Is this forum interested in this kind of news? In case it is... The Belgian government collapsed today, it seems it is but doesn`t show this interest. hahaha Well, government rise and fall like empires in history. Nothing special anymore. Some government don`t fall, though they should have long ago. E.g., in Russia or Belarus. Well, for goodness' sake, I got excited when I first saw this because I thought Tufta was back....It was a real disappointment when I realized he wasn't.

A little improvement - while getting close to the bottom of a long page inside a thread, you can click TOP button to quickly get to the top of it again. There is a box directing me to click a link and go to Cloudinary Upload Setting section. Then, the next line says "Click here to dismiss this dialog forever." Will I regret it if I dismiss the dialog forever?

People or even our ancient ancestors like hominids decided to live together in groups, communes, communities, societies and nations in order to survive and then develop a better quality of life. Laws were introduced to enhance this quality. Anybody who openly proclaims disregard for their democratic country`s laws breaches the group`s norms and endangers its welfare so they should be considered outlaws and dealt with as ones. And they were dealt with so. Except I never heard anymore about them, so I don't know the final outcome. Maybe I'll try to research it and report what I find.

To answer your question whether native English speakers understand everything, I can answer from my own perspective: regarding this video I do understand it all, but only because I have been exposed to this "dialect" during much of my life from watching TV in my earlier years, as well as from a couple of people I have come in contact with. Though it is funny, the manner of speaking does grate on my sensibilities after awhile, but that's mainly because I like everything, especially speech and grammar, to be correct whereas some people would not be bothered by it, but would only see the humor in it. I can understand why you are having trouble understanding it, and I hope you will not try too hard to master it, lest you find yourself taking on this manner of speaking. The parents of your students would not be amused!

Bonobo, Thanks for starting the snowflakes without being reminded! Nature reminded me about it. It has been a little snowy here for a week now. Welcome to winter!

I guess so, but men don't feel the same way about all women, do they? Don't they feel closer to their favorites? Who or what is favourites? ? ? ? ? Do you mean this person: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favourite ? No...I didn't mean that kind of favorite. I was only using the word in the usual sense of liking something or someone more than others. It's human nature, and it is the underlying factor that draws humans to certain people more than to others. Those they prefer to spend time with are their "favorites." There are some people we all find ourselves avoiding because we don't like to be in their presence.
One can also have "favorites" in the categories of foods, music, artists, forums, academic subjects, books, sports, etc.

The truck was only borrowed from his employer to perform a certain task and then was being returned in the morning... But he can endow all trucks with that antropomorphic attitude. I guess so, but men don't feel the same way about all women, do they? Don't they feel closer to their favorites?

Did he just make a liar out of me?? I think perhaps he did! No, he didn`t. He only personalised, or even antropomorphised it coz he is so fond of his female truck. The same motif appears in Polish literature: a moronic soldier, NCO from the Deluge, says: I am Mr Kowalski and this is Mrs Kowalska, pointing to his saber. Well, that is a slight comfort for me. Your comparison to the example in The Deluge does fall apart however when one learns that this young neighbor of mine does not have that kind of marital emotional connection to this truck as the soldier did to his saber. Rather this relationship is more of a "one-night stand" if you know that expression. The truck was only borrowed from his employer to perform a certain task and then was being returned in the morning...

I know some which have:) ships, cars, countries and Death. Ships...yes, okay. Cars, I'm not so sure of, or countries. Death, yes, when it is being referred to as the "Grim Reaper." Cars and countries, I believe, are usually referred to as "it." Hahaha...yesterday my next-door neighbor, a young man who works doing some kind of construction or such using heavy machinery rang our doorbell. When I opened the door, he said he just wanted to let me know that the huge truck which was parked in front of my house was only there temporarily and he would be moving it in the morning. He said, "SHE'LL be gone in the morning, I promise." He was being so nice in not wanting to be a nuisance, that I decided not to tell him he should have said, "IT will be gone in the morning..." Did he just make a liar out of me?? I think perhaps he did!

Okay...I'll try to try, but you know I'm technologically challenged. Any translator I've ever tried feeds me back nonsense... When in Chrome, click Customise and Control icon in the top right corner, then Settings, then Advanced and then Languages where you can choose the language you prefer. Okay, so I got as far as Languages, then what? It's set on my computer as English...isn't that the language I want things translated TO? Or should I set Polish? This stuff confuses me...

Did he succeed in destroying it? Of course not. Satanic forces have always failed in Poland. The legend says the boulder was so heavy three devils had to carry it and it took them a long time. When the dawn broke, the sun blinded them and they dropped the boulder. Another legend says that the nuns prayed so earnestly that God sent female pidgeons to surround and attack the devil, so he was forced to let go of the boulder. In both cases it fell onto the meadow. I like both versions. I always enjoy the triumph of good over evil!

