It's very exciting that World Youth Day will be held in Krakow in 2016. It will be nice to see the press reports of the event and to see views of Krakow!I'm sure the older population in Krakow will be reminded of the visits of Pope St. John Paul several year ago and the joy of those visits!
Anyone out there planning on attending?

Anyone out there planning on attending? I am still young, I am thinking of atending. But..... Security queries raised over Kraków's World Youth Days 17.11.2015 12:28 The organizing committee of the World Youth Days in Kraków in July 2016 has said that it remains in close cooperation with all services responsible for ensuring security to the participants in the event at both national and international levels. The committee’s statement is in response to numerous queries addressed to the organizers of the World Youth Days in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris.
The statement says that on-site inspections have been carried out over the past few months of the main venues of the event by representatives of the Government Protection Bureau, the Internal Security Agency and the Defence Ministry.
The World Youth Days with Pope Francis is a religious event of a global character. Up to 2.5 million pilgrims are expected to attend the celebrations between the 26 and 31 of July. These include a night visit with the Pope and a holy mass celebrated by the pontiff.
Some 2,000 groups of pilgrims from 138 countries, a total of almost 450, 000 people, have already confirmed their participation.
In a related story, Bishop Henryk Tomasik of Radom has said in a radio interview that while in Poland for the World Youth Days, the Pope will also visit the Black Madonna shrine of Częstochowa. The Polish Episcopate, he said, is expecting an official communiqué from the Vatican on the matter. This problem of security in large crowds and the threat of terrorism was precisely why, after paying non-refundable deposits a year ahead for two of my daughters to attend World Youth Day in Toronto in 2002, I changed my mind, forfeited the deposits and kept them home. September 11, 2001 was very fresh in our minds at that time.
p.s. Beautiful sky in the photo! We had a sunset just like that just a day or two ago. It turned everything pink!

1 Your worries were justified and I am sure your daughters hold no grudge about it today. No, no grudges, especially since one of them had been to WYD in Rome in 2000! Yes, you do...I actually thought you had taken that one!

Are you going to be brave and stay in the city along with the visiting millions, or will you retreat to your farm to escape the crowds? I'm sure your students will be participating in WYD...it would be lovely if you could be there with them!

Due to shortage of accomodation places in Krakow, schools will be used to put up pilgrims. My school has also been chosen and I will probably spend this summer time in the old walls. Why not? Huge media interest in World Youth Days in Poland 01.03.2016 09:40 Almost 6,000 journalists from over 200 countries are expected to cover the World Youth Days with Pope Francis in the southern city of Kraków at the end of July.
March 1 sees the launch of a bilingual, Polish-English accreditation portal www.pope2016.com which is run jointly by the Polish Press Agency (PAP) and the Catholic Information Agency (KAI).
Addressing journalists in Kraków on Monday, Stanisław Cardinal Dziwisz said that interest in the event is unprecedented for Poland.
“This is surely going to be a great festival of faith,” the Cardinal reflected.
“We are looking forward to what the Pope is going to tell us and what young people from across the world will have to say; those who are motivated to shape their future in the light of religion, the knowledge of the Gospel and of the Church.”
In addition to a wide range of information about the Church and the World Youth Days, the www.pope2016.com website contains information about Poland, its political system, history, traditions, culture, tourist attractions and the economy.
The World Youth Days will be held between 26 and 31 of July. The event’s motto is “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy."- See more at: www.thenews.pl/1/9/Artykul/242746,Huge-media-interest-in-World-Youth-Days-in-Poland#sthash.MfVBwmJ2.dpuf

With your first-person excellent reporting, we will get the "real scoop" and get a behind-the-scenes view of what is really going on there! The professional media's reports will pale in comparison to yours, I'm sure! I'm so excited...I can't wait for July 26th!!

I mean, I will probably take care of pilgrims` welfare in my school instead of attending ceremonies. Or am I wrong? Nobody knows anything, they keep things secret in fear of terrorists or what?

