Two MPs from the opposition Law and Justice party have been fined by a court in Cyprus for damaging property and being drunk in charge of golf carts.
The court punished Law and Justice’s Karol Karski and Lukasz Zbonikowski with a 11,500-euro fine.
The MPs deny the charges and any knowledge of the court case.
Karski and Zbonikowski went to Cyprus in November 2008 to represent the Polish parliament during a meeting of the Committee on Legal Affairs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
According to Cypriot police, the drunk MPs seized two golf carts from the hotel and organized a cart race. As a result one cart crashed into a wall and another got stuck on a breakwater by the sea.
“A rock was placed on the accelerator pedal which suggests that the perpetrator wanted the cart to crash into the breakwater or fall into the sea,” said the police report.
The golf carts cost 10,000 euro plus 140 euro VAT, according to a letter sent to the Polish embassy in Cyprus.
Both MPs denied the allegations and reportedly refused to give evidence claiming parliamentary immunity, according to the TVN 24 news station.
Karski and Zbonikowski both say that they had no knowledge of the court proceedings and will be appealing the verdict.
Meanwhile Law and Justice MP Mariusz Kamiński says he believes his party colleagues had not been drunk nor had they crashed any golf carts, and that the charges are a way of “extorting money”.
“Trust is a fundament in politics and I believe my colleagues,” he said.

Polish hunter sues after failing to bag elephant 03.02.2011 07:31 A Polish businessman is suing a travel agency after he failed to find elephants to shoot whilst hunting in Zimbabwe.
Waldemar I. (name withheld under Polish law) from Bytow in the Pomerania region in northern Poland, had long dreamt of hunting elephants in the African bush.
In a bid to fulfil his fantasy, he enlisted the help of hunting specialists Jaworski Jagreisen, a German-based firm that also organises trips in pursuit of Polish bison.
The company organised a trip for Waldemar I. to Zimbabwe, and the huntsman was picked up in Harare by staff from the Mopani Safaris company. However, the adventure was not to be a success.
“They took me to a terrain where there simply weren't any elephants,” he told the Rzeczpospolita daily.
“The bagging of trophies was simply out of the question.”
The head of Jaworski Jagreisen was in court in Poznan on Tuesday, where he argued that “the terrain is difficult and hilly, but elephants are present.”
“From what I know, Waldemar I. would have seen their dung,” he added.
The case has been adjourned until 15 February. The plaintiff is hoping to secure 32,000 zl (8,000 euros) from the company to cover his safari costs.

Duncan Disorderly 03/02/2011 11:45:40 What a creep. This guy spends a bundle to gratify his perverse desire to slaughter a magnificent animal. For me, people like this are no better than those western men who go to Thailand looking for children to have sex with. Bozo 03/02/2011 12:53:35 Was there a written 'guarantee' of bagging an elephant? If not I would say he is out of luck.

It was his own fault, he should have known better than to go to a German firm for help. And what did he plan to do with the elephant if he shot one? This is a case, of to much money. I got my elephant from a African company, and it was great, with some B.B.Q. sauce on it, and cooked all day. But we did have much leftovers.

‘I’m the one who’s supposed to be an idiot’ 07.03.2011 12:28
Prime Minister Donald Tusk (right) found himself on the receiving end of some risqué humour over the weekend during a spirited mockery courtesy of noted actor Krzysztof Globisz.
The ‘scandal’, as it has been described in the press, happened at a gala marking the inauguration of the activity of the National Centre of Sciences in Krakow.
Globisz, who had been hired as master of ceremonies, appeared to take a leaf out of the book of British comedian Ricky Gervais, who made a series a controversial puns at this year’s Golden Globes.
Announcing the names of such distinguished guests as His Emininence Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz in a style reminiscent of drunken and decidedly mischievous butler, the actor later called the Prime Minister to the stage in an eccentric fashion (see video).
When the Prime Minister announced that he had prepared a speech in a rather more solemn style, as befitting the occasion, and yet now felt obliged to echo Globisz’s repartee, the actor retorted:
‘Mr Premier: I’m the one who’s supposed to be an idiot.’
Nevertheless, when quizzed afterwards by reporters, Tusk appeared unflummoxed by the incident.
‘It’s OK with me, I like people who have a sense of humour and a talent for improvisation,’ he said.

