There are various test to find out about oneself. Here is one of them.
I took it for myself, changed my answers into bold.
Are You An Alcoholic?
You might like to take the following test, developed by the World Health Organisation. To calculate your score add the figures up in the left-hand column. A score of eight or more suggests a drink problem.
1.How often do you drink alcohol?
(0) Never (1) Monthly (2) 2-4 times a month (3) 2-3 times a week (4) 4 or more times a week
2.How many units of alcohol do you drink on a typical day?
(0) 1 or 2 (1) 3 or 4 (2) 5 or 6 (3) 7, 8 or 9 (4) 10 or more
3.How often do you have six or more units of alcohol on one occasion?
(0) Never (1) Less than monthly (2) Monthly (3) Weekly (4) Daily or almost daily
4.How often during the last year have you found that you were not able to stop drinking once you had started?
(0) Never (1) Less than monthly (2) Monthly (3) Weekly (4) Daily or almost daily
5. How often during the last year have you failed to do what was expected of you because of drinking?
(0) Never (1) Less than monthly (2) Monthly (3) Weekly (4) Daily or almost daily
6. How often during the last year have you needed a drink first thing in the morning to get yourself going after a heavy drinking session?
(0) Never (1) Less than monthly (2) Monthly (3) Weekly (4) Daily or almost daily
7. How often during the last year have you felt guilt or remorse after drinking?
(0) Never (1) Less than monthly (2) Monthly (3) Weekly (4) Daily or almost daily
8. How often during the last year have you been unable to remember what happened the night before because you had been drinking?
(0) Never (1) Less than monthly (2) Monthly (3) Weekly (4) Daily or almost daily
9. Have you or someone else been injured as a result of your drinking?
(0) No (2) Yes, but not in the last year (3) Yes, during the last year
10. Has a relative, friend, doctor or health worker been concerned about your drinking or suggested you cut down?
(0) No (2) Yes, but not in the last year (3) Yes, during the last year
As you can see, I got barely 6 points, though it started dramatically, with 4 points in question No 1.
That means I am not an alcoholic.
Yes, I drink everyday. Wine mostly, but also a lot of beer. I drink vodka too but only with my relatives who visit us about 4 times a year.
I never drink whisky, gin, brandy and other perfume alcohols.

Hmm, it seems there are other tests. Check off Yes or No after each question then add your score at the bottom. Yes No 1. Do you lose time from work due to drinking? 2. Is drinking making your home life unhappy? 3. Do you ever drink because you are shy with other people? 4. Is drinking affecting your reputation? 5. Have you ever felt remorse after drinking? 6. Have you ever gotten into financial difficulties as a result of drinking? 7. Do you turn to lower companions and an inferior environment when drinking? 8. Does your drinking make you careless of your family's welfare? 9. Has your ambition decreased since drinking? 10. Do you crave a drink at a definite time daily? 11. Do you want a drink the next morning? 12. Does drinking cause you to have difficulty in sleeping? 13. Has your efficiency decreased since drinking? 14. Is drinking jeopardizing your job or business? 15. Do you drink to escape from worries or trouble? 16. Do you drink alone? Yes 17. Have you ever had a complete loss of memory as a result of drinking? 18. Has your physician ever treated you for drinking? 19. Do you drink to build up your self confidence? 20. Have you ever been to a hospital or institution on account of drinking? TOTAL 1 I got 1 point for drinking alone. Why is it treated as a sign? When I drink with friends, it doesn`t count?

Leo Benhaaker, a Dutch coach of Polish national soccer teacm, said in an interview: Poles are fools. They start drinking vodka at 10 am.
I think he meant Polish alcoholics, of course. I don`t know normal Poles who drink so strong booze so early.

A 25ml pub measure of spirit at 40% is one unit
One small (125 ml) glass of wine at 9% is one unitI usually drink a glass of 250ml of my strong home-made wine. The strength measures about 15%. It gives 3 units on average.

This is one of the first topics in the forum. Shed a tear....
I have stopped drinking. I am very happy because I thought I was really addicted. I drank one beer or a glass of wine every evening (sometimes more). Yes, I attributed it to my problems with sleep, that a dose of booze let me sleep better, but you know those excuses - all bottle huggers use some, hundreds of them. But now I haven`t drunk for 10 days and feel quite well. Do I really have such strong wills? I didn`t know about it.
PS. It helped that my home-wine supply had given out in April. And after a temporary booze shopping spree, I said: basta! No more money wasted! Another help is that I am so mean.... ;D ;D ;D ;D
Now I am looking at first seasonal fruit, strawberries, on stalls and dreaming of making home-wine again when cherries come out. I can`t stop thinking about it....
Shit, I must be a wino after all!!!!

Don't fail, you know you can do it. And look at all the extra cash you will now have. Also, when you go to a party, you will remember what you did, and to who.

Bo, I suspected at one point in my life I was an alcoholic. I was counseled by a good friend that I was not an alcoholic. I was in fact just a drunk. When I asked him to explain the difference, He informed me that alcoholics go to A.A. meetings. Drunks do not.

As a general rule, If you need a drink, You have a drinking problem. I myself had a problem and was blessed with victory! I hope the same for you.

I am not alone!!!
Poles drink less vodka Polish Radio 25.05.2009
Vodka sales in Poland have dropped by one third, according to the Polish Spirit Industry organization.
In the first quarter of 2009, Poles bought 21,1 million litres of spirit products (a 75 percent drop in vodka, specifically) , which is almost 30 percent less than a year ago.
The sudden drop in vodka sales is a result of the rise of excise tax by nine percent since the beginning of 2009.
Beer producers also quoted a sales decline. In the first quarter of 2009, the sale of beer in Poland dropped by one tenth in comparison with the same period last year. Unlike high-proof spirits, the fall of demand for beer was not caused by higher excise tax.
"Beer sale in Poland has been decreasing since 2008," claims Melania Popiel from Carlsberg Polska. She predicts that, in 2009, the demand for beer in Poland might be even five percent lower than in 2008.
In 2008, the spirit industry lost 61 million zlotys (14 million euros) because of currency swap and financial recession.

Poles drink more alcohol as they enjoy higher wages and have easier access to alcoholic beverages. A government report shows that the average Pole consumes 20 litres of vodka and 130 litres of beer a year and the amount of alcohol consumed by Poles increases year-to-year. In 2001, the average Pole drank 6.6 litres of pure alcohol, in 2006 – 8.8 litres, in 2007 – 9.2 litres and in 2008 – 9.6 litres. Higher salaries, cheaper alcohol prices and an enormous amount of liquor shops are the reason why the consumption of alcohol in Poland has increased, shows the report. According to the State Agency for Solving Alcohol-Related Problems, there is an average of one liquor shop per 1200 people in Poland. However, in many cities and towns, the number of liquor shops is much higher. In the popular resort town of Ciechocinek, there is one liquor shop per every 49 customers and in the winter resort town of Karpacz – one liqueur shop per 14 inhabitants. In 2008, an excise tax on alcohol earned 9.3 billion zloty (2.27 billion euro) for the state budget. Almost the same amount of money is spent annually on medical treatment for people with alcohol-related diseases.
