Polish children some of the most tech-savvy in Europe thenews.pl 18.12.2008
Children in Poland have been ranked among the most modern in Europe – as many as 72 percent of 10-year-olds use the Internet everyday and almost half of them possess a mobile phone.
According to the newest Eurobarometer survey, in recent years Poland has advanced to the group of ten countries with the largest proportion of children possessing a mobile, as well as using the Internet everyday.
Only three years ago the youngest Poles between six and 17 years of age were at the rear of the ranking: only 32 percent of children had their own cell phone, while the European average was 36 percent. Today as many as 75 percent of Polish kids possess their own mobile.
This result is better than among kids in Germany (63 percent), Great Britain (58 percent) or France (50 percent).
Almost 42 percent of Polish 6-10-year-olds have also their own camera. The European average is only 26.5 percent. In Germany 32 percent of kids possess a camera, in Great Britain 24 percent and in France only seven percent.
Young Poles are also among the most eager to use the Internet every day – as 72 percent children does so. For comparison in Italy its only 34 percent.
I've read studies that indicate that cell phones can be injurious to the developing brains of children. Has anyone else read that? And what do those of you with young children do...do any of your young kids have their own phones?

And what do those of you with young children do...do any of your young kids have their own phones? No cell phones for our kids, though some of my eight-year-old's friends have them. It seems a bit ridiculous to "need" a cell phone at that age. They are not allowed to use them on the bus or at school.

Over 100, 000 people brazed freezing conditions welcoming in the New Year in Warsaw's Constitution Square to the tunes of Abba hits performed by some of Poland's top stars, joined for the occasion by Bjorn Again from Britain and the Abbacapella group from Germany. Open- air concerts and parties were also held in Krakow and several other Polish cities. In Krakow, some 60, 000 people gathered in the Market Square were entertained by
the British vocalist Leona Lewis. In the early morning hours, in one of the city's student hostels a young man attacked three men and two women with a broken bottle and jumped out of a third-floor window. In Augustow, north-eastern Poland, a 24 year-old man lost two arms and suffered serious injuries in a fireworks explosion. In a similar incident in Lublin, a 25 year-old man lost two fingers.
An estimated quarter of a million people are in the Tatra resort of Zakopane for the New Year and the long weekend. Skiing conditions are described as excellent.
Ten people were killed and 104 suffered injuries in 89 road accidents on New Year's Eve. Police have detained 172 drivers

Celtic Treasures Tuesday, December 30, 2008 Granyna Zawada The Krakow Post
A fragment of a bracelet discovered at the site A 3rd to 2nd century BC Celtic village was discovered four miles east of Krakow. Archaeologists from the Krakow Highway Exploration Team (Krakowski Zespol do Badan Autostrad) had been exploring it during preparatory archaeological works done on the future A4 highway premises.
The archaeologists managed to explore almost the entire area of the village, which is unique in Poland. They found treasured coins, jewellery and everyday articles, thanks to which they will be able to reconstruct the life and fate of the Celts in the Malopolska district and make valuable scientific discoveries.
"The most valuable achievement from an archaeological point of view is being able to explore the whole village, as seldom if ever do we have an opportunity to search through such an enormous, 10 acre area," says Karol Dzingielewski, the head archaeologist of the team.
"Thanks to this we were able to recognise the layout of 17 huts, as well as their structure and chronological order. Also, some glass objects that we found are of great significance, because fragile glass jewellery was prone to fashion. When a bracelet broke, a Celtic woman would get a new one, according to the latest fashion. Now, when we find pieces of bracelets we can track changing fashions and so more precisely date the place it was found in," explains Dzingielewski.
The Celts were originally a Germanic people, living in the area of today's southern Germany, France, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria, and they were well known for their technical achievements, especially processing metal and pottery. In 280-277 BC they invaded the northern part of the Balkan Peninsula, but had to pull out north. According to the archaeologists' theory some of them went through the Moravian lands (now part of the Czech Republic) to Malopolska in the 3rd century BC, before any Slavic tribe got here. Ma?opolska was at that time a largely depopulated area and the Celts could settle there and keep their customs and culture. It was this community that introduced money to what is now the area of Poland. Most likely they traded furs, amber, forest goods and honey.
The Celts migrated out of the Krakow area probably around the 2nd to the 1st century BC, likely joining a great Germanic migration that took place at that time. They left behind pieces of bracelets and glass beads imported from other Celtic tribes living in the south, as well as iron tools - among which was one of the oldest pair of scissors. It is owing to a great accumulation of found items that the scientists can specify the chronology of the Malopolska Celts.
Having been catalogued and inventoried, the findings will be shown in a multimedia exhibition in Krakow's Archaeological Museum; however the exact date is not yet known.

