New Book Celebrates Amber Art and Design

Contemporary high-quality Polish amber jewelry and art is the focus of a new book, titled Top Amber.
The coffee-table sized book of amber jewelry photographs is dedicated to contemporary amber art, design, and fashion. The album presents the work of artists from Poland and abroad who took part or sat in the jury in designer competitions in Gdañsk, Warsaw, and Legnica, chiefly the ELEKTRONOS Amberif Design Award and the Mercurius Gedanensis Jewellery Competition.
The book's commentary was written by S³awomir Fija³kowski, a jewelry designer and an instructor at the Jewellery Design Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts, in Gdañsk.
Fija³kowski said the book is an attempt to elevate the image of amber from its folk art and souvenir status, to show how artists and designers are creating innovative and contemporary pieces with the prehistoric resin.
The book also serves as a retrospect, documenting the achievements of how artists create with the material as the amber industry undergoes a torrent of change led by, among other things, availability and market conditions.

» THE GRAND PRIZE
sponsored by Mr Paweł Adamowicz, the Mayor of the City of Gdańsk PLN 10.000
Ewa Wędzikowska, Sebastian Komicz
(Łódź, Poland)
The Grand Prize is awarded to Ewa Wędzikowska and Sebastian Komicz for their narrative and symbolic interpretation of The Talisman.
This very personal piece of jewellery tells a tale. Its components accumulate symbolic value by knotting together a private hand-written message with nuggets of amber, recycled ID tags and finally a photograph.
Collectively the components make a poetic and yet practical object – you can tie or hang it from wherever you choose. It is a classic version of a talisman.
THE AMBER PRIZE
sponsored by the International Amber Association - 2 kg of amber
Jan Wiszniewski, (Giżycko, Poland)
In contrast to the Grand Prize the F4 + alt pendant provides a technological reference.
The keys of a computer keyboard are borrowed to convey the “SHUT DOWN” command in a protective and spiritual context.
The piece’s appearance as a primitive totem and cross provides a tension with technology.
» THE SILVER PRIZE
sponsored by the YES Company - 3 kg of silver
Fabrizio Tridenti, (Vasto, Italy)
entry code 030664
The Third Prize is awarded to Fabrizio Tridenti for a piece which offers the broadest possibility for interpretation out of the final three. The sculptural object is assembled from found and weathered components. Amber pebbles are framed in a rusty tin box that holds its own history and mystery. This box makes a reference to the ancient Roman custom of keeping figurines of one’s ancestors and the Roman demigods who protected the household, but it also echoes Joseph Cornell’s raw and wonderful box frame works.
That was pure art. Now see amber jewellery sold in Clothes Hall in Kraków.
Silver jewellery is also there:
