Bartek the Oak in danger thenews.pl 24.06.2009
Poland's most famous tree – the oak named `Bartek' – is said to be in a poor condition and needs intensive care!
Research by a Polish-German team has revealed that the decay process is faster than the growth of the tree. There is a need to construct an intricate system of support columns to protect the tree's branches. The research has also shown that the oxygen content in the soil surrounding the oak is too small. The local authorities are looking for a sponsor to finance the conservation project. `Bartek' grows in Zagnansk near Kielce in the Swietokrzyskie (Holy Cross) Mountains. Its age, long estimated at up to 1200 years, has recently been established at 625 years. The tree measures 13,5 metres round its girth near the ground and its circumference at breast height is about 40 metres. Legend has it that King Jan III Sobieski, who rested under this tree on his way back after the victorious Battle of Vienna in 1683, hid a Turkish sabre and a bottle of wine inside the oak. The tree became a listed monument of nature in 1952.

Once a week I have a lesson in a living room decorated with a giant picture of certain pine which grows in Pieniny Mountains and it has become a cult tree here. I think it is even more famous than the oldest oak. Tourists post hundreds photos of the pine. Is the attraction that it is the small, strong, determined tree that beats the odds of survival and keeps growing if even in a twisted manner? A metaphor people like to embrace to help themselves get through the rigors of life? These mountains look like a sleeping dinosaur!!...or, should I say dragon, since it is sleeping in Poland??

Hmm, quite possible, one should do some research on the motifs. However, I think the main reason is that so many tourists visit the place and each of them feels obliged to take a photo and then share it with all they can. :0 Dragon/Dino Mountains are called Pieniny (meaningless word) and the summit visible is Three Crowns. Not the highest in Poland but one of most picturesque.

Local residents protested against the plans to remove their leaning pine, the symbol of the district. The mayor decided to keep it after the examination proved the tree is in a very good condition.

They had to cut off its top branch. What a pity.

There is a large old tree in the town next to mine that is growing like this one...it is in someone's front yard; I see it every time I drive by and wonder how old it is.

If woodepeckers were harmful, they would be declared pests/vermine and shoot down from trees en masse. But they aren`t coz they pick bugs and their eggs from the bark and under it.