First Polish woman to sail globe lands in Panama tomorrow! Created: 06.01.2009 12:57Two days and four hundred nautical miles are left until the first Polish female finishes her solo sail around the world.Joanna Pajkowska, who has been at sea for 196 days, has a clear chance of breaking the standing Polish record for an around-the-world sail of 344 days.
Pajkowska is set to arrive at port in Panama on 7 January, where she started her journey on 24 June 2008. If she does actually arrive tomorrow as planned, not only will she be the first Polish female but also one of very few women internationally to have completed such a journey.
The Pole’s fiancée, Aleksander Nebelski told tvp.info that “I called her yesterday and she was happy and full of energy. She told me that she doesn’t yet want to finish her sail and she is not in a hurry to dock on land.” Nebelski is on his way to Panama to greet Pajkowska when she arrives.
“To sail the world solo has been her wildest dream and I am proud of Joanna and her accomplishment. When I asked her what she needs now, what I should bring her, she asked for… a dress,” added the proud fiancée.
Joanna Pajkowska is sailing the world on an 8.5 metre yacht, the “Mantra Asia,” which was designed and built by the Pole Andrzej Arminski. The route that she has taken will have put 120,000 nautical miles behind her.
The Pole has not docked at a port once during her journey. The first and most-renowned female ever to do so was the British Ellen McArthur, who sailed the globe in almost two-and-a-half months.
Previous Polish sailors to have completed an around-the-world journey were Henryk Jaskula, who took 344 days, and Tomasz Lewandowski, who took a year-and-a-half – both over twenty years ago. (mmj) (photo: mantra28.pl)

Likes and dislikes geographically oriented Polish Radio 02.01.2009
Slovaks and Britons are the nationals most favoured by Poles. A recent survey conducted by the CBOS polling station showed that the above mentioned have an over 50% declaration of sympathy. Next to follow are Americans, Frenchmen, the Irish and Scandinavians, whilst the least liked are Russians, the Romanies, Arabs and Germans. The CBOS researchers point that the likes and dislikes are dictated by geographical locations. It is clear that the sympathies are well directed towards the west while drop with the approach towards Poland's eastern or south eastern borders.

This could happen only in Poland. A woman left her baby at the confessional with a priest inside and quickly went out. The priest called the police. A policeman and policewoman arrived. The priest, fearing for the baby`s condition, decided to baptise him. He asked the police to be godparents. They agreed and the baby was called Piotr - Peter. The ceremony of giving Righteous among the Nations award in Poznań was disturbed by a few demonstrants who brought in the banner: "Stop the slaughter in Gaza." Upon seeing it, an Israeli citizen rushed from his chair and started punching them. The fight lasted for a few minutes. There won`t be any investigation because the parties haven`t lodged any complaints against each other. Protesters against Israel's operation in Gaza on Wednesday night disrupted a ceremony in Poznan, Poland, attended by the country's Israeli ambassador, David Peleg, to honor people who saved Jews during the Holocaust.
Police were called to the scene and made several arrests.
Peleg was scheduled to speak at a ceremony honoring a number of people considered "righteous among the nations," for their efforts to save Jews during the Holocaust.
The conflict began when protesters, apparently anarchists, stood up and waved banners reading "stop the slaughter," after which an Israeli-Polish radio broadcaster confronted them. An altercation among several of the attendees in the auditorium broke out and police made a number of arrests.
Peleg was not involved in the altercation and was unhurt. He told Haaretz, "I remained seated on the stage and waited for the commotion to end. At no point did I feel threatened." The police tracked her down, and probably asked if she wanted the baby back. She didn`t, so now he is going to be put to adoption. There was no crime because the baby was well cared for, in warm outfit, with a bottle of milk.

