Apart from historical centre, there is also postwar architecture. I really am happy and appreciate that housing was built for the homeless after the war, but couldn't they have done it in a more attractive way?? The human soul needs beauty, particularly after suffering the trauma of war...

First, they lacked materials and labour force after the devastating war. In that initial period, any extravagant decoration meant less housing places. Later, when the losses have been made up for, newly born customs were continued because they were simply cheaper.

I'm not talking about anything extravagant...I'm simply talking about maybe different lines in the shape of the buildings,so they don't look so much like boxes. Poland is replete with architecturally beautiful buildings, one would think they could build the new buildings based on that model...where were the creative people? They couldn't all have been lost in the war...those who survived must have been the most strong and clever. ...Talk about falling into a rut...

Yes, changing outlines/shapes a little wouldn`t have cost them so much but would definitely give new look. Well, there was also so called socialist realism culture involved, it rejected all unneccessary ornaments etc as bourgaisie trash. Unfortunately, it appears that those strong and clever ones were also patriotic so most of them perished defending their home land.

The many-sided horrors of war and their repercussions are mind-boggling...
