Where are going on holidays?

I want to go to the seaside with two kids, just like last year. But the weather is a bit dull, so we are still waiting.

I have decided to visit Warsaw in the meantime. It will be again a memory trip, I went to Warsaw when I was about 8.

What do we want to see there? The zoo which is bigger than Krakow`s. The panorama of the city from the highest building. The Museum of Warsaw Uprising and the Museum of the Polish Armed Forces. Also the National Art Museum with Matejko`s paintings and the Natural History Museum. We will go sighseeing in the Old Town, see some monuments: Nike, The Little Insurgent, Mermaid, visit Łazienkowski Park with its squirels and peacocks.

Today I have bought a guide book on Warsaw.....

But you will probably have your camera with you when you are out and about, so we will be consoled by the fact that when you return to us you will have more fantastic photos...

Because through your photos I can see so many aspects of Poland - the people, the culture, the landscape, the architecture, the history - as well as the everyday elements of Polish life.

Of course we will be lonely and forlorn without our fearless leader! However, most of us will probably doing 'summer things' like vacation, trips, etc. so we will struggle through... ;D

Jeanne, it worries me that you can`t fully enjoy the pics because of your modem connection. After I learnt about it and read Ola`s comment, I started making my photos lighter before posting here, but they are still bulky when packed in one thread. E.g., I am going to post 200 more pics from the Communion. Altogether there will be about 300 in just one thread. Are you sure your connection will cope with it?

Please do not limit what you want to post because of my antiquated dial-up! It is my own fault that I am just so stinking stubborn...I currently pay only $15 a month for my internet access and just do not want to up that to $40, $60 or more...
My computer actually handles the pictures quite well...just very slowly. So please go ahead and post whatever you want so others may enjoy!! Except for this forum (and occasionally the old forum) I use the internet mostly just for email and some research, so the slow connection is not really an issue for me and it is more in keeping with my desired simple lifestyle to continue as I am.

i'm going to Arizona for vacation this year, in August none the less. should be nice and 110F. lol

definitely will check out the grand canyon for a few days, hike the highest mountain (Humphreys Peak), the crater, and probably will go for a few long drives through the monument valley and wherever the road takes me.

this will be my first visit to the Southwest so I am very excited.

Sounds like a great trip! Sedona is a beautiful town to visit if you get the chance.

i normally go north in the summer (upper great lakes or new england) and south in the winter but this opportunity came up and i need to take it while i can.

Other than some day trips to the seashore near my home, the only place I will be going is north to Vermont to visit my daughter on the farm! That will be in August when my summer work is completed...can't wait...I loVermont!

I forgot to add that I also want to take kids to: children`s entertainment center, The Grave of the Unknown Soldier: Geological Museum; Etnographic Museum; The Royal Castle and Wilanów Palace; if it rains, we will go to Aqua Park,

I am not sure about the parking under the bridge you mention – I have an impression it is mainly used by the buses. But the idea to park in this region - Mariensztat- is great if I look at the places you plan to visit. Another good possibility would be to turn into Ludna (see the map of toll parking zone) up from the Wisłostrada (the main street along the river). You can follow Ludna up to Ksiazeca and park somewhere in the region of Ludna and Rozbrat crossing. There's no special parking there but usually one can find a parking space there, still out of the pay-zone. Then you go by feet up Ksiązeca until Plac Trzech Krzyży which is some 300 m and you are in the heart of downtown. And very near to National Museum or Military Museum you plan to visit. Or you don't have to enter Plac Trzech Krzyzy, but some 100 meters down you can enter the Stock Exchange Building on your right hand side. They welcome everyone don't be mislead by the guards and electronic gates at the entrance! It is a great piece of modern architecture but more importantly they have huge elevator stairs inside my kids love – with all parts of machinery visible, so I think yours will like too! You can get out of the buidling on the other side (facing North) and enter the courtyard of the building of former communist party headquarters, now the financial center. It is fully open to visitors as well. Walking north you land at Aleje Jerozolimskie with some of the museums you wanted to visit on your right hand and very close.

Your plan is already very 'packed' but please consider Muzeum Techniki at the Palace of Culture ( the corner closest to Central Railroad station). The kids usually love it , and they have planetarium too. Also the gardens at the roof of BUW (Library of the university) are very liked by the kids -and that is very close to the region where you'd park - no matter if you choose Mariensztat or Ludna.

It worries me, though, that some, e.g, Polish Army Museum, don`t allow taking photos at all.

They should change the rules for you, and they certainly will if you show them your photographic archive online

But - if you take the pics without using flash, all should be ok, or is it about some copyright?

I really don't know much about the quality of schools in VT, but from what I've heard NH schools aren't that great... and funny you should mention ice cream...You would think that a state like VT with so many dairy farms would have great ice cream, but this is one thing that peeves my daughter about VT; there are no good ice cream stands with locally made ice cream. We are very used to having them here in Massachusetts and that is the one thing she misses since she moved to VT!

isn't B&J's made in VT anymore? but you are right on the small places. i am thinking outside of the big town there just aren't enough people to support creamery? i dunno.

Yes, Ben&Jerry's is still made in VT (though they have been sold out to a corp.- I forget who), but I was talking about the roadside retail places where they make their own ice cream (the best!) I really can't figure out why they do not exist...maybe you are right, that there isn't enough business outside the big towns...such a shame... what is life without ice cream?

Guys, we have been back home since Sunday as I had promised. However, during my absence my wife or our relative who used the computer or still sth else damaged Windows, so I can`t start it normally, only in rescue mode. I have been busy trying to figure out what happened and how to avoid the full reinstall.

But it seems I won`t avoid it. You must give me some more time.

We did a lot of sightseeing in Warsaw, visited 8 or 9 museums, saw major sites, and I took about 2500 photos and made a few films...

I am thinking about the way to present them... There are two possibilites: either show them in a chronological order like day 1, day 2, day 3, or create seperate posts for different subjects, e.g., Architecture, Monuments, Warsaw Rising etc.

What do you think?

Windows - I am no specialist, but did you try the option that uses the last settings when the system run ok. It is somewhere there.

Warsaw - whatever you prefer, both options seem interesting. I would opt for chronology as I am curious about your preferences.

After trying out all rescue operations, I had to reinstall the Windows. I don`t know if it was a virus or somebody deleted some system files. But it is working now.

I think chronology is a good choice, but I will also create seperate threads for the photos from each particular site, e.g., museums.

As for your desires to learn my preferences or typical Pole`s vacation schedule, please be careful. Firstly, I am not a typical Pole (when people hear we went to Warsaw, they are very surprised. When they learn we visited museums there, there are even more surprised).
Secondly, I went with two kids and had to take their preferecences into account too.

The processing of Warsaw photos is going to take some time, I hope I will complete it before Sunday when I want to go to the seaside. ;D

We are planning to leave tomorrow for the seaside, for a week at least. Today is going to be busy day again. I hate packing and preparing...
And one additional activity: checking radar sites on the way. Unfortunately, almost all of them are real. On the road to Warsaw half of photo radars was fake.
