Bad news, the mayor passed away because of injuries to vital organs. Doctors operated for 5 hours but to no avail. The last time a politician of this scale was assassinated in Poland was in 1934. pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zab%C3%B3jstwo_Bronis%C5%82awa_PierackiegoAll decent news portals are black and white. It is like a bad dream. He had been elected last November. During the charity event, he made a speech. Later he moved to the side. The stabbing took place when everybody was looking at symbolic "lights to Heaven" The attack was easy because the Mayor wasn`t protected by bodyguards. He never needed them, was always open to people. Attack - you can see the murderer approaching the mayor Assassin on the stage, after stabbing. Nobody realised what happened so he was able to walk triumphantly and shout out his grievances to the microphone. He was still holding his long army knife. 30 seconds had to pass for people to react. The security overpowered the murderer, but it was the concert technicians who took action first. The murderer didn`t resist. Doctors were pessimistic from the very beginning. They transfused 20 litres of blood during the operation. People are waiting to donate blood for Gdansk’s mayor at blood donation station in Gdansk on January 14, 2019. – A knife-wielding assailant stabbed Pawel Adamowicz, the mayor of the Polish port city of Gdansk, in front of hundreds of people at a charity event, leaving the politician fighting for his life on Monday, January 14, 2019, after five hours of surgery. "I have terrible news to communicate." Heart and arteries were damaged. Assassin is a young criminal who did the sentence of 5 years for bank robberies. He didn`t work and used the money to go on holidays abroad. He blamed the Mayor and his party for his situation. That is why we can talk about political assassination, undermined with mental background - some sources claim he is a confirmed paranoic. While in prison, he was diagnosed for schizophrenia.

Bonobo,
Monday was a very black and sad day in Poland after the death of Pawel Adamowicz. There is something wrong with the political climate in Europe in general and Poland in particular. To much hatred, rage, fanaticism, ego's and the idea that people can take matters in their own hands like this Stefan W. from Gdańsk.
I am very sorry for Adamowicz wife and lovely daughters, sorry for you Bonobo, Tuftabis, and other Polish Culture Forum members, the citizens of Gdańsk who lost their mayor, sorry for the Polish people, sorry for the Polish democracy, for people of his Platforma Obywatelska party, and ofcourse sorry for pluralism, Freedom and Democracy in general.
This is a Black day for Poland and Europe.
My Polish cousin wrote to me in a Facebook chat: "I cannot find the words to say even remotely how shocked and depressed I feel. It really is a black Day.. I will write some more soon."

E.g., PiS controlled state TV evening news didn`t respect the tragedy, but again used aggressive manipulation against PiS`s opponents and the charity leader. Their broadcast is estimated as one of the most repulsive in the history of PiS TV. It is a natural supposition that the hateful message created by PiS and spread in the public space every day may have contributed to the death of Adamowicz. Mad assassins don`t choose accidental victims, they have to be programmed first. The programme is downloaded into a disturbed mind through the atmosphere and political situation in the country.

To much hatred, rage, fanaticism, ego's and the idea that people can take matters in their own hands like this Stefan W. from Gdańsk. Pieter Hate has overwhelmed us and doesn`t allow to lead a happy life. And I don`t mean only those uneducated simpletons who believe in PiS and in its "mission" of saving Poland and who despise anybody who dares to voice objection to the immoral methods used. But even decent people are infected with hate, e..g, me (sorry for lacking modesty and calling myself decent). I sometimes can`t resist when I read or write about PiS and all their dirty deeds. The last time I felt such hate was in dark communist times of martial law 1981-82 and later, when people were persecuted, beaten or murdered by the regime`s henchmen and one could do nothing about it. The communist state TV also lied and manipulated. I felt so helpless then and it caused frustration. Fortunately, I was young and could escape from frustration in many ways - books, hobbies, friends, parties - my own private world. Today we are not so helpless because we still have democratic elections, free media and the EU backing, but I feel that every day with PiS in power is a lost day for Poland. Instead of moving on, we are going backward. My frustration has come back but today there is little escape from it for a grown up man, because too many things absorb me and cause stress at the same time. I just can`t create a private world for myself anymore, I have too many responsibilities. Simply speaking, I count each day like a prisoner waiting for release. I just can`t wait to see those guys gone, even to hell, because they have poisoned our souls with hate and spoiled relations between people on a scale unknown before. And they did it on purpose, with full awareness of the consequences. The evil they sowed is harvested today.