In my state and several other states there is a law that says a woman may abandon a baby at a Fire Station and one other safe place which I forget...maybe either a Police Station or a hospital...with no questions asked and no charges filed. This law was passed to try to prevent children being abandoned and dying before they are found. Otherwise, charges are filed against them for 'child endangerment' or worse, if the child should die.

Survey: Poland most US-friendly nation in Europe By DPA Jan 20, 2009
Warsaw - A majority of Poles view the United States favourably, and more favourably than any other European nation, Polish Radio reported on Tuesday.
Fifty-three per cent of Poles have a good opinion of the US, said an Ipsos agency poll of 22,000 people.
Out of the 22 nations surveyed, Poland ranked third - behind India and the US itself - in how well they think of the US.
Russia and Turkey ranked lowest, citing Washington's foreign policy for their negative view.
Bush – he forgot about Poland thenews.pl 20.01.2009
Press reports claim that outgoing US president George W. Bush failed to contact any Polish politicians while bidding farewell to various heads of state at the end of his term of office.
President Bush made phone calls to leaders of the major global powers, writes the Dziennik newspaper, including Russian PM Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President of France Nicolas Sarkozy.
The outgoing president also found time for a conversation with leaders of Denmark, Georgia or Greece. But he apparently had no time for Poland's politicians, claims Dziennik.
In Poland the US is viewed as an important ally. Poland was one of five countries who assisted the United States when it invaded Iraq to overthrow Saddam Hussein in 2003. By 2005, Warsaw has sent 2,500 troops to the war torn country.
Poland has also sent troops to Afghanistan as part of the US-led mission.
Bush's administration was involved in the long running negotiations with Poland to install the elements of the US anti-missile system on its soil.
In a presidential debate in 2004 with the then Democratic party contender John Kerry, - about the international nature of the coalition that invaded Iraq - Kerry said that the countries involved were only Great Britain, Australia and United States: "That's not a grand coalition, we can do better," he said. Bush replied: "Actually, he forgot about Poland."
It appears, this time, President Bush was the one who forgot about Poland.

This is really kind of sad. I was also a bit surprised by the divorce rate statistic. Divorce fair to take place in Warsaw Created: 22.01.2009 11:24 This weekend Poland’s capital is to host a ‘divorce fair’ aimed at helping couples untie the knot as painlessly as possible. Some 30 exhibitors, including private detectives, lawyers, sexologists and even companies conducting DNA tests, are to present their services at the fair. The idea of divorce fairs is new in Poland and it comes from Austria, where they are held under the banner of A new beginning. In Poland the first event of this kind was held in the western city of Wroclaw in September. The thematic scope of the fair is an answer to the current ‘market demand’, claim the advertising experts. And ‘market’ demand in Poland is growing pretty fast. According to data of the Central Statistical Office (GUS), every third marriage in Poland ends in divorce. In 2007 as many as 65,000 married couples split up, which is 20,000 more that ten years ago. (jm) thenews.pl

Yes, especially in Poland. The divorce rate has been growing, now it is 33. In Western Europe it is 85. Children born out of marriage are 20 in Poland and 80 in the West. I wonder if we ever reach those numbers. I am afraid we will, probably not in our lifetime, though.

A man is determined to defend his house which council planners destined for demolition to build a wider road. The man resists because hi won`t get a compensation for the house. How? In 195os communists deprived his family of the ownership, yet allowed them to stay in the house. Today the sole onwer of the house and land is the city, whose officials are not going to pay a dime. The man is desperate, he warned he has Molotov thingytail and other armament to defend his family property. A stubborn Pole. I think he is right. Today the democratic state shouldn`t respect communist decrees. In the film you can see a banner made by the man with such slogans: Nazis burnt us! Communists robbed us!
