Condoms not for teenagers? thenews.pl 24.04.2009
Rossmann, the popular chemist chain, does not want to sell condoms to young people under eighteen, because the former Children Ombudsman, Ewa Sowinska, asked them not to.
Kacper, a secondary school student from the western city of Poznan, wanted to buy condoms in Rossmann. A cashier asked him to show his ID to prove he was of age. When it turned out Kacper was under eighteen, she refused to sell the item.
The shop manager explained that Rossmann is not allowed to sell condoms to under eighteens on the basis of the letter from the former Children Ombudsman.
"Condoms in Rossmann are not marked "for adults only", so there is no reason to think that they are not available for young people," complains Kacper to the Gazeta Wyborcza daily. His opinion is shared by the current Children's Ombudsman Marek Michalak, who claims that "there is no regulation in Poland, which would prohibit under-age people from buying condoms".
Rossmann's spokesman Roman Lewandowski denies that there is a ban on selling condoms to teenagers in Rossmann's shops. He admits though that two years ago they did receive a letter from the then Children's Ombudsman Ewa Sowinska, a member from the Catholic-nationalis t League of Polish Families.
The letter reads: "On 14 July 2006 a Rossmann shop in Olsztyn sold a condom to a sixteen-years- old girl. It is immoral to sell products which can cause psychological growth disorder to underage children. Rossmann should protect children from demoralization. "
The former Children Ombudsman Ewa Sowinska became a controversial figure after she wanted have experts examine one of the characters in the BBC children's series "Teletubbies" for signs of homosexuality.
Rossmann's spokesman assures that he already sent a letter to all Rossmann's shops, reversing Sowinska's decision and asking cashiers not to sell condoms to underage children. But those over the age of consent should not be affected, which in Poland is 15 years old.

The poll was conducted on 2 - 5 April among 1004 randomly chosen Poles over the age of fifteen.

Climber summits Marriott Hotel in Warsaw in 45 minutes thenews.pl 23.04.2009
A 25-year-old man climbed the Marriott Hotel building in Warsaw yesterday afternoon without any safety equipment within 45 minutes.
The hotel, 140 metres tall, has seen two climbers mount its face. Yesterday's adventurer started his climb during rush hour, at 16:00 on the north side of the building facing Jerusalem Avenue and the Palace of Culture and Sciences.
After 45 minutes, the man, from Sosnowiec, southern Poland, reached the top of the building and was detained immediately by police, but not arrested.
"It is not actually against the law to walk vertically," stated Marcin Szyndler, spokesperson for the capital city police department.
Emergency services were on the scene almost immediately after the man started his climb. The event ended without tragedy, though rescue services were at the ready with a giant safety net and rappelling equipment from the top.
"He obviously wanted to have his five minutes of fame," stated one of the rescue workers. Pawel Fratczak, a fireman on the scene, claimed that all of the emergency services cost several thousand zloty.
Yesterday's climber was not the first to take on the Marriott Hotel. Ten years ago, Dawid Kaszlikowski climbed the hotel as did the famous French `human spider' Alain Robert who is also known for climbing the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Sears Tower in Chicago.www.wiadomosci24.pl/artykul/wspinaczka_na_marriott_95186.html

Old Woman Dies, Then Mysteriously Awakes An old woman from the Polish village Jablonowa was declared dead, however, she awoke a few hours later in a coroner's bag. Javno.hr June 14, 2009
An 84 year old Polish woman from the village of Jablonow near Zwolen, which the doctor from the emergency services declared dead, woke up a few hours later at the morgue, reports the police spokesperson Radomu January Majewski, reports PAP.
The unnamed woman lost consciousness, because of which her husband called an ambulance.
"The doctor confirmed her death, so the family started preparing for her funeral, whilst the funeral company took the body to the morgue. However, a few hours later a morgue worker noticed that the bag was moving and he called a doctor who determined the return of life functions" added Majewski.
The woman was immediately hospitalised in Zwolen, and transferred to the intensive care unit. Her condition was serious on Saturday. The director of the hospital informed the police who have now started an investigation, says the spokesperson.

