ONET TRAVELS WHERE FOR THE WEEKEND
Bytom Odrzański - a competitor of Kazimierz Dolny?
We can be proud of Bytom Odrzański. It captivates with one of the most beautiful markets in Poland, fascinates with the richness of history and gives others a model of order and cleanliness. Is the town on the Odra River likely to become as popular as Kazimierz Dolny?

The Oder connects various cities: Opole, famous for its music festival, Wrocław, the beautiful capital of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship , and Frankfurt, the German riverside, among others . On the route of this river, we will also find completely unknown and surprising places. One of them is Bytom Odrzański, the pearl of Lubuskie .
The town with less than 5,000 inhabitants is squeezed between Nowa Sól, known for its garden gnomes, and the over 1000-year-old Głogów . It is situated on the left, quiet bank of the Odra River and delights with its almost virgin landscape near the Dalkowskie Hills . It went down in the history of Poland thanks to the famous defense against the German troops of Emperor Henry V in August 1109, from which Gall Anonymous presented the following, very fantastically edited report:
"And the townspeople, opening the gates, came out with their swords drawn, fearing neither the multitude of various troops, nor the aggression of the Germans, nor the presence of the Emperor himself, but with a bold and valiant resistance to them. without protective armor they fought with bare swords against shield bearers, and shield bearers against armored ones, rushing to the fight so eagerly, as if for a feast ".

The remains of the earliest history of Bytom Odrzańskie must be searched for about 1.5 km west of the present-day city limits. There are the remains of the castellan stronghold, but I warn you - it will not be easy to find a way to them. So I would like to invite you for a tour of the architectural treasure of the Lubuskie Voivodeship , which can be made expressly or without rush, tasting nature and details.
Lubuski, Kazimierz Dolny
"The route is very well known ..." - one would like to hum after Kazik. However, we do not wander from one bar to a bar, but from the train station, through the market square, to the bend of the river. And the way to the most interesting monuments of the city is simple and short . While walking along Dworcowa Street, it is worth paying attention to the charming buildings of the kindergarten and the post office.

The first thing that surprises in Bytom on the Oder is order and cleanliness . Evenly trimmed lawns, neat flower beds, manicured greenery. - We are trying to restore the German order - say with a smile the employees of the Municipal Office, located in the historic town hall.
This order is best seen in the old town. It is distinguished by the Renaissance town hall building with a huge, high tower. Unfortunately, it cannot be entered. Its condition leaves much to be desired. - It's a pity, because the views from there are beautiful - says Tomasz Chmielewski, sub-inspector for tourism.

So you have to be content with the "one-story" view of the houses around. Fortunately, there is something to hang your eye on! "A series of bourgeois tenement houses with richly ornamented late Renaissance facades, the massive churches and the town hall towering above them, the scale and atmosphere of the whole vividly remind of Kazimierz on the Vistula " - wrote Michał Witwicki, author of the first Polish study on the town in Lubuskie.
This charm has not faded away. Some time ago, filmmakers also appreciated it. A war movie was filmed here. "Deafened by the silence . " Bytom Odrzański played a ruined town on the Elbe in it, thus beating Wrocław, which was also taken into account by the team.
Black tomcat, friend of the tipsy
Probably every resident, when asked about the most beautiful building in the city, will answer the same: Hotel Pod Złotym Lwem . The richly decorated, baroque facade of the tenement house is hard to miss. It is distinguished by a bas-relief of a lion above the entrance, and a somewhat mysterious sculpture stands nearby. It was placed in 2007 and shows… a human-sized male cat supporting a shaking gentleman.

The black cat from Bytom is extremely distinguished, serious, and at the same time focused on its task: it helps to keep the tipsy guests who have lost their way home. According to the plaque at the monument, the legend of a helpful pet is already 400 years old, although such a cat would certainly be useful in any Polish city ...
A fisherman's son and a fishing staircase
Bytom's old town also hides other curiosities. The first one is on the market. It is a columned fountain with a naked boy whose origins are still shrouded in a haze of uncertainty . Both the inhabitants of Bytom and journalists often repeat the simple legend about its creation. At the beginning of the last century, a fisherman lost his beloved son to the Oder river. In memory of this tragedy, his parents were to put up a bronze statue of a boy on the city fountain.
Was it really so? There is no certainty. Based on old photos and documents, regionalists argue that the mysterious figure commemorates someone completely different - the German Nobel laureate, Robert Koch . The eminent physician and bacteriologist allegedly founded the figurine himself. If the legend only colors the local history, and the figurine was created in honor of Koch, is it a coincidence that the boy is holding a fishing net ...?

Unfortunately, the metal plate that could once and for all clarify the issue of the Bytom fountain boy is lost. Interestingly, the local monument has also been compared to the famous peeing boy, the symbol of Brussels. Nevertheless, the historical evidence contradicts any provenance.
In turn, in the eastern corner of the square, there is another interesting monument related to the local heritage. Inconspicuous but unique fishing stairs. Atmospheric stone steps lead to the bank of the Oder , taking the walkers back to distant times. After descending them, you can admire the local marina.

The city lives in harmony with the river and water sportsmen. The Bytom marina offers 10 free berths, while in the port and in front of the marina (on the other side of the Oder) there are the best fishing spots. There is a free boat crossing to the opposite shore every day between 6:00 am and 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
Broken bridge
The fact that the town of Lubuskie again turns towards the river is also evidenced by the river "pier", i.e. a walking promenade. It is actually a "broken bridge", partially rebuilt on the site of a former crossing.

Many tourists may be surprised by the fact that there is no bridge in Bytom Odrzańskie . But he was. And it's gorgeous! It was almost a kilometer long, delighted with Art Nouveau decorations and bonded both banks of the Odra River. One of the most beautiful crossings in this part of the country was opened in 1907. Due to the war, the bridge did not serve the locals for too long.
A technological masterpiece has become the arena of Dante's scenes. They hung here, among others Ukrainian nationalists . On February 10, 1945, the retreating German troops blew up the bridge. Since then, the idea of resuming the crossing has become a persistent dream of the inhabitants. Tourists also suffered because the bridge led to the huge knight's castle in Siedlisko (now partially ruined, but definitely worth visiting).
Redemption of faults
You cannot be in Bytom on the Oder and not see the Church of St. Jerome. Its massive tower with a tented roof is hard to miss. A stone and brick temple with a centuries-old history protects its interior with barrel vaults with lunettes and rich baroque furnishings, especially the main altar and the pulpit. And it guards so effectively that outside the hours of mass it is usually difficult to get inside. Fortunately, what arouses the most excitement is outside.
In the wall of the oriented church there are, among others, cannonballs - traces of Swedish shelling during the Thirty Years' War . On the other hand, at the corners of the brick wall there are unusual monuments. They are T-shaped penitential crosses (St. Anthony's cross). They are a testimony to the old tradition of the so-called the penitential treaty.
Stone memorabilia of crimes and forgiveness from centuries ago
Medieval sentences were harsh. The murderers were beheaded . The perpetrator could, however, avoid death by writing the treatise with the victim's family. The redemption of wines consisted, inter alia, in to cover the costs of the funeral and pilgrimage to the holy place. The last provision of the contract was to erect a penitential cross (sometimes called a cross of reconciliation), usually in the place where the crime was committed, along with forging the instrument of the crime on it. You can find out what the killers were up to when you come to this extremely interesting town.
