Many places like casltes or palaces have been restored recently, yet still many need deep renovation. Aristocratic families get back their property which communists grabbed after WW2, but they haven`t got enough money to restore them. Sometimes they demand compensation from the state for decades of exploitation. And buildings fall in greater ruin...

Average private owners don`t have money for renovation. They even don`t have money for maintenance unless they become businessmen who open a hotel or conference centre etc. The state isn`t going to pay for it, either.

SO, they must rot and they do all over Europe. Derelict castles, abandoned mansions, ruined palaces for sale - there are hundreds ads on the NEt.

I read once that a desperate owner is ready to sell his ruined castle for 1 euro on condition that a new owner will renovate the site.

A private person owns this ex German palace in Kościelniki but refuses to renovate it so it is slowly crumbling. The state can take it over due to deliberate negligence of historical heritage but it is going to take years.
