Katyn “deserved revenge”? Created: 25.08.2008 15:09
“Stalin was an efficient leader, not a murderer. The killing of Polish officers in Katyn was a well-deserved revenge,“ will be the new official historical theory taught in Russian schools.
Before the opening of the new school year, the Russian Academy of Qualification Improvement and Professional Retraining of Education Employees has released guidelines for teachers regarding the history syllabus in schools.
From now on, Russian pupils will be informed that some 22,000 Polish officers were indeed killed by the NKVD in Katyn in 1940, but the act was fully justified and “politically suitable”, reports a Moscow-based liberal, but pro-government daily newspaper Vremya Novostei.
Russian teachers will also explain to their school children that the Katyn massacre was carried out “in response to the killing of thousands of Red Army soldiers in Polish captivity after the war of 1920 [between Poland and the Soviet Union], initiated by Poland, not the USSR".
Purges and acts of ethnic cleansing, killing millions, carried out on Stalin’s orders were simply "efficient endeavours” of the leader getting the country ready for the forthcoming war.
The Katyn massacre has been a running sore between Warsaw and Moscow. On March 5, 1940, Joseph Stalin signed a decree to murder Polish Army officers taken captive after the Red Army invasion of Poland in 1939. The officers, made up of Poland's intellectual elite, were systematically shot from April till May 1940 in Katyn, Charkov and Tarnow.
The information about mass graves in Katyn was made public by the Germans on April 13, 1943. Two days later, the Soviets blamed the massacre on the Nazis.
After an investigation of over a decade in length, Moscow refused to name the massacre as a war crime nor, as the Polish side alleges, was it genocide. No prosecutions have ever been made against the NKVD officers involved in the slaughter. (mj)

We can never know to much, on this bad thing. I wish I knew more, and will try and learn more.
This was a very bad time for the Polish, and we as Americans, must never let something like this go on again, I know, I will try and stop it, if I can.
But like in Georgia, we need others behind us, to force this action to stop this going ons. We, the Americans, can not, even with trying, go on being the guard to the world, we need others to help, like Poland did in the war we are now in.

Tunnels show Hitler's megalomaniac vision 26 August 2008 Wasted News Three vast tunnels were opened under central Berlin this month, giving a glimpse of Adolf Hitler’s megalomaniac vision of a new architectural centre for the capital of Nazi Germany.
The 16-metre (50-foot) deep tunnels were constructed in 1938 as part of an underground transport network beneath a series of bombastic buildings designed by Nazi architect Albert Speer, including the biggest domed hall the world had ever seen.
The overground plans, never completed because of World War Two, included boulevards, squares and huge buildings, such as an arch dwarfing the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and the 290-metre high Great Hall, with room for 180,000 people.
Hitler called the concept, a symbol of the power of the Third Reich, “Berlin — the capital of the world” but in recent times it has come to be known as “Germania.”
The tunnels, between 90 and 220 meters long lying beneath the Tiergarten park, would have accommodated roads and a railway line.
“The tunnels — which are in surprisingly good condition — were part of Speer’s grand plans, what we now call ‘Germania’,” historian Dietmar Arnold, head of the Berlin Underground Association and bunker tour guide, told Reuters.
Last week, Arnold — who runs an exhibition of Hitler’s plans — took journalists on a rare visit into the dank tunnels.
They are closed to the public most of the time because of safety concerns, but visits can be arranged.
“The acoustics are incredible,” said Arnold, who likes singing a note and hearing it reverberate around him.
After the war, British forces in divided Berlin closed the tunnels. They were rediscovered in 1969 but have remained shut. In 1990, a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, they were handed to the city of Berlin.
The Berlin Underground Association, set up in 1997, has seen a surge in interest in tours of Berlin’s remaining bunkers.
Although most were destroyed, some of the maze of 1,000 World War Two bunkers are intact and serve as a reminder of the city’s violent history.
Propaganda posters and escape instructions on the walls convey a sense of the past. In one bunker, suitcases, helmets, and uniforms from various sites are on show.
“Interest is constantly growing — we have about 150,000 visitors a year to the bunkers,” said Arnold. “That is partly why we want the bunkers to be protected — they are an important part of the history of Berlin.”
By the end of the war, Germany’s most heavily bombed city could protect up to 800,000 people in its bunkers.

Poland Witnesses Huge Dive in Hog Numbers Thursday, August 28, 2008
POLAND - The last time the number of hogs in Poland was this low was back in 1984. As a result, bankruptcies are expected.
By the end of March, there were 15.7m of hogs in Poland. While the situation has been somewhat bad for many years, it is expected to get worse. Experts have no doubts about how soon many meat companies will go bankrupt and prices will be heightened.
“The decrease is dramatic. On the one hand it’s caused by falling hog prices, on the other – by growing feeder prices. Many farmers gave up raising animals. Many sows were killed so it may take up to two years to reach former levels of hog,” Jerzy Majchrzak from Sokolow meat producer said.
In addition, cheap meat from the EU replaces Polish products, according to Puls Biznesu.
“The situation of Polish meat companies is very hard. The strongest ones will survive. We may expect many bankruptcies this year, especially of slaughter companies. There are over 1,000 of them in Poland while there is enough place for several hundreds only”, Wieslaw Rozanski, the CEO of the Union of Meat Industry Producers and Employers commented.
Hog prices will grow as well. The Agency of Agricultural Market expects that at the end of this year, pork prices will have grown 30 percent against 2007.

Michael Jackson to help Polish children? Created: 29.08.2008 12:37 Controversial pop star Michael Jackson wants to commemorate his 50th birthday today by sponsoring school equipment for the poorest of Poland’s children.
Michael Jackson will distribute the gifts via his Polish fans, who will celebrate their idol’s 50th birthday at the fifth annual “MJowisko” event in Lodz, central Poland, tomorrow.
“We expect about a hundred children to attend our event to commemorate the King of Pop’s birthday”, said Kinga Zaborowska, the organiser of the event, quoted on the TVP Info web site.
The festivities of Jacko’s fans will include a competition for the best performer of Jackson’s moonwalk dance. The fans will also cut a birthday cake and watch the film “Ghosts”, featuring their idol.
In spite of its small-scale, the Polish “MJowisko” event is one of the most respected and recognised events among Michael Jackson’s fans worldwide.
“We are usually compared to similar events in Los Angeles and London. Last year we got a special letter from Michaela, thanking us for the memory about his birthday”, admitted Zaborowska.
Michael Jackson is said to be spending his birthday at home, alone today. He will thank his fans for remembering about the special day in a press announcement to be published today.
Some years ago Jackson was said to be looking in to opening a theme park in Warsaw but the plans never came to fruition. (mj)

Wow, two sights I would have loved to have seen!!...Solidarity flags entering Czestochowa I don`t have a photo in the album but the crystal clear view in my mind`s eyes is enough. When they invent photo impression mind readers, I will be able to show you. Not so much as I have been regularly shaving my head bald for summer for recent years. Or I adopt other hairdos. I can sho you one day. I am serious. Have you ever doubted that? I was only 18 years old so it was more like an adventure, e..g., we slept in farmers` barns on hay, sth really unusual, I don`t know if it is still practised today. and a chance to be with friends, meet new faces.... But at some moments it turned spiritual. Till today I say prayers for certain lady who hosted us with dinner at her house, and her diseased husband.

This brainwashing is really terrible. In the past many people in Russia fell for that propaganda about Stalin - good Uncle Joe. Now there will be more. What a pity that such intelligent people as Russians will have to eat this crap.

His propensity to Polish kids is somehow connected with this desire ..... Does Jackson want to be a hero, like Kosciuszko? www.ckuradom.pl/Pliki%20patron/patron1.jpg

Poland marks 69th anniversary of World War II
Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk has marked 69 years since the September 1, 1939 attack by Nazi Germany on a Polish military base at Westerplatte, near Gdansk that sparked World War II.
"Next year, the representatives of European states will meet here to remind the world and their people of the events of 1939," Mr Tusk said during the ceremonies.
The 70th anniversary of the Second World War in 2009 will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the demise of communism in Poland and central Europe in 1989.
Memories of war remain strong in Poland. Current estimates suggest some five million Polish citizens died during the war, including three million Jews. Polish history books have long claimed six million victims of the war.
Following the end of the war in 1945, the four World War II Allies shifted Poland's borders to the west, giving it eastern German territories while the Soviet Union absorbed the northern part of Germany's East Prussia region and pre-war eastern Polish territories which now belong to Belarus and Ukraine.
Attacked by Nazi Germany from the west on September 1, 1939, Poland was invaded from the east by the Soviet Union a few days later, on September 17.
The two totalitarian powers carved up Poland under the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, a secret agreement concluded between Nazi German dictator Adolf Hitler and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

