest in police history. The previous year was already the fifth one in a row in which police success had decreased, stated Sokolowski.
According to police information, five years ago, there occurred an average of 3,000 criminal arrests daily. In 2008, there were an average of 4,000 criminal arrests made daily nationwide. Every two out of three arrests resulted in a sentence of paying a fine.
In 2008 there were 759 murders, as compared to 848 the year before. Last year saw 124,000 robberies in Poland – 17,500 less than the previous year. In 2008, liquidated 16 amphetamine factories.

In Poland we don`t have such bad. One must be cerefull, of course. I onc lost a mobile in the pub in Krakow, i keep it in my pocket of jacket, put the jacket on chair, go to bar, meet a friend, so we chatted, have beer or two. Come back to chair, no mobile, no studetns identity card. Jacket on the chair still, bkoz it was so old, and no fashionalbe. Now I keep my mobile everywhere to me, always.

Polish prison conditions ranked worst in Europe: German study Poland has been the scene of repeated prison riots in recent times. 2009/02/27
Berlin, Feb 26, IRNA -- Polish prison conditions ranked worst in Europe, according to a study released Thursday by the German University of Greifswald.
Overcrowded prison cells, chronic underfunding, lack of work for prisoners and dismal sanitary conditions highlight the main problems of Poland's prison system, said German criminologist Frieder Duenkel.
Poland has been the scene of repeated prison riots in recent times.
There are some 58,000 convicted people who are still waiting for a free place in jails to begin serving their time, according to Polish media reports.
The survey which compared the prison situation of nine European countries, stressed there was no evidence of massive human rights violations in European countries.

A young thief faces 10 years. He entered a restaurant in Warsaw, went into the bathroom, broke the dispenser and stole a roll of toilet paper. Stopped by security, was arrested for major theft and burglary (into the dispenser which was worth more than 250 zlotys, the sum which is a borderline between a minor and major offence). Some guys should stay away from breaking the law, they are simply too stupid. www.tvnwarszawa.pl/-1,1594409,0,,grozi_mu_10_lat_wiezienia__bo_ukradl_papier_toaletowy,wiadomosc.html Pole faces jail for stealing toilet paper
WARSAW, Poland, April 9 (UPI) -- Polish police arrested a 26-year-old man for stealing a toilet paper roll from a Warsaw restaurant, a crime that could cost him 10 years in jail.
The man, identified only as Edvin L., stole the paper roll worth 66 cents but in taking it he broke the box holding the roll, making the total damage $105, the Polish daily Dziennik said. Police were called by a restaurant manager who spotted the man hiding something under his jacket.
The daily said the man's theft was published on the Warsaw police Web site as one of their successful actions since January, adding his crime could lead to a prison sentence of 10 years.
In response to a Dziennik reporter's query, a woman in the Warsaw police headquarters explained it was a serious crime, which apart from stealing the paper roll, included the breaking of the box containing the roll, the newspaper said.

A man will probably be tried for carrying a red deer in his small car. He says he found a dead deer on the road and put it on the back seat. Then he went to work but after some time the animal started kicking around and alarmed passers-by. www.tvn24.pl/12690,1593272,0,1,wzial-sarne-do-malucha,wiadomosc.html Austrian Times
4/7/09
A driver has been charged with animal cruelty after leaving a live deer on the back seat of his tiny Fiat 126 car while he went to work.
Dariusz Kaminski, 25, told police he'd picked up the deer from a grass verge on his way to work and thought it had been killed crossing the road in Lublin, eastern Poland.
But the deer was just stunned and came to in the parked car where passers-by spotted it after it stood on the car horn.
The driver is now facing five years in prison for the illegal possession of a wild animal.
The deer has been taken to a sanctuary. PS. A comment by a reader: No wonder the man took the deer. Judging by the car, he wanted to cut down his expenses on meat. 6 men got arrested for running illegal production of 97% spirit. 30 tons of alcohol worth 2 million zlotys were found on the premises. They face 10 years. www.tvn24.pl/12690,1594879,0,1,ponad-30-ton-lewego-spirytusu,wiadomosc.html
