It is strange how people in their adulthood tend to look for the same or similar conditions that they had in childhood, even if those were negative and associated with nasty emotions. E.g,. when I look at my family, I can see that 3 of my 4 aunts divorced their husbands due to their alcohol problem. One husband was a waiter, next a restaurant manager, eventually was found dead drunk on a park bench. He didn`t make it back home. Another was an opera singer, with a powerful voice. He also died somewhat in 1980s. The third one was I have no idea who or what because he lasted the shortest.
Divorces took place in 1970s. Aunts still had contact with their exs, because there were children. I can say that in two cases the contact turned into an informal reunion, and later on into another informal divorce and so on - the couples got together and broke up with each other on regular basis.
Why was it so? Sometimes my mother told me vaguely about my grandpa who had died before I was born. He was a hopeless drunk. There were moments when kids had to run away to the attic or to neighbours` because the irritated and stoned daddy threatened to kill everyone around with an axe. My mother had some mental scars about it, she didn`t want to tell me details.
However, it seems that at least 3 daughters were so emotionally tied to their father that in their adult lives they tried to find a guy of the same sort. They made wrong choices, though.

Years back, in Poland, with the war and all, the men could have had a reason to drink, since times were hard to feed the family, but not now, so they don't any longer have that reason. Is it that they just can't, or won't face life, and work for the things the family needs, and wants? Many here have the same problems, they only care for them selfs, and no one else.

My old printer has broken again. Two lights flash at the same time. It most probably means the printer reached its work limit and needs to be reset/cleared by the authorised service. It had already happened about 3 years ago and I had paid through the nose. It served me for about 6 years. I used it mostly to print test sheets for my students. I am not going to take it to repair now. I have just bought a Canon printer, new, though a model present in the market for a few years. I am going to refill it like my previous printer. I am a mean Krakowian, that is why I don`t want to buy original ink catridges. A syringe, a needle and students won`t mind the quality. Other institutions won`t, either.

Wow.
For a few weeks I was sure I have a virus on my computer. The browser opened slowly, so did forums etc. Downloading went at a snail`s pace though I have a fast connection now.
I installed a dozen anti-vir programs which found nothing.
Dead end situation.
Today my vorther in law came round and accidentally switched on his laptop. Looked for unsecured connections and found mine. I learnt that my router configuration was not blocked with a password and everybody around in the area could use my connection. That slowed my comp.
Now, it works like fast and furious.
Sometimes an unexpected visit may bring fruitful solutions.

Now one of man from Georgia, got killed when he was practicing lugo last Friday before Ceremony Opening. Now everybody are afraid after what happen. I think it make sense to me. Do You, Bonobo? There are not too many hills in US to practice jumping. Most are in Aspen only. 2. If there are hills with ski jump launching pads on them out of Aspen, they are too expensive for an average American. 3. Americans don`t like skiing sports. They prefer basketball and other balls.

When do you know it is time to change your old winter tyres?
When you get stuck in snow three times over 2 days.
Yesterday I got stuck twice but good people helped me.
Today just once, but for a longer time. I am also a good man, luckily, so I managed to help myself out of the snowy mess with a spade.
Tomorrow I will spend some dough, though.

Oh, shit. I have never imagined I would ever use sticky tape to get rid of flies. But we are overrun by these insects, I am really amazed there are so many of them. Floods have caused it? I bought 4 pieces of sticky stuff. I can say those ribbon tapes work very well. After 2 days they are full of flies. I pity those little creatures which do what they must do but seeing a black swarm flying under the lights is too annoying.

Luxemburg, Hungary and the Czech republic have the heaviest drinkers of Europe and the world!
I always thaught that the Brits, Swedes and Dutch were the heaviest drinkers, because in the Netherlands or in larger Dutch cities (or European cities) you always see drunken Brits and Swedes next to the Dutch drunks. I saw them in Saalbach-Hinterglem in Austria when I had my school ski holiday camp in 1989 and on the boat to Great Britain and back. And I saw drunken Brits in Amsterdam and Arnhem. ;D Yeeh, how drunk these Brits can get, and how rude to eachother and others. Friends insult or attack eachother. I saw it happening in front of my eyes. And I know about the problem of children or partners with an alcoholic father or mother. I lost one of my best friends due to alcoholism. I broke of all ties with him. I knew that Czechia is a beer country and that the beer consumption is high there.
But drunken Dutch, German and other people are terrible too. In Poland I saw drunken Poles in Poznan, Warsaw and Krakow and they were as annoying as everywhere. I saw violence due to alcohol and male testeron in Poznan in 1988 when I was going out there one night. It seemed that half of the people was drunk there at night and that there was a sort of large scale demoralisation and despair. The differance between day and night was huge. I saw wasted people due to alcoholism in Krakow and Warsaw too. The same kind of people I saw in Amsterdam and Arnhem. (the Dutch version of the Polish drunks, and the Dutch version of violence in the combination of alcohol and going out. Violence, agression, fighting, abuse, vandalism and attacks are a problem due to alcoholism in Dutch cities and towns. The combination of alchol and drugs makes that even more dangerous or a problem)
My mother has contempt for drunks, alcoholics and drinking (alcohol) due to her experiance in Poland. She hates the lack of disciplin of drinkers and has nearly an aversion against strong alcoholic beverages. I don't have the same opinion like her, but agree that a lack of disciplin in moderate drinking is a serious problem in our countries. My Polish Dziadek, Josef Kotowicz was killed in an accident, when he was killed by a drunk Polish driver in Poznan in 1976, when he walked over a Zebra crossing. The guy got a life long prison sentance back then for drunk driving.

sorry to hear about your Dziadek, Pieter. Thank you Tufta! It was a great loss, a tragedy back then for my mother in Holland, babcia in Poznan and the rest of the family (us). Maybe that is part of the reason of my mothers aversion towards alcoholism.

Waiting at the vet`s with my cats, I observed a dead mosquito on the wall. It struck me how human existence, in most cases, is similar to that insect`s. A short life, spent on satisfying basic needs which are a result of our animal ancestry.

We all think these things Bo. I was thinking about what I would reply to your post when it occured to me that most of the people who mentored me in life really had no idea that they were doing so. What I mean by this is that we look for feedback in life that we are doing the right thing or positively impacting others with our interactions. When I realized that those who affected me most never really knew it, then so it probably is with me, and you. We are all here to do something. Moses, Noah, and the Apostles all spent many days doing the mundane tasks of humanity when one day they did something that was exactly what was needed. When they went to their graves they probably still didn't fully know the effect of what they had been prepared for. Maybe it is so with us.
-just a thought.

When I realized that those who affected me most never really knew it, then so it probably is with me, and you. It is difficult for me to understand it and consequently agree. Mostly we are mentored by our parents and it is their job from the beginning to bring us up. When I recall my parents, almost everything they said or did with/to us aimed at the development of us, kids, into responsible adults. Yes, positive feedback is what most people crave for and when they don`t get it, they are unhappy, unless they are tough guys. ;D ;D ;D Do you compare us to Moses and others?