Fraudster strikes national TV station 10.03.2011 16:01 In a bizarre affair that seems more like the plot of a popular movie, national television station TVP has become embroiled in a nepotism scandal that appears to have been entirely masterminded by a 25-year-old charlatan named Pawel Miter.
The complex saga was unfurled by national daily Rzeczpospolita today, Thursday, throwing embarrassing insinuations against TVP, whilst similarly highlighting that the man at the centre of the scandal, Pawel Miter, could serve a prison sentence for fraud.
The affair began on 27 November 2010, when an email from Jacek Michalowski, head of the Presidential Chancellery, arrived in the inbox of the then acting president of TVP, Wlodzimierz Lawniczak.
The mail, which appealed for discretion, proposed a new political program, aimed at 25 – 35 year-olds, and added that “the President would like to draw your attention to a young journalist from Wroclaw named Pawel Miter, who has an idea for this kind of program.”
However, unbeknownst to the director of TVP, the mail was in fact written by Miter himself, who had created a false email address using the @prezydent.pl ending used for official correspondence.
Red Carpet Treatment
The same day he received the message, Mr Lawniczak replied saying that he was “interested in the project.”
The response set in motion a colourful chain of events, in which over a period of two months, the impostor was given the red carpet treatment, winning a lucrative contract of 13,000 zloty per month (the Rzeczpospolita daily states it has a copy of the document), and flunkies serving his whims, which included chauffeur-driven rides that were apparently cleared at the drop of a hat.
“I got the VIP treatment almost immediately,” Miter told the paper.
Miter insists that no one at TVP ever asked for any of his documents at any stage in the process. He says that amongst high-ranking TVP staff, he was always introduced in the same manner: “This is a man from the president’s office.”
Playing with Fire
Test episodes of Miter’s show were apparently due to start filming in early March, according to Rzeczpospolita.
However, on 7 January, Wlodzimierz Lawniczak, acting head of TVP, passed away, following an illness. A month later, on 8 February, Miter’s contract was cancelled.
TVP told Rzeczpospolita that Miter’s program was dropped for a number of reasons. Firstly, that he was “unreliable”, in that he often did not reply to phone calls. Secondly, they cited that when it came to the crunch, a high ranking TVP man, Przemyslaw Wojciechowski, assessed Miter’s project in a negative light. Finally, TVP says it had obtained information that Miter was a charlatan.
Today, now that the project is cancelled, Miter claims that the whole affair was a deliberate exposé.
“From the beginning to the end, it was a provocation from my side,” he told Rzeczpospolita.
“I was able to show that the whole management of TVP fawned over me, just because I had political backing.”
However, Miter could face five years in prison for using a fraudulent email address. Additionally, it has transpired that this is not his first brush with the law.
Meanwhile, TVP claims that Miter tried to blackmail them when matters began to unfold. No charges appear to have been filed as of yet.

Highlanders dodge tax by moving into barns? 13.05.2011 09:04 Highlanders from the Podhale region in southern Poland are wondering whether to move into their stables or barns to get out of paying high tax.
The move may come after by-laws in Poland’s south stipulate that stables, barns, or sheds which used to be for sheltering livestock are now considered to be luxury items.
According to local bureaucrats in the southern resort town of Zakopane, the tax by-law is a relic of the old communist regime in Poland.
However, the result has meant that the taxes paid on such buildings are a few times higher than the actual homes in which the highlanders live. In order to get round this, highlanders may find themselves moving into the barns or sheds to avoid the payments.

Airport spat sparks shutdown 05.07.2011 11:48 Krakow’s airport was shut down for several hours on Monday, with warnings that problems might stretch on for a fortnight after a 17-metre-high crane lurched too close to the runway.
Crane Crane grinds Krakow airport to a halt. Phoot: PAP/Jacek Bednarczyk
The chaos stems from a stand-off between the airport and a private investor who is involved in a construction project neighbouring the terrain of the airport.
A number of flights were cancelled yesterday, whilst several arrivals were redirected to the airports at Katowice and Warsaw.
Urszula Podraza, a spokeswoman for the airport, told Polish Radio that the investor was uncooperative, hence the difficulties.
“Last week we proposed some compromises during a meeting with the investor, allowing for the realisation of the construction, alongside the normal functioning of the airport” she says, adding that the airport’s proposals had been ignored.
However, Piotr Skalski, chairman of the firm leading the construction, claims that the fault was not on his side, insisting that he had proposed a further meeting with airport authorities, but that the suggestion was not taken up. He implied that there was no “good will” from the airport staff.
Krakow airport is currently open, but it is advised that customers check the official portal for updates on the scenario.