Paralysed man seeks to end life legally Created: 02.09.2008 13:01
Left paralyzed after a motorcycle accident 30 years ago, Hieronim Sadlowski no longer wants to be a burden for his family and has decided to write to the president and ask to be euthanized.
Sadlowski says his life has become a nightmare. For three years now, he permanently stays in bed and can not get up at all. Despite the medical treatment he has received, his condition continues to worsen. Additionally, Sadlowski’s family situation makes receiving proper care difficult.
The man knows that he has little chances to get permission to undergo euthanasia, which is illegal in Poland. Yet, as he sees no other hope, he still wants to write to President Lech Kaczynski.
Sadlowski is following the example of another completely-paralysed man from Poland who, by writing to the head of state asking for a permission to be disconnected from an artificial respirator, managed to attract the attention of the media and get help.
Following the media coverage, Janusz Switaj, also left paralysed after a motorcycle accident, was given a special wheelchair which allowed him to leave home and was even offered a job by Anna Dymna, Polish celebrity and head of the a charity foundation Mimo Wszystko (Against the Odds).
Hieronim Sadlowski’s appeal has already had some effect. Local social services increased his financial aid and have provided a psychologist to support the bedridden men. Additionally, Anna Dymna and her charity organization have taken an interest in the case. (jm)

Archeological dig unearths old woman Created: 02.09.2008 12:44
The remains of a 30-year-old woman were found today at an archeological excavation in Pinczow, Poland, in the Swietokrzyska region. The body, identified as female, dates back 6,500 years.
The director of the dig, Przemyslaw Duleba, from the Institute of Archeology at the University of Warsaw, stated that this is the oldest discovery every to be found in this region. “The skeleton of the young woman is perfectly preserved and laid on her left side in an embryonic position.”
Duleba says that this skeleton provides evidence as to the funereal rites of the people that lived on this land in that era. These people were the first agrarians to settle in this area, and they originally are from the Danube River region of Europe.
This archeological dig has been open for eight years and archaeologists have found bone fragments, metal bits, and ceramic pieces among other things. Last month, another dig in the region turned up dinosaur fossils that have proved to be a predecessor to the Tyrannosaurus Rex. (mmj)

At least that's what my Catholic upbringing taught me. Every adult should have a living will and make sure another competent person or attorney has a copy. This will help assure that your wishes, not someone else's are followed. Some people opt to be kept on life support, but more often than not the majority choose to die with dignity should they be in a condition of little hope for recovery.

It would not be good to keep someone on life support when the mind is dead. But we must not, also, put people to death, since they are old, or sick, since many can come back to good health. We can't be the judge, when someone is to die, that is God's job, and only his.

My father told me what he wants me to do in the event that machines are keeping him alive. I told him that if he wants his wishes to be honored, they need to be in a living will. Hard to even think about it, though.

'Sexist' witch burning banned Ananova, UK 9/5/08
Government busybodies have ordered a medieval village to drop a witch burning drama from its birthday pageant - because it's too sexist.
The spectacular blaze - featuring dummy witches - was to have been the highlight of the fair to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the ancient Polish village, Zielona Gora.
The witch-burning was planned as part of a medieval fair featuring jousting knights and minstrels this weekend.
But Polish women's rights groups and government ministers have banned the display after protests that the stake-burning drama was anti-feminist.
"Making peoples' tragic deaths into a tourist attraction is reprehensible and regrettable, " said Monika Platek, head of Poland's Association for Legal Education.
"The stakes where women were burned were the result of profound misogyny, discrimination against women and ignorance."
Poland's women's ministry boss Berenika Anders told the town council it had to scrap the witch sessions.

The shortage of nurses is a problem that the U.S. faces as well. It will most likely get worse as the baby boomer population ages and the need for more health care grows. Is there a strong interest in the medical field - nursing in particular - in Poland? What things do/do not attract people to this career choice? Crisis in Poland’s hospitals Created: 02.09.2008 11:00 Spurred by widespread picketing, the Department of Health Services is undergoing reforms that would change the minimum number of nurses required on shifts. Poland’s medical field is experiencing a shortage of nurses, with sometimes two nurses on an afternoon shift that normally demands four.
“Dziennik Polski” reports that, in the last fours years, approximately 7700 nurses have left the country seeking work abroad. This points to a greater problem than simply work stress.
The Professional Union of Nurses and Midwifes (ZZPP) is pushing to change the law. Their secretary, Grazyna Gaj, points out that in most European Union countries, the mandate is a minimum of one nurse to eight patients.
Current mandates regarding the minimum number of required healthcare providers on shift date back to 1999 and fall short of reality. Many hospitals in the Warsaw region report that they have as little as one nurse to forty patients on a night shift. (mmj)thenews.pl
