The largest Koniaków drape, which will go to Expo 2020 in Dubai, was officially approved in the Guinness Book of Records on Sunday, January 16. The drape is over 5 meters, weighs over 5 kg, and the intricate work of lace makers is breathtaking.
- The drape is 5.32 m, made of a thin cotton thread, weighs 5 kg and 550 g. It consists of 3338 plant motifs, the so-called florists. It was established in four months to fly to the Expo 2020 Dubai exhibition, during which the Koniaków Lace Center will promote the Silesian Voivodeship, informs the Koniaków Lace Center.
Long preparation of lace makers for Expo 2020
The presentation of the largest drape in Poland, which will fly to Expo 2020 (the exhibition was scheduled from October 20, 2020 to April 10, 2021, but due to the pandemic, it was postponed to the period from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022) took place in the Istebna resort Złoty Groń Resort & Spa. It was attended, among others, by Wojciech Kałuża, Deputy Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship and Beata Białowąs , Member of the Voivodeship Board .
The gigantic tablecloth is the result of the meticulous and arduous work of several Koniakow lace makers, incl. Zuzanna Ptak and her daughters and granddaughters - Danuta Juroszek, Wiesława Juroszek and Anna Juroszek. The workmanship is stunning, but it is not surprising, because Koniaków lace makers have been preparing for the Expo in Dubai for a long time, exactly three years.
- Three years ago, one of the architects from Warsaw called me and offered to work in a team that designed the concept of a Polish pavilion with a lace motif. In fact ... I was giving birth to a son. I picked up the phone in the delivery room and said I couldn't talk. The Lord, however, insisted and said that he would call in a few weeks - says DZ Lucyna Ligocka-Kohut, president of the Koniakowska Lace Foundation.
The architect kept his word. The design of the pavilion with lace was created, but it did not win the competition. So Mrs. Lucyna sat down at her desk one evening and developed her own lace exhibition concept one night, which she then sent to the office of the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH) in Warsaw.
It is she who is responsible for the preparations related to the presence of Poland at the Expo in Dubai. The idea of a highlander liked it so much that the coordinator of cooperation with the regions presented it at a meeting with the management of the Silesian Voivodeship. In Koniaków, ladies grabbed the crochet hooks.
Gadgets at the Expo were hacked by 150 lace makers!
Ms Lucyna engaged 150 lace makers to coat all the intricate napkins and napkins, dresses and wardrobe accessories that will be used as gadgets for visitors to the exhibition. The concept includes, in addition to the presentation of traditional tablecloths, also a show of 20 lace dresses. That is why the lace makers invited the designer Beata Bojda, who eagerly reaches for folk art. The collection of crocheted dresses will be complemented by colorful crowns woven with crepe flowers. After all, flowers are the leitmotif of Koniaków lace.
During the Silesian Week in Dubai, between January 27 and February 2, 2022, the exhibition will be accompanied by lace fashion shows. For this occasion, lace makers also made 10 thousand. various napkins, necklaces, earrings, and for men - bow ties, bow ties, ties and pocket squares that will be handed out to guests as gadgets. They will also take with them to Dubai the world's largest lace entered in the Guinness Book of Records.
From the Beskid countryside to the world exhibition
For lace makers, participation in the exhibition is an opportunity to open new markets.
- We hope that the event will open up new opportunities for us to organize exhibitions, shows and sell lace only - admits Ligocka-Kohut. - One of the first questions I heard at PAIH was whether we are aware that participation in the exhibition may result in an avalanche of orders. I'm sure we can handle it. There are 700 lace makers in Koniaków. We are the largest lace district, nowhere else in the world are there as many artists as here. Such a development of events will provide us with work and confirm that it is worth cultivating tradition - assures the president of the foundation.
Although Mrs. Lucyna does not crochet herself, it is thanks to her that the work of female artists has revived in recent years. First, she founded the Koronki Koniakowskie Foundation, and then she created the Koronki Koniakowska Center, which today combines the functions of a museum, an integration center and a shop.
It is worth noting that the ladies from Koniaków were hating, among others, for Christian Dior, Elie Saab and Louis Vuitton. Beyoncé used to order earrings in Koniaków, and in the past, napkins and tablecloths were sent to the court of the Belgian queen. Four years ago, lace even had its own episode of Discovery Chanel's English program "How do they do it". It was also placed on the national list of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage. However, it will be presented in Dubai for the first time.
- Our napkins are always available in two colors - white or cream. For the purposes of the exhibition in Dubai, the ladies also chelated black. In reference to the outfit that Arab women wear in the Emirates - explains Ligocka-Kohut.
