Hey... I enjoyed Chaucer when I was in college... Native speakers perceive it differently.... I also like old Polish poetry. Well, that is true, but we read it in the original old English which was like a foreign language to me.

We also read it in the original. But it wasn`t only a foreign language to me. It was triple Dutch hahahaha. And I didn`t often get the context, so I had to depend on the teacher too much, e.g., in case of the Knight who admitted to some collaboration or dirty deeds with Muslims during crucades or so. I don`t like such situations when I am completely at a loss.

It would indeed be triple Dutch for someone not a native speaker !!

Is there a light version of it too? I didn`t know.... I still keep my old books from uni. Gosh, I am so sentimental! Here it goes, Canterbury Tales: The Prologue Here begynneth the Book of the tales of C. Whan that Aprille with his shources soote The droughte of March hath perced to the roote, And bathed evry veyne in swich licour OF which vertu engendred is the flour; etc Is it the Old English we had to study or not?

Hey, I still have my college books too...it's not being sentimental, just practical. You never know when you might need to look back...as evidenced by your quote of Chaucer! And, yes (!), that is the Old English you had to study. And, there is indeed a 'light' version translated into modern English. I think I remember reading some of it in High School. I guess they thought our minds were not yet ready for the rigors of the original. Also, how appropriate that you quoted from the beginning of Canterbury Tales, since we are now in April, having just left March behind. Don't those words just make you want to continue reading....??

Isn't Chaucer a piece of Middle, no Old, English? I was having the initial verses in mind during yesterday's storm over my town .

Isn't Chaucer a piece of Middle, no Old, English? Kamil, Yes, indeed, you are correct. Chaucer's writing is 'Middle' or 'Medieval' English. I should clarify what I meant by 'old' English. I was referring to the English spoken at the time of Chaucer's writing in the late 14th century. I probably should have asked if you Polish students read it in the 'original' verse, not 'old'. Many editions of Chaucer which students read nowadays have been translated into the more modern, contemporary English that is used today. Sorry for the confusion. True 'old' English writings would be more along the line of 'Beowulf'. But, it's nice to have a bright, young scholar here to keep me in line! It's been quite a few years since I graduated from college! I also often call to mind these opening verses when the month of March turns into April. Too bad Bonobo has become too busy to enjoy the thoughts!

Hello and Witam! I came across this forum through another... I'm an avid Polish Genealogist and like to research Polish History. My Fathers folks came from Kashubia (hence the avatar), Pommerania, and the Poznan area, so I am interested in learning as much as I can about my Polish heritage and hopefully I will be an asset to this board. Jim

Jim Hello Jim. You are certainly a great asset to our forum as we are rather poor genealogists here. But we are much better at History, especially Polish. As for Kashuby region, I visited it last year and am planning to return this year.

Thank you for the warm welcome Bonobo. Where did you visit in Kashubia and where do you live now? Some of my folks were from Lipusz and Koscierzyna Parishes. They all ended up in Minnesota... By the way, I also transcribe for the Poznan Project and have many Parish records for the Pomorze and Poznan areas. Hopefully, my intent here it to learn more about Polish Culture and share what I know about history as well as learn more on this subject also. Jim

I'm a second generation American who has begun a very slow search to find where my grandparents came from in Poland. Can you tell me what the Poznan Project is? I vaguely remember hearing the name before, but have no idea what it is! Jeanne

Are you the Kustelski who put together the Kustelski and Jasinski ancestry page? If so, thanks! My cousins know very little about their father's family history. They are Kustelskis, descended from Bronislaw Kustelski.

Jeanne, The Poznan Project Marriage database was created to assist folks in finding the Parish of record for their families who came from this area: bindweed.man.poznan.pl/posen/search.phpHere is the area I am working on: bindweed.man.poznan.pl/posen/data/db.php?region=1Bonobo, I took the time last night to check out all your vacation pictures from last year, I see you were in Bytow. That's pretty close to where some of my family came from! Thanks for sharing all the great pics! Gigi, Yes, that is my ancestry website. It is a work in progress and I still have a lot to do but it has come a long way in the past year or so since I started on it. Right now I am working on my Mothers Bavarian ancestors and the next stop is her Austrian roots. Here's the link if you are interested: james.kustelski.googlepages.com/homeNice to meet you all! Jim

Thanks for sharing all the great pics! Jim I am glad you liked them. Yes, we visited Bytów and didn`t regret it. The town is small but extraordinarily pretty and the castle is magnificent. As I said, we are going to return to the area this year to explore new sites.

Jim,
Do you think you can help me? I have been searching for information on my grandparents for several years, without out any luck. Grandfather, Ferdynand Dabrowski/Dombrowski, came from Broszka, Poland, born May 30th. 1875, and Grandmother, Maryanna Dabrowski/Dombrowski, M/N could have been Grabowski, came from Piotrowice, Poland, born July 10th. 1887. The only other things I know is they live in Gary, Indiana, until they both passed away in 1954. Do you, if you can't help me, know of someone who can?
Michael Dabrowski