Two million zloty left to school thenews.pl 09.06.2009
A Polish citizen from the US has left two million zlotys in her will to a school in Bydgoszcz that she graduated from.
Ludwik Kowalski, the headmaster of the Mechanical School no. 1 in the northern city of Bydgoszcz, is delighted at the generous and unexpected gift from the late Maria Ziolkowska. However, he has a problem: the donor stipulated in her will that the money must be spent exclusively on books and computers.
"The school is over a hundred years old and it needs a general overhaul," says Kowalski but assures Mrs. Ziolkowska's request eill be satisfied.
From two million zlotys (600,000 dollars) inheritance the school has already spent half a million zlotys (155,000 dollars). "We opened a new Mechanical and Electronics Engineering faculty, bought textbooks for fifty students, supplied the school library with obligatory reading materials as well as dictionaries, specialist books and bestsellers. Now we have more than sixty modern computers and 1,5 million zlotys more to spend," says Kowalski.
The headmaster would like to use some of the money to build a gym and renovate an old plane it received from the Defence Ministry, an ideal model for learning a vocation. After consulting lawyers, the school found a solution which should satisfy both sides. "We transferred the remaining 1,5 million zlotys to a bank account. The core sum will be spent on books and computers, according to Mrs. Ziolkowska wish, and the interests will cover other expenses," said Kowalski.

Tourists abandon Poland 26.08.2009 09:31 The global finance crisis has eaten into the number of foreign tourists coming to Poland, particularly from the United States. Five and a quarter million foreigners visited Poland in the first half of this year, which is 16 percent less than in the same period in 2008, according to the Institute of Tourism. Only 90,000 Americans visited Poland, a drop off of 27 percent between January and the end of June, 2009. The majority of travelers - three million - came to Poland from western Europe, a 12 percent decline. Most foreign tourists were German (2, 01 million) well ahead of the British (210, 000), the Dutch (170, 000) and Italians (110, 000). As far as visitors from Poland’s Eastern neighbours is concerned, most came from Ukraine then Belarus and Russia. This is the photo that accompanied the article: She appears to be dressed as a nurse? So...how does that relate to tourism? Is it to let you know that someone attractive will take care of you if you get injured or sick in Poland? ;D ;D ;D That was a famous campaign a few years ago. Before Poland`s access to EU, the French expressed fears about Polish blue collar workers coming en masse to France, including Polish plumbers and nurses. Poles have very good opinion in Europe as workers so the French were afraid of losing their jobs. "In retaliation" some Polish tourist organization prepared a France-aimed advertising campaign with a typical Polish plumber I am staying in POland. Visit us!and a typical Polish nurse inviting French tourists to Poland. The campaign was said to be very successful. Read more: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_Plumber

Polish Titanic to reveal secrets?15.09.2009 13:30 Polish divers have explored the wreck of the M/S Pilsudski, a large ocean liner which sank during World War II. After seven months of preparations, Polish divers from the diving club “Walen” managed to reach and explore the shipwreck of M/S Pilsudski, sitting at the bottom of the North Sea. It is the first Polish expedition to the liner which used to be a point of national pride before WW II. “The ship is so big that it is difficult to swim around it at once,” said Slawomir Kruzolek, a member of the diving crew. M/S Pilsudski (later renamed ORP Pilsudski), named after Jozef Pilsudski, leader of the Polish independence movement in 1918, was originally a luxury liner and was converted to practical uses during wartime. The ship was over 160 meters long, 21.5 metres wide, she had seven decks and could accommodate 800 passengers and 350 crew members. M/S Pilsudski was built in 1935 in Trieste, Italy and the Polish government paid for it with 2-and-a-half year supply of coal to heat up the entire nation. The ship sank on 26 November 1939 during her first wartime voyage – the exact cause is unknown but speculation points to German underwater mines. The M/S Pilsudski was supposed to sail along the coast of Great Britain, passing by a mine field, to Cape Town in the Republic of South Africa and then on to New Zealand. At 5.36 CET, after two explosions, the ship sank with 200 Polish soldiers on board. The shipwreck is sitting in 30 metres in the North Sea bed, 50 km from Yorkshire. Outraged Poles tear down posters AFP October 2, 2009
Warsaw - A Polish arts festival said on Thursday its attempt to trigger serious historical debate through posters of naked women fighting backfired when self-declared "public morality" defenders ripped them down.
The images, displayed in the streets of the eastern city of Lublin as part of a theatre festival, were meant to represent the tumultuous relationship between Poland and Russia, according to festival director Janusz Oprynski.
Around 12 images of two women attacking one another and exchanging insults, which the director said was a "provocative allegory" to fit in with the festival's theme of Russian art.
The posters were by Russian artists The Blue Nose Group, known for their controversial works, the director said.
But some people were so shocked by the posters they decided to rip them from the city's streets, the director said.
"People claiming to defend public morality have destroyed everything," Oprynski lamented.
The director has not, however, been deterred from his goal of using pictures of nude women to stir debate on the often difficult relationship between Poland and Russia.
"Fortunately, we have already been able to print the posters again," he said.
"They will be put up again on Thursday, and will be better protected."
Lublin's theatre festival this year brings together 18 theatre companies as well as film directors, visual artists and musicians. Many participants come from former Soviet countries and Japan.
