Time continues to fly by...I cannot believe it is Christmas again! I wish all forum members/readers a very peaceful Christmas! I hope everyone is able to share the day with loved ones and friends! p.s. to Bonobo - Did I break any Polish rules by sending Christmas wishes to everyone before the actual day of Christmas? (I'm just so darn American...!)

It's just that in the US people celebrate Christmas during Advent and once Christmas day is over, it's over for most people! (That's not true in the Catholic Church in the US, though. The Church doesn't begin celebrating until Christmas Eve and then continues until the Baptism of the Lord...this year Jan.8th.) I know from being part of this forum that Poles don't celebrate with Christmas carols, etc. until Christmas and then it continues until February 2nd, the feast of the Presentation! (Correct me if I'm wrong!)

Let me ask again: when exactly do Americans send their Christmas wishes or sing carols? I mean, the exact dates.

Let me ask again: when exactly do Americans send their Christmas wishes or sing carols? I mean, the exact dates. Our Thanksgiving holiday is the fourth Thursday in November, and the day after that the "Christmas season" starts in secular American culture. The decorations go up inside and outside homes, Christmas carols are heard, and when it gets a bit closer to Dec. 25th, people start wishing others "Merry Christmas." People start mailing out Christmas cards to their relatives and friends right after Thanksgiving also. A day or two after Christmas, the focus and wishes change to "Happy New Year." Many people leave up Christmas trees and lights until January 6th but for all intents and purposes Christmas is over Dec. 26th as far as the general population's celebration. As you would expect, I find this sad...my own celebration parallels the Church celebration in length, but I do put up my lights and tree once Advent begins.

So that`s why you asked that question: p.s. to Bonobo - Did I break any Polish rules by sending Christmas wishes to everyone before the actual day of Christmas? (I'm just so darn American...!)No, there are no rules about it here although it is uncommon to do it weeks before the holiday. A few days`advance is OK, especially when you know you won`t see somebody at Christmas. I do it in case of parents and students/pupils who I meet last time a few days before Christmas. Of course, I am talking about personal wishes, not the commercial haze in stores which also begins in November.

I was thinking that since Poland is such a Catholic country the general society paralleled the observances of the Church. So, after your explanation, the differences in the respective societies' practices in Poland and the U.S. don't sound so very different!

Sorry I have been involved in family things and neglected to visit the forum on Christmas to wish everyone all those things you mentioned... Yes, I did have a lovely Christmas with family, and shortly before Christmas I was able to travel to Vermont for a few days to see my new granddaughter...so it's been a wonderful and busy past month or so! Glad to hear you enjoyed your time off from school and were able to be wonderfully lazy for a while!

But we also remembered our deceased grandpa I would not expect otherwise, but I hope you all managed to find some cheer for the festive season, and that your wife continues to get better.