Adamowicz belonged to the opposition party and was voted mayor in 4 elections (20 years which was a record in Poland). In result, the campaign of hate has been unleashed not only against him but the whole opposition by PiS, its media and supporters. Chronicle of Death Foretold - how PiS promotes the campaign of hate against their opponents PiS-controlled prosecutors intentionally ignored various cases of verbal aggression against opposition politicians made by nationalist rightwing groups. . E.g., PiS did nothing with nationalist protesters who hanged Europarliament opposition members in effigy. PiS prosecutors also refused to sue the nationalist authors of the Certificate of Death directed at Adamowicz and ten other mayors throughout Poland. poznan.wyborcza.pl/poznan/7,36001,24365608,przed-smiercia-adamowicza-prokuratura-umorzyla-sprawe-aktow.html#nowaZajawkaGlownaMT#S.DT-K.C-P.1-B.1-L.1.duzy Instead, PiS Prime Minister invited a nationalist politician to join his cabinet. www.tvn24.pl/tvn24-news-in-english,157,m/former-all-polish-youth-head-chosed-as-digital-affairs-deputy-minister,896933.html A former chief of the All-Polish Youth has become the new digital affairs deputy minister. He's 28 and his former colleagues from Kukiz'15 movement call his appointment a moral and intellectual downfall. Opposition calls him a anti-European nationalist; the nationalists, in turn, make it shorter - "a sycophant". (http://www.tvn24.pl)During recent local council election campaign Adamowicz was heavily attacked and blackened in PiS TV. Analysis of state TV hateful commentaries wiadomosci.onet.pl/opinie/jak-tvp-opowiadala-o-pawle-adamowiczu-analiza/hlfgq82He was also attacked by other rightwing media: Little revenge of political deadman on reporters.www.fronda.pl/a/mala-zemsta-politycznego-trupa-na-dziennikarzach-tvp,115785.html Last but not least As a tolerant person who welcomed all groups, also those despised by right wingers, Adamowicz was treated with suspicion by some clergy. A priest twittered after the assassination: Why should I say prayers for him? He is to blame for various indecent acts. Did Jesus pray for Herod? wiadomosci.onet.pl/kraj/pawel-adamowicz-nie-zyje-ksiadz-ukarany-przez-kurie-za-wpis-na-twitterze/zjxndkmPS. The hate campaign is also directed against Jerzy Owsiak, the biggest charity event leader. A few days ago state PiS TV broadcast an animation which presented Jerzy Owsiak as an accomplice to robbing the raised money by an anti-PiS opposition member. There are some Jewish allusions in the background. E.g., they showed this banknote: Incredible propaganda. Bonobo, The situation you describe in Poland is deeply sad. I hope that things will change in time due to democratic elections. Fact is that a rightwing wave is going through Europe right now. Also former liberal countries like the Netherlands and Denmark shifted to the right, with their hard Euroscpetic (Anti-EU), Anti-immigrant, xenophobic growing rightwing Nationalist Populist movements and center right governments. Their seems to be a nationalistic and isolationalist mode in Europe and the world. I wonder if that is a long term or short term thing. Pieter Yes, time. The shift to the right is natural after so many years of the left rule - it is a simple act of keeping balance in nature. But it seems that the previous policy of welcoming all immigrants with open arms has hastened that shift - societies are tired and no longer want to accept new comers. That is why support for rightwing xenophobic groups has increased and will stay for some time, even decades, I presume.

Bad news is that there is no end to it, even such tragic events won`t teach people anything. I was right. Today the National Parliament honoured Adamowicz with the minute of silence. A few main PiS politicians were absent, first of all, PiS chairman Kaczyński and his closest aides. natemat.pl/260989,poslowi-uczcili-adamowicza-minuta-ciszy-kaczynskiego-nie-bylo-na-sali Also, the council of Łódź declared the minute of silence but PiS council members boycotted it. Empty seats. Only one has come, out of 8.
Why are PiS guys so mean? As most Polish rightwingers, they are Catholics. I don`t really get it. And I abhor such hypocrisy and blatant rejection of Christian values.
All decent voters must remember about such events at the ballot.

The funeral day. Various people had speeches, apart from remembering the mayor, they also appealed to stop the hate campaign. Funeral
On 18 January 2019, Adamowicz's coffin was decorated with white flowers and draped with the flag of Gdańsk, before being driven in a hearse from the European Solidarity Centre in the city, past schools, monuments and other places significant to the dead mayor's life. It was watched by thousands of people on screen. When the hearse reached the Church of St Mary, the city's main basilica, the coffin was brought into the church. After a mass, Adamowicz was cremated.[31][32]
On 19 January, the main funeral service was held at St Mary's Church, Gdańsk. Notable people who attended included Donald Tusk, President Andrzej Duda, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, former Presidents of Poland Lech Wałęsa, Aleksander Kwaśniewski and Bronisław Komorowski, and former German President Joachim Gauck. Thousands more Poles watched the service on screens. At the end of the service, Adamowicz's ashes were laid to rest in one of the chapels of St Mary's Church.[31][32] Major cities broadcast the events live for residents

Adamowicz had a long career en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pawe%C5%82_Adamowicz Adamowicz was born in Gdańsk. His parents Ryszard and Teresa were Polish economists, who were resettled to Poland from Vilnius, Soviet Lithuania, in 1946.[7] Paweł later recalled that his parents were suspicious of the communist system and party propaganda. "Like many Poles of our generation, [my] brother and I have thus been shaped against the obligatory official history; since childhood we have known not only the sinister wording of the Gestapo abbreviation, but also the NKVD; we perfectly understood what is behind the names of distant places: Kazakhstan, Siberia, Katyn. We hardly saw a place for ourselves in this double world."[7]
He studied law at the University of Gdańsk, where he also rose to prominence as a student movement member. He was one of the organizers of the 1988 strike, becoming the head of the strike committee.[8] Between 1990 and 1993, he served as a vice-rector for student affairs at his alma mater.[3][9]
In 1990, Adamowicz was elected a member of the city council in Gdańsk, chairing the council from 1994 in his second term, and holding this post until 1998, when he was elected the Mayor of Gdańsk.[3] On 10 November 2002 he was re-elected with 72% of the vote.[4]
He was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Golden Cross by Pope John Paul II, and the Cross of Merit in 2003 by President Aleksander Kwaśniewski.[10] In 2014 he received the Cross of Freedom and Solidarity in honour of his contributions on behalf of Polish democracy.[11]
In 2018 he was an honorary patron of the 4th Gdańsk Gay Pride Parade, in which he also participated.[12]
In November 2018, Adamowicz ran as an independent for the office of Mayor of Gdańsk and was re-elected for a sixth term, being endorsed by the Civic Platform and remaining a vocal critic of the current ruling party in Poland, Law and Justice. He was due to serve until 2023.[5] www.fakt.pl/wydarzenia/polska/pawel-adamowicz-prymus-o-wielkiej-odwadze/0hdjh0q#slajd-6