I always told my students in Poland (when teaching English) that an animal was an 'it' unless it has a name, in which case, he or she. I think this is a good general rule to teach to students of English, but there are exceptions. At least in the U.S., again, I don't know about England, cows are referred to as "she" and bulls as "he" since those terms, cow and bull, in themselves refer to what gender the animal is; with most other animals, the gender may not be as clear. Another example: hen and rooster.

I don't think I have heard the U.S. referred to as "she" or "he," Because you are a collection of States so it is impossible to become he or she when there are so many. Correct!

It seems to me that it is risky to encourage insects to congregate in large numbers in a particular area. Hmmm...I think it's better to let nature take its course providing insects with hotels. I think, though, that there are probably some hotels in New York City that might qualify as insect hotels due to their populations of Cockroaches! Why risky? I have never seen such a hotel sieged by birds or other predators. Humans have to aid nature in so many ways that one more doesn`t matter, really. Yes, due to that cockroach invasion I fled NYC and didn`t stop until I found a safe haven in Poland. | I said it was risky because it encourages insects to congregate in one place. Infestations of some kinds of insects can be annoying (and even possibly dangerous) for people in the area. My thought is that there are enough natural "insect hotels" made by the insects themselves, and that's probably how nature intended it to be.

A funny video? Maybe it was because I didn't understand what was said in Polish, but watching it certainly wasn't a fun experience! Jeanne,
It wasn't a very funny video for me, due to the misogynistic context, but I understood that it was a parody like Bo states. It is ironical or cynical or sarcastic sense of humor against male chauvinist pigs who use their wives, girlfriends, daughters or female colleagues or friends like second hand citizens or like objects they can abuse like they will.
This of course is not only a Polish problem, but a European problem, South-American (Femicides) problem and a world problem.
Agression and violence against women at home, on the street and at their work places is a problem. Most often portrayed by men, but sometimes also instigated by self hating women who hit at other women or manipulate men to attack other women. You have a lot of deviant, perverted and pyschotic creeps in the world unfortunately.
I don't endorse this video as funny, but it shows the violence against women in a graphic nature.
Cheers, Pieter
Unfortunately jealous men or boys also kill, abuse or harass women or girls in European countries, the USA, the Russian Federation, the Arab world, India and Southern-America. In the video you see Honduras and Colombia, but Femicide takes place in many more Latin American and South-American countries. Also in Mexico.
Pieter, I didn't for a minute think you were saying the video was funny...I knew you would not think that. I think this shows how careful we have to be on social media and digital communication to make ourselves clear. While people often use sarcasm when speaking with someone in person and that person is able to discern the ironic meaning of the person's speech, the same isn't true virtually. My lack of knowledge of the Polish language prevented me from having a solid understanding of the intent of the video, and that's just a dangerous thing to have happen given the nature of the subject of that particular video! Jeanne

I can see them here and there, in parks or even public lawns. A giant hotel was built in Warsaw recently which broke the Guiness book record: I have been thinking of building some on our farm but I constantly lack time. Besides, there are so many opportunities for insects to find shelter on the premises that building one is senseless. If I do it, it will be for kids` educational purposes. I'm kind of puzzled about this "Insect Hotel" concept. And then, there are the ever-abundant Bed Bugs as well...

Is it said in English? You shouldn`t eat with your mouth full. I always thought it was a mistake and changed it into talk years ago, but now that I see it again, I wonder if I was right. I think you are correct, the common use is "Don't talk with your mouth full." I haven't really heard the other version.

This is the original wording by Shakespeare, so I wouldn't call it a "translation." I meant a real translation into Polish. What do you mean by "back translation?" I don't know that expression. It was my idea to translate back from the most known Polish translation into English. hahaha poor attempt to capture the same meaning as the first with rather flat and unlyrical language. I am so sorry. hahaha I'm sure poor Shakespeare is turning over in his grave! I'm assuming you know that expression...

Cars and countries, I believe, are usually referred to as "it." Probably in your area only??? N-o-o-o. . .in general. If you were paying close attention, you would have noticed that in a prior post I said, "...we Americans..." I'm referring to American English here...certainly not British English. I don't think I have heard the U.S. referred to as "she" or "he," for that matter, but the U.S. is frequently spoken of as "Uncle Sam," and then of course, the masculine is used.

Cars and countries, I believe, are usually referred to as "it." Probably in your area only??? No, not just in my area! Some people I know, particularly men who are really fond on their cars, might refer to their cars as "she." But there is no general use of gender for cars in American English. I really haven't heard of countries being referred to as "she." Can you give me an example of what you have heard or come across in your reading?
