The first stage of the reconstruction of the synagogue from Wołpa has just ended. The building is already in a raw state.
The synagogue is being reconstructed on Nadrzeczna Street in Biłgoraj. It will be a part of the City on the Trail of Borderland Cultures. This is a complex of buildings which in its final version will consist of residential apartments and reconstructed pre-war objects of wooden architecture, including a synagogue and an Orthodox Church.
The building of the City on the Trail of the Borderland Cultures started in 2009. This is a project of the Biłgoraj XXI Foundation. Its founder, Tadeusz Kuźmiński did not want to build yet another steel and glass commercial centre or a district of semi-detached houses. The investor’s ambition was to create an original housing estate combining residential, commercial and cultural functions. He decided to create the urban area, the architecture of which would refer to the per-war traditions.
Stylish residential houses and the first commercial facility are already a part of the City on the Trail of the Borderland Cultures. Until the end of the year, the Isaac Bashevis Singer Museum is planned to be organised. The reconstructed 17th century synagogue from Wołpa, commonly regarded one of the most beautiful synagogues of the Second Republic of Poland will be situated in the central part of the estate.
The facility is being built in 1:1 scale on the basis of archival documentation and iconography. The works are being carried out by Apis, a Biłgoraj firm specialising in wooden constructions. Now, the building is in a raw state.
In 2014, the Biłgoraj XXI Foundation was granted 1.7 m zlotys from the Regional Operational Programme of the Lublin Province to build a synagogue and Singer’s house. Additional financial resources are needed to complete the synagogue’s interior. It is going to house the Museum of the Biłgoraj Jews. Tadeusz Kuźmiński hopes the sale of apartments will provide a part of the required funds.

Polychromies for PLN 4 million at the Biłgoraj Synagogue
The Biłgoraj XXI Foundation is seeking funds to add polychromies to the reconstructed synagogue in Wołpa.
The synagogue is being erected in Biłgoraj, in the Town on the Trail of Borderland Cultures. The architecture of this modern estate is supposed to bring to mind pre-war buildings in Eastern Poland’s towns. Apart from residential houses, it will also include a replica of the Wołpa synagogue.
The building is not yet ready. It is already very impressive, but there is still some work to do, including the reconstruction of the polychromy.
Around PLN 4 million will be needed for this purpose. The Biłgoraj XXI Foundation – who created the Town on the Trail of Borderland Cultures – will soon file an application at the province marshal's office for a grant from the European Union’s funds to finance the project.
– We intend to file an application in the programme dedicated to saving national heritage – announces Tadeusz Kuźmiński, the Foundation’s Chairman.
If we receive the funds, next year, we’ll start painting the interior, as well as begin the reconstruction of the bimah and the Torah Ark.
Polychromies will cover an enormous area – a staggering 1,200 square metres!
– We will take into account rules regarding composition and colour set out by old masters, as well as their approach towards ornaments and symbolism – notes Kinga Staroniewska from the Biłgoraj XXI Foundation.
After the work is completed, a Jewish Museum will be established in this building.