Over 30,000 Americans expected in Poland for World Youth Days 28.03.2016 10:35 More than 30,000 Americans will travel to Poland for the Roman Catholic Church’s World Youth Days in July, an official has said. Pope Francis. Photo: Alfredo Borba/Wikimedia CommonsPope Francis. Photo: Alfredo Borba/Wikimedia Commons
That would be a record number of pilgrims from the United States for a meeting with the pope outside North America.
Paul Jarzembowski, who coordinates World Youth Days initiatives by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, told Polish Radio: “There will be a couple of groups that will be very small, maybe one or two people, and there will be groups of several hundred from different dioceses.
“Parishes are bringing in quite a number. Others are going with national movements.”
Some of the pilgrims from the United States have Polish roots. But for most the trip will be their first time in Poland.
World Youth Days takes place from 25 to 31 July, with millions of pilgrims expected to flock to Poland. Pope Francis is to attend the event.- See more at: www.thenews.pl/1/10/Artykul/246385,Over-30000-Americans-expected-in-Poland-for-World-Youth-Days#sthash.lJooeVXh.dpuf

The Festival is going to start tomorrow but people were arriving all day today. Krakow is besieged, both by security forces, volunteers and last but not least, pilgrims. Sirens are wailing, choppers are hovering over the city, streets are patroled by the police and the military police. I spent the day in my school where 300 pilgrims can be accomodated. They were trickling in small groups throughout the day since morning, left their things, looked around the premises and went out to visit the town. Krakow has been divided into zones, the red, purple and yellow are crucial. and many many more: www.dziennikpolski24.pl/aktualnosci/swiatowe-dni-mlodziezy-2016/g/sdm-2016-pielgrzymi-w-krakowie-nowe-zdjecia,10444576,19581448/

My school specialises in foreign languages, especially Spanish. We are looking after Spaniards and Mexicans and a few pilgrims from other Latin countries. But some clever guys in the city council thought that since Portugal is near Spain so Portuguese and Spanish languages are probably the same so we are also hosting a group from Brazil. Never mind, the more, the merrier. What fun! Do you speak either Spanish or Portuguese? I've been watching the crowds of pilgrims on the streets of Krakow on webcams: www.krakow.pl/multimedialny_krakow/1306,artykul,ulica_grodzka__z_pl__wszystkich_swietych_.html Wave to me if you make it downtown!

The centre of Krakow didn`t sleep last night. Some pilgrims complained their accomodation is too far from the centre and decided to spend the night in Planty Park around the Old Town. Fortunately, the weather is perfect. Cafes, bars and restaurants are sieged, are having golden harvest. People also dine on streets and pavements. Pilgrims must wear personal ids, which are checked by security or volunteer stewards. There is no prohibition, so pilgrims may drink beer and do. No criminal incidents have been reported. Picture made of selfies.

Wonderful, these images show how diverse, pluriform, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and beautiful the world church (Roman-Catholicism) is, a church of white Europeans (Slavs, Germanic people, Latin people, Hungarians, Baltic people), Black Africans and Asians. It always suprises me that the christian faith and churches are growing in Africa and Asia, and that secularisation, aging and thus empty churches and shrinking communities is hurting Roman-Catholicism and traditional Protestantism (Calvinism and Lutheranism) in Europe.
Pope Saint John Paul II (1920 – 2005) was not only a great Pope because he spoke out against Communism, anti-semitism and racism, but also because he inspired youth and attracted young people to the church and Roman-Catholic faith. He was the second longest-serving pope in modern history after Pope Pius IX, who served for nearly 32 years from 1846 to 1878.
He participated in many World Youth Day's all over the world.

Europe and the US are now seen as "mission fields" by the Roman Catholic Church. To help with our shortage of priests here in my archdiocese, we frequently have visiting priests from Africa helping out. Particularly during the summer, these holy African priests come to fill in for our American priests so that they can take their vacation time. We have one now at a Church I sometimes attend. We are grateful for their presence and help!
