A few years ago I would have got indignant after reading the news that a man demands compensation for the horse confiscated during WW2. polandsite.proboards.com/post/33309Why indignant? I considered it immoral to put forward such claims. Poles didn`t lose only horses during the war, they also lost houses and entire villages and cities, not to mention health and life. Demanding money for a silly horse is pathetic, especially that it was taken for a good cause of national defence. Today I changed my view, especially after politicians, even the ones from old Solidarity which clashed with communists under Wałęsa leadership, demanded high compensation for the health they lost in communist prisons. So, if top politicians get money from the democratic state, why shouldn`t an average man too? That`s how patriotism is gradually devaluated.

Dear Bonobo,
Patriotism loses it's value when the dividing line between good and decent Patriotism and extreme-right Ultra-Nationalism is crossed. Good, excellent Poles, with a leftwing, center left, center right and rightwing background, Roman-Catholics, jews, Calvinists, atheists, secularists and others were 'Good Polish Patriots' in the Polish past. The danger today is that only a good Polish Patriot is the one who is a Ulta-Catholic, the one who is reactionary National Conservative (someone with a National Democratic leaning) or the one who is a Government supporter (meaning a member, voter or follower of Prawo i Sprawiedliwość, Solidarna Polska and Polska Razem).
I agree with you that Polish patriotism is gradually devaluated.
Cheers, Pieter

Cheers, Pieter Actually, I didn`t mean various nationalist scum who deem themselves the greatest patriots and refuse the right to be ones to all other groups, especially ones which disagree with them. I was talking about ordinary people who observe things happening around and draw coclusions, namely, if a rich senator sues the democratic state for years spent in a communist prison 30 years ago and gets gigantic compensation, why should my horsie from 75 years ago be worse?

I agree with you that it is ridiculous that people ask compensation for horses, and the years they spend in prison during communism. You can't blame democratic Poland for that. It is logical that the Polish army confiscated the horse of that man. They needed all the means of transport they could use against that superior enemy.

Were the politicians actually compensated? Or were they just demanding that it be given to them?

Were the politicians actually compensated? Or were they just demanding that it be given to them? Yes, the most known case happened nearly 4 years ago. polandsite.proboards.com/post/26939
